What Might Be Happening When You Rub Perfume Vs. Spray It? An Answer by Dr. Ryan M. Spoering of Harvard University {Ask Marie-Helene}

louis_pasteur.jpeg

As a follow-up to the debate initiated by Gretchen of Beauty Hatchery on whether or not to rub perfume I thought it would be worthwhile to ask a chemist what he thought of the question. I more specifically wanted to ask what might be happening when one rubs perfume onto the skin vs. sprays it. Turning to a trusted source, I put the question to Dr. Ryan M. Spoering, a chemist at Harvard University. Here is what he had to say in response to my query....

Absolument Absinthe by Absolument {Perfume Review & Musings}

Absinthe4.jpg

Absolument Absinthe (Absolutely Absinthe) is the name chosen by its creators to visibly convey the sense of individual passion that motivated the creation of a perfume inspired by the mythological wormwood-based drink resurrected in France in the early 1990s. The name, like that of L'Artisan Fou D'Absinthe (crazy for absinthe), puts the stress on the atmosphere and mythology of excess that surrounded the consumption of the emerald-green liquor with high alcoholic contents - up to %75 - ultimately leading to its prohibition in France, Switzerland, and the US by 1915.

The popularity of the drink, which was due in part to the pleasurable ritual accompanying it, of slowly imbibing a piece of sugar over a glass partly covered with a slotted spoon leading to the "louching" of the absinthe which would then turn from deep green to cloudy green, also contributed to the demise of quality standards and the proliferation of toxic distillates. By the end of the 19th century, absinthe as a drink had come to symbolize bohemian Paris and anti-bourgeois culture, but also degeneration and death reaching in this manner a final stage in its transformation from a regenerative tonic and cordial to a drink symbolizing the flaws and destructive impulses of humanity....

Smell Like Home For The Holidays by Luckyscent {Shopping Tips} {Holiday Gift Ideas}

Luckyscent_Holiday.jpg

From the niche perfumery Luckyscent and in particular the lovely Michelyn Camen comes the idea of a selection of fragrances and candles that was especially put together for those of us who won't be able to share the joys of the holidays with our families. A fragrance can be like a presence and so these carefully chosen aromas will fill you with memories or prepare for new ones.

I don't know about you but after perusing their selection I couldn't help but think that these would be great choices to use in the period prior to the holidays in order to make these last longer than a couple of days and prepare us for the spirit of the season. I especially envision myself starting to burn holiday-themed candles in the period of the Advent...
