Rolling Out the Scented Red Carpet: Upcoming Celebrity Fragrances in 2008 {Fragrance News} {New Perfumes}

red carpet.jpg
If you thought the trend of celebrity fragrances would naturally wane, sputter, and die a slow and forecast death, well we have all heard about impermanence of course, but right now the trend is alive and well. And this is not going to change in 2008 as far as we can tell from the number of future releases and projects that are being announced. In this manner we learn that Claudia Schiffer is planning to release her own fragrance........

Gucci by Gucci (2007) {Perfume Short (Review)} {New Fragrance}

The Reception Frederick John Lewis, 1873.jpg
The Reception by Frederick John Lewis, 1873

Both modern chypres and rose perfumes are very au courant this season and the new Gucci Eau de Parfum harnesses these two trends in a subtle and elegant manner. Frida Giannini, the new artistic director at Gucci wanted to create a perfume meant for a strong and feminine woman. The idea of feminine strength is revealed here in a very restrained fashion creating an impression comparable to the effect that gliding water can have on the hardest of rocks overtime. Like that fluid force, Gucci Eau de Parfum is easy to wear and one wants to drink from it as easily as from a glass of water........

Scented Quote of the Day, from Serge Lutens: - {Fragrant Reading}

"A quoi sert le parfum ?

Nous sommes tous fragiles. Le parfum est une arme contre notre fragilité, notre timidité.
Il sert à s'exprimer, à se donner l'image la plus cohérente qu'on aimerait que les autres aient de soi. Séduire, c'est être soi-même et rencontrer les autres.
Sinon, cela peut être utile pour un comportement social. On porte un sac à initiales et un parfum qu'on reconnaît partout. Ainsi, on ne risque pas d'être aimé pour soi-même."

Translation & interview after the jump..........

A Tale of 3 Christina Aguilera Fragrances - Perfume Launch Mores {Celebrity Fragrances}

Christina Aguilera LR World.jpg

A recap first. When all the press was abuzz with the news of Aguilera's "first fragrance" to come out this fall, The Scented Salamander was able to spot a previous Christina Aguilera fragrance issued ca. 2004 called XPose. Then there was speculation as to whether that perfume had really existed at all since its existence had not been reported. A reader however commented recently that she knew that fragrance.

Thanks to You Tube too, you can discover the commercial for Xpose featuring Aguilera musing in front of her closet (a common theme in women's perfume commercials including in the one for the most recent Christina Aguilera fragrance) then spider-like catching a man or more than one in the net of her perfume. Please see in passing also a reference to Marilyn Monroe dabbing perfume,

Halloween - Perfumes from the Crypt....... {Perfume List}

Oriel Window William Heny Fox Talbot 1835 or 1839.aspx
 The Oriel Window, Lacock Abbey by William Henry Fox Talbot, 1835 or 1839

Halloween is upon us and with it the possible question of what perfume to wear to partake of the festivities or honor the dead. Halloween is not really celebrated in France. There was an attempt in the 1990s to implant the tradition there but it eventually failed although by 2000 it seemed to have picked up a bit. By 2006 however Le Monde and Le Parisien both declared Halloween to be dead.

One can still remember an encouraging picture in a daily showing a spectacular row of pumpkins at the esplanade du Trocadéro with the Eiffel Tower in the background. It seemed to be opening a Roman Appian way or inroad into French culture. But somehow the symbolism of the pumpkin never took hold nor the horror movie cultural references past a few fashionable force-fed years. One can see it as a fashion, like the Christmas trees garbed in artificial snow and dyed in red or blue a couple of years ago in Paris and it soon died as a new tradition. Perhaps what the French were lacking was a vibrant Irish community to keep the fire of Samain burning. Cultural resistance to a wholesale import of a cultural practice now perceived as very American is faulted too.

Halloween in the US on the contrary is a monster event for the majority. The olfactory images it conveys are rich or at least potentially rich.

But before we leave the shores of France, a country where a tradition of Halloween perfumes could have developed, we can evoke an immediate All Saints' Day association with the scents of Chrysantemum and Immortelle flowers that are laid out on tombs on the day of La Toussaint . We know one perfume that can suggest this tradition and it would work well in the US too with its dark maple syrupy tones, Sables by Annick Goutal........

McGregor said at a press conference about his love of adventure and motorbiking that, "There's something that appeals to the little boy in us to go out and not wash for weeks," [...]"You have no responsibilities except to have petrol in the tank and a vague idea of where you're going."(quote via Women's Wear Daily)

Scented Gloves from 150 € or US $ 216

Maître Parfumeur et Gantier founded by Jean Laporte in 1988 and now headed by Jean-Paul Millet Lage is reintroducing the ancient practice of scenting gloves that gave its name to the corporation of master glovers and perfumers in France starting in 1190 under Philippe-Auguste, and which finally saw its official status consolidated in 1656........
