New L.A.dy Dior Movie with Marion Cotillard Takes Inspiration from Richard Avedon Directing Lauren Hutton {Fashion Notes}

Marion_Cotillard_channels_Hollywood_glamour_for_Lady_Dior.jpgJohn Cameron Mitchell directed a rather long short commercial movie featuring actress Marion Cotillard which offers an humoristic angle on the brand image of the Lady Dior bags.

Far from the esoteric ambiance of the Shanghai short with the same actress and the same bags, this film wants to entertain and surprise you with the revelation that luxury can be funny too.

The theme is directly inspired by a commercial Richard Avedon shot with Lauren Hutton, as Mitchell reveals. In both films, the fashion world is presented as an intense freak show, until some more natural emotions come into play when the star explodes showing anger and an understandable desire for liberation, NOW!

This seems to be the whole paradox of fashion: artificiality in constant search of authenticity, spontaneity, and fresh ideas...

Stella-McCartney-It-Print-Collection.jpgStella by Stella McCartney is available from this summer 2011 in a limited-edition trio called The Print Collection. The look was inspired by the Spring-Summer 2011 fashion collection of the designer which saw magnifying use of antique botanical prints rendered in vivid, rich colors. So, What's Your Bet on the Color of the Queen's Hat? {Fashion Notes}

Bookmaker_Royal_Wedding_A.jpg

Hats are all-important in British culture (and in my book too) and the Queen's hats have always been a prime focus of debate on taste, the destinies of look and the stability of the monarchy in the UK.

On the eve of the Very Big Day of Catherine Middleton and Prince William, all bets are taken on what the color of the hat of Elizabeth II will be. We remember her wearing a turquoise hat (and matching dress of course) for the marriage of her second son, Andrew, with Sarah Ferguson. What will its color be this time or what should it be, do you think? The people is waiting with bated breath and meanwhile have decided to wear Union-Jack bowlers to proclaim their national pride.

Funnier still, bets are also taken on who will cry first at the wedding ceremony and what year the first-born of the couple will be expected...

Chanel Team Up with Colette for Giant Pop-Up Store, March 1st-10th 2011 {Fashion Notes}

Chanel_Colette_pop_up_store.jpg

Fashion likes to mix styles, they say. Chanel together with Parisian concept store Colette are illustrating this adage from March 1st to March 10th 2011 with the temporary set-up of a creative space of expression within the walls of a giant "ephemeral boutique" located 336-340, rue Saint Honoré, near Colette's mothership. The "two legendary Fashion addresses" will fuse for a time on the backdrop of the industrial aesthetics of a former garage while reportedly cultivating a "rock 'n roll vibe." The happening will take place around "fashion, visual arts and musical performances"...

Dior To Let Go of John Galliano: When Provocation Goes Way Too Far {Fashion Notes}

Galliano_Fall_Winter_2011_A.jpg

Dior hired John Galliano in 1996 for a reason, because they wanted to rejuvenate their image with a huge dose of eccentricity and provocation. On March 1st, 2011, they decided it just went too far and did a disservice to their image. Le Figaro reports that a procedure for his dismissal has been started.

After an amateur cellphone video surfaced featuring Galliano launching into a a racist rant which seems to be encouraged by the anonymous filmmaker and party trying to push a drunkard who happens to be famous to trip even further in front of a camera, Dior obviously had little choice left...

John Galliano Suspended by Dior for Café Altercation: What He Said, What The Couple Said {Fashion Notes}

Galliano_Portrait_A.jpg

The media reported yesterday that designer John Galliano had been suspended by Dior at a crucial time for the collections for allegedly verbally abusing a couple sitting at the terrace of the Café La Perle in the Marais district of Paris on Thursday night. It has been established since then that Galliano was under the influence. Two sources report two somewhat contradictory statements about what took place.

See after the jump a recap: what Galliano reportedly said; what the couple reportedly said, heard and did as they were interviewed by a French radio, Europe 1; the latest updates...
