Axe Anarchy for Men & Women (2012): The Body Spray is Coming of Age {New Fragrances}

axe-anarchy-for-him-and-for-her-creative-lg.jpgAxe is now de facto tapping into the more aspirational and prestige market by turning their attention to women's tastes with a new duo of scents called Axe Anarchy for men and women. Feminine fragrances are usually priced at a higher point, are more concentrated and generally motivate more research.

Until now, Axe had been targeting the stereotypical young male who wears fragrance only because he views it as a means to attract women, not for the love of perfume...

Aurélien Guichard on Perfume: The Necessary Touch of Imperfection to Create Fragrances of Character {Perfume Images & Ads}

aurelien_guichard.jpg

French TV program "Bienvenue dans la Ruche!" (Welcome in the Beehive/Workshop) interviews perfumer Aurélien Guichard on the profession of perfumer and the art of creating perfume.

You are invited to detect the interesting touch of imperfection in his fragrances and perfume generally speaking as he insists that imperfection is necessary in order to preserve the personality of a scent. Fragrances of character, you are even tempted to say "character fragrances" by analogy with the expression "character actors" do not need the airbrushing to make you dream, they need on the contrary to make you pause, wonder and maybe crinkle your nose at first...

IFRANA Releases Educational Video on Why Listing Perfume Ingredients is Not a Good Idea {Perfume Images & Ads}

IFRA_Making_Scents.jpgIFRA North America released a video to explain why fragrance ingredients are not listed on perfume bottles and packages.

The reason why they are taking the time to do that is because they have been criticized for outlawing perfume ingredients outright - see our IFRA Interview - instead of using a commonsensical preventative, informational system which would allow consumers to choose a product that suit them or not. A list of perfume ingredients would enable consumers to know what they are going to apply onto their skins or inhale, just like it is routinely done in the food industry where, for instance, trace amounts of peanuts are mentioned instead of peanuts or nuts being forcibly reduced or banned from the market in blanket measures although peanuts allergies are well-documented and are known to be life-threatening in some cases...

Emily Blunt Finally Revealed in New Opium Advert {Perfume Images & Ads}

Emily_Blunt_Yves_Saint_Laurent_Opium_Campaign.jpgThe new advertising campaign for Opium, starring actress Emily Blunt, has finally been unveiled. Away from the tense, naked, reclining pose of model Sophie Dahl posing for Tom Ford at YSL and photographer Steven Meisel, lens man Patrick Demarchelier has opted for a more refined and natural atmosphere. Wearing YSL's iconic smoking for women, Blunt could have been captured in her living room after the end of a soirée. She is relaxed and in need of a tête-à-tête with her perfume - who wouldn't understand that? - as it brings her so much...

Oh, Lola! Perfume Ad Goes Too Far Says the ASA {Fragrance News} {Perfume Images & Adverts}

oh_lola_ad.jpgThe British Advertising Standards Authority have struck down the Oh, Lola! by Marc Jacobs fragrance ad (see after the jump) as willy-nilly promoting the sexualisation of children by being too sexually explicit and not socially responsible. It portrays a pre-nubile-looking Dakota Fanning holding a bottle of perfume in a manner as to play upon sexual innuendoes. Coty who produces the fragrance said they admitted being "edgy" but nothing more. Fanning who is 16 going on 17 can look younger, and was made to look like a modern-day Lolita by Marc Jacobs in the advert...

J'Adore by Dior during the Golden Hour in Rue de Passy {Perfume Images & Ads}

Dior_Jadore_Passy_2011_OK.jpgThere was a golden light highlighting the surface of a wall covered with the advert for the 2011 campaign for Dior J'Adore on rue de Passy in Paris.

Dior Parfums seem to practically own that advertising space as it is always and successively covered with a ballet of their fragrance adverts...

A Lovely Femme-Oriented Interview with Sophia Grojsman {Perfume Images & Ads} {Fragrant Reading}

judith_muller_bathsheba.jpgA young Judith Muller posing with Bathsheba Via hetek.hu

Luminary perfumer Sophia Grojsman was interviewed by Forward. She reveals, among other things, that Judith Muller Bathsheba was her first marketed perfume while Trésor by Lancôme might very well be her favorite creation. To the nose, the place of one of her perfumes in the history of women seems to constitute a tipping point for deciding which might be her favorite. For Grojsman, ultimately, perfume is about elevating femininity and making women feel well in their skins, helping them overcome the trivialities of daily life. It is medicine for the (feminine) soul. If this is not exactly feminism, it is nevertheless all very much and resolutely on the side of women.

After listening to the interview, you just wished someone could bottle the charm of her Bielorussian accent with its genrous "r's" as well as the raspiness of her smoky voice in a bottle....

Latest Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Commercial Really Does Look Like a Behind-The-Scenes {Perfume Images & Ads}

light_blue_ad.jpgSeriously, what is this waxed triangle doing in a close-up shot? Instead of looking like the glamorous fragrance commercial it's supposed to be, it makes you feel David Gandy's pain to have had his hair removed by a short-sighted beautician.

Someone, please tell me if this is supposed to be a body-hair-fetish thing and the latest in perfume-ad erotica? Otherwise, it looks like a curiously sloppy shot.

As always with D & G (and Tom Ford) it's all about the crotch. And come to think of it, for Marc Jacobs too...

A Still from L'Amour Fou: How Yves Saint Laurent Saw Opium Originally {Perfume Images & Ads}

LAmour-Fou-Movie-Poster-Yves-Saint-Laurent-Pierre-Berge.jpgPerfume lovers should check out the documentary film by Pierre Thoretton about the 50-year relationship between fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and businessman Pierre Bergé called L'Amour Fou for some of the insights it gives into YSL's aesthetic influences, but also his solitude.

There is a segment in the middle of the film about the launch of Opium. The name, as it turns out, was terribly non-PC and a group of Chinese activists let people know that to them it was like naming a fragrance "Holocaust" as it evoked the mass exterminations in China due to the opium wars...

Spoof Fragrance Commercial with Keith Urban & Ellen DeGeneres {Perfume Images & Ads}

Phoenix_spoof.jpgPresumably to give some ideas to the contestants for the Keith Urban Phoenix perfume commercial, the singer together with show host Ellen DeGeneres offered a demonstration of what can de done with a basic idea: a perfume that drives women wild. Judging from the thread we got on the giveaway for the 6 bottles of the Phoenix cologne, they're spot on as far as the power of olfactive attraction of Urban is concerned.You can watch the fake commercial plus the outtakes after the jump...

Short Film by Christian Weber for Debut Bottega Veneta Perfume {Fragrance Images & Ads}

Murano_bottega_veneta.jpgChristian Weber directed a short film, his second one for the brand after Viaggio Notturno, about the new and debut Bottega Veneta perfume. In the first film, the photographer and director already included olfactory/visual clues, i.e., volutes of incense and bouquets of lilies. The fragrance version which is shown at the end of the short is the luxurious parfum concentration housed in a Murano flacon (395€ for 65 ml).

The non-narrative film aims to invite viewers to sensorily experience the scent through the suggestive medium of images...
