Iris Apfel is your dream of an eccentric, flamboyant grand-mother come true. From the top of her 90 years of existence, she dispenses style-cum-wisdom lessons without even trying because what she displays is the result of decades of practice and instinct-in-action. After an exhibition at the MET honored her and a book about it came out in 2005, Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel by Eric Boman, with an introduction by Harold Koda and a contribution by Apfel herself, her style and eye-glasses in particular have been acquiring iconic status...

Chanel have become masters of nail-polish anticipation as another fashion coup is in store: Les Jeans de Chanel. Inspired by the iconic blue denim (originally called Bleu de Nîmes in honor of its French birthplace), the trio of nail polishes includes Blue Rebel, Coco Blue and Blue Boy.
They are subtle, sophisticated blues which are only going to pretend that they can be as casual as everyday jeanswear. Because it is Chanel, it won't be easy to laquer your nails with them unless you get early enough on the official wait list....

Actress Angelina Jolie was apparently roped into posing for the latest Core Values Louis Vuitton ad. One cannot but notice that the advertising campaign is an odd mixture of styles. First of all, it reminds you vaguely of Jane Fonda in Vietnam in the 70s sporting pseudo fatigues. As in a reminder of that political era, Jolie is wearing an outfit that looks like a cross between a peasant working clothes and kaki military fatigues. Her own Alto carryall bag creates a marked contrast with the worm-eaten boat, to the point where it makes you feel a bit uneasy about the discrepancy and the message it conveys of laugh-in-your-face luxury...

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge was the subject of several reports in the British press in the past few days, stressing her ability to blend in with the shopping crowds in London just a few hours away only from the Trooping of the Colours ceremony marking the Queen's birthday (albeit in a delayed fashion.) Known for her predilection for high-street brands, Kate Windsor did not disappoint once more as she was spotted shopping for a face cream at Boots...

Bare Minerals are launching a new collection of lip colors entitled Pretty Amazing Lip Color. The spirit of the collection is to aim to avoid the pain of having to choose between the staying power of a lipstick and the high shine of a lip gloss by offering the best of both worlds in one (economical) tube. What the brand promises also are that the pigments are highly saturated while the shine factor was designed to be long-lasting...

As summer is approaching, as well as beach and swimming times, and travel times, it's the high season to consider using dry shampoo. I had not kept the best of memories of my early attempts in that area. But let's say it was probably prehistoric time in terms of dry shampoo (I'm not a fan a priori of the concept.) Spying a small pink canister of British brand Batiste Dry Shampoo Blush, I decided to give it a go because the packaging looked hip in a vintage way and the shampoo smelled good in the Blush scent, a tropical white floral meant to help you escape to Hawaï or some such place...

Jennifer Lopez has become the first global brand ambassador for Gillette Venus razors.
Part of her action is to promote the brand, the other part is to promote the cause of women focusing on finding means to empower them. You can do two things right now (after watching the commercial featuring JLo singing for Gillette Venus after the jump.) The first one is to upload your Goddess story on the dedicated page (250 character limit.) For each story contributed, $1 will be donated to charity. For instance, Jennifer Lopez contributed her own story about her "goddess moments." She writes, "For me personally, it has to do with a lot of different things. My Goddess shows when I’m with my family. Seeing my children smile. Looking into their eyes. Spending every spare second with them. I feel really, really powerful because of the love we share. [...]
All of those times when I am connected to who I really am—comfortable with myself and confident in who I am. That’s when my Goddess is showing."...

The Cosmetic Valley located near Paris in France is known as the world's foremost center of development and tink-tankering about beauty. Authors Jean-Luc Ansel and Marguerite Renault wrote a new book published in December 2010 in French entitled Les Sens de la Beauté: La Cosmetic Valley ou l'excellence à la française (Beauty Senses: The Cosmetic Valley or Excellence, the French Way.) In it they take a closer look at this nevralgic spot of the beauty industry but also approach the phenomenon of human beauty through all the five senses...

Avon is preparing to launch a new skincare line targeting women 60 and over called Anew Platinum with the tag line "If you think your youth is gone, think again!". If you are like me, you have had a tendency to always check out creams destined to more advanced age groups, just to see if you could keep your collagen supply optimally boosted. This way, I am hoping to see one day the first marketed cream for 100 years old and over! (not so futuristic, we think.) But what struck me even more than the good news of a 65-year-old-soon-to-be-66 Jacqueline-Bisset fronted ad campaign are the words of wisdom she delivered in an era when invasive techniques of youth-ification (it's not listed in the dictionary yet and maybe it never should) have become so common that only few people it seems are doing a double-take before heading to the Botox chair. I culled out two pictures from 2009 and 2010 to see if we could see any differences overtime, and it seems to me (what do you think?) that her skin tone, texture, luminosity, suppleness and firmness have improved between November 2009 and June 2010 (she says the cream does good things for her). Can you guess which of the 2 images is from which period?...

Bariéderm by Uriage (US$24,95) is by a French skincare brand typically sold in France in what are called "parapharmacies" which look like pharmacies but are really beauty product stores with a health-conscious slant. They usually sell brands which look clean and clinical with a minimum of fuss over their packaging. They also sell dietary supplements, health books, fresh, toiletry-oriented perfumes and lately have started to carry more and more organic and natural products to keep up with the demand from the public. The sales assistants welcome you wearing clinical outfits reminding you of the medical, pharmacological mystique which Helena Rubinstein famously exploited to sell her beauty creams. Uriage is named, like many other such parapharmacie brands, after the name of a thermal station and source of water which contributes its unique mineral and oligo-element properties to the products, like say, La Roche-Posay, Evian etc...

As I was fiddling around in my stashes of beauty products looking for a lighter cream or lotion to help me transition from colder to warmer weather, I happened on this little number, Olay Definity Self Repair Serum, which I had picked up during a previous drugstore run and never used it. I decided to give it a go. My main concern here was to find a moisturizer that would be light enough to use with sunscreen on top without it all becoming a stifling barrier for the skin. After a week or so later of (interrupted) use, I had to notice not only the immediate effects but the medium-term ones, and they were good...
