Yankee Candle Midsummer's Night...for Men {Shopping Tip of the Day}

Yankee-Candle-Midsummer-Night.jpgYankee Candle have released a series of new scents for their 2010 fall collection of candles (I'll have to check the new Mountain Lodge, I'm afraid). But before we get ahead of ourselves, I thought it would be good to call attention to the appropriate scent for the moment, Midsummer's Night.

According to the brand, the middle of summer smells of musk, patchouli, sage and mahogany cologne.

What I thought is a bit intriguing is that it's apparently marketed as a home candle designed for masculine tastes. Midsummer Night... only for men? Yes, indeed...

Travalo Makes it Easy to Carry Perfume in your Luggage, & More {Shopping Tip of the Day}

Travalo-B.jpgThere has been quite the buzz about a new spray system trademarked by Travalo, a brand of travel perfume atomizers which makes it easy not only to carry fragrance in your purse, travel bag or suitcase but also, and that's newer, a cinch by the looks of it, to decant scent from bottle to purse spray.

The label also likes to stress that it will allow you to preserve the anonymity of the fragrance you are wearing and even encourages you to use their system to customize your own blend...

Shopping Tip of the Day: Visiting Paris Any Time Soon? It's Shopping Season!

soldes-sales-paris-B.jpg

This is a reminder that the official 2010 Summer Sales (Soldes d'été) will start in Paris on Wednesday June 30th 2010 and will last for 5 weeks until August 3rd, 2010. In other regions of France, they may start at later dates.

I've already spotted pre-announcements of offers of up to 80% discount (just make sure you know the regular prices beforehand to see if the big discounts are as generous as advertised and don't forget to do comparison shopping whenever possible.)

Attention Paris Shoppers, The Annual Sales Have Started (Jan 6 - Feb 9, 2010) {Perfume Shopping Tips}

winter-sales-air-mail.jpg
Today January 6 is Day 1 of the Annual Winter Sales called Soldes d'Hiver in France. It is also the day of the Epiphany (I mention this because of the tasty and flavorful traditionally almond-filled galettes des rois pastries). They will last until February 9. It is only during this official bracketed time that retailers are allowed to lose money on sales and to try to sell off old stocks.The early media reports have been predicting record discount percentages from the beginning. While it is more usual to see prices drop steadily as the period of 5 weeks unwind, this time from what I have been able to see, prices are indeed deeply cut from day 1 at 50% off or 70% off for perfumes.

It remains to be seen what stocks will appear later on as from what I have been able to observe, only part of the products were put on display and in some stores there were rather relaxed about bringing out the discounted goods but were willing to check in the back of their boutiques...

Men's Fragrance Trends Fall/Winter 2009/2010 - Part 2: Icy {Trend Alert} Holidays Gift Guide {Shopping Tips}

antarctica-7-Sebastian-Copeland.jpgAntarctica 7 by Sebastian Copeland

Please see Part 1: Fiery colognes for the first installment

While one notices this season a discreet tectonic shift in the direction of men's fragrances getting more uninhibited and sensual, at the other end of the spectrum this Fall/Winter 2009/2010 you can find extremely fresh to Icy colognes.

Key words for this trend are: "Icy", "Snowy", "Chilly", "Cool", "Extreme Freshness", "Cologne" (in the French sense), "white", "fizzy", "electric"

cartier-edt-cologne.jpgCartier Déclaration Eau de Toilette Cologne

The new Cartier Déclaration Cologne, in fact an Eau de Toilette, borrows its inspiration from the grand tradition of Eau de Cologne. It is a markedly dry and oh-so-fresh-herbal-y twist on the original Déclaration. The brand alludes to "a singular freshness." Freshness does not need be transparent and devoid of character (the dry facet) and this scent proves it. An appealing slightly wild charm...

Men's Fragrance Trends Fall/Winter 2009 Part 1: Fiery {Trend Alert} Holidays Gift Guide {Shopping Tips}

axel-Hutte-capulin-fire.jpgAxel Hütte, Capulin Fire - 1, Dip., New Mexico

Fiery & Icy Colognes

This fall/winter 2009 season men are offered very contrasted choices for their personal fragrances. While at the end of the summer it looked like unusually deep textures were going to prevail in men's scents heralding a gentle shift in mainstream masculine olfactory codes, it has now become clear that gentlemen have two extremes to choose from: Fire and Extreme Freshness.

Fragrance designers are envisioning men as sensation and thrill seekers and advertising perfume by offering sensory adventure bottled to them. All men might not travel to Africa or Antarctica but their fragrances can satisfy a deep need to do so.

The 2009 Fall/Winter Fiery Fragrances for Men - Part 1

There is a general push towards more intensity and this is not just because it is the cold season, like every year. The new men's colognes of fall/winter 2009 are exceptionally rich and more explicitly alluring. They make sure however to evoke a sense of strength and intensity while borrowing traditional tools of seduction from the culture and language of women's perfumes.

Men are invited to be in touch with their feminine sides and why not, try stealing the show from women instead of counting on them to be the birds with garish feathers perfume-wise.

This trend even dares for the first time in the mainstream to stick the label "Parfum" on a masculine cologne bottle to entice men out of their comfort zone both olfactorily and pyschologically.

Parfum or extrait is the highest concentration for a scent and is usually culturally constructed as an exclusive treat for women reserved for their pulse points.

Fiery key words this fall/winter 2009 in the masculine perfume alleys are "parfum", "elixir", "intense", "absolute" and "liqueur"...

16 Baby Approved Perfumes {Fragrance List} {Shopping Tips}

baby-girl-perfume-B.jpg

We are so used to representing to our selves the scents of babies as eminently desirable that the reaction to the idea of perfuming your little bundles of love can be one of incredulity or sarcasm. I remember years ago reading a shopping guide to baby products and encountering the reaction of the author in a brief passage dedicated to baby perfumes. He or she had two main points to make 1) this was an European idea, hence understandably somewhat strange; 2) use perfume only if you think your baby stinks, which was phrased in such a way as to let you feel  that you would be a monster to think that babies ever smell. Culturally, we are trained to focus on the cuddly smells of babies and forget about the rest, which nevertheless exists aplenty. Saying something like my baby smells is not easy because it carries a measure of moral assessment with it.

I would like to say however that perfuming is not just about deodorizing and therefore the point is moot for me. Perfuming is a gesture of refinement. It adds beauty to the world and will no doubt create a bond with your children, a reservoir of memories into which to tap in the future.

Here is a list of Baby Approved Perfumes if you want to explore this option. Many women also like to use baby fragrances as they are alcohol-free and discreetly scented. In the summer, they are a good solution for the beach. Don't forget too that they make great baby-shower gifts! And why not offer perfume to a baby or a new mom for the Holidays?
