The New Perry Ellis for Men •• More Info {Fragrance News} {Shopping Tip}

Perry-Ellis-Advert.jpg

The new Perry Ellis for Men is generating quite a buzz,what with the handsome bottle, the glam Italianate advertising and the teasing scent strips in the glossies from the end of spring 2008.

After TSS posted earlier on about the upcoming cologne, there was a palpable surge of interest for the fragrance both from people on the blog and via email. Readers asked questions about its whereabouts as it has been tricky to track down the fragrance in stores and online. The local Boston Macy's men's perfume counter rep unexpectedly stated that they did not carry Perry Ellis fragrances. Perry Ellis had the following to say,....

The Musée International de la Parfumerie Will Reopen This Fall {Fragrance News} {Perfume Advert}

Papier-darmenie-ad-1890s.jpg

After announcing last year that the Musée International de la Parfumerie (International Museum of Perfumery), located in the south of France in the historical center of perfumery that Grasse is, would reopen in early 2008, the inauguration was delayed but is now scheduled for October 18, 2008, according to Fashion Mag.fr

On your right, an ad for the famous Papier d'Arménie from the 1890s, which is part of the Museum's collection, showing its purifying properties: it roots out evil angels and other miasma of that same order. The tag line is "Parfume, Assainit" (Perfumes, Cleanses)

(For a contemporary take on Papier d'Arménie, see Francis Kurkdjian's version.)

Chanel Says Emma Is Not The One & Angelina Jolie To Team Up with Coty {Fragrance News}

Angelina-Jolie-Brad-Pitt-Cannes-2008.jpg

According to Cosmetics International, Emma Watson is not meant to be in the future of Chanel to replace Keira Knightley as the spokesmodel for Coco Chanel, as the rumor had been spreading lately. Chanel is officially denying the "gossip".

One celebrity out, another celebrity in. Angelina Jolie on the other hand is reported to be in talks with Coty to become their next celebrity to develop a perfume. You have to love the way CI puts it,

"Jolie, who models Shiseido cosmetics in Asia, would arguably be the biggest star yet to work with Coty, outshining even Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker."

It feels like watching stocks go up on Wall Street.

Is This A Preview of the New Serge Lutens Scent? {Fragrance News}

An article in the Herald.ie seems to allude to the upcoming new perfume by Serge Lutens. Serge Lutens creates three fragrances a year, two exports and 1 non-export, the latter being exclusive to the Salons Shiseido at the Palais Royal. In 2007, there were Rousse, Louve, and Sarrasins. If the schedule is the same, it should be a reference to a non-export scent. Please note how the journalist is at pains not to name the perfume throughout the article.

"A very sexy Serge Lutens perfume came into my office the other day. It was a gorgeous scent, all spicy and incredibly complex. It seemed to change every time I took a sniff of the bottle and everyone smelt something different in it."

Cartier Déclaration Fêtes Its 10th Anniversary with Special Edition {Fragrance News}

Cartier-Declaration-leather.jpg

Déclaration, composed by perfumer Jean Claude Ellena, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a luxurious new casing made out of leather sewn with white stitches. It makes sense for perfume brands to celebrate such anniversaries because a perfume that lasts is bound to have some qualities and it also functions as publicity for collectors and new wearers.

Déclaration is one of Cartier's best-sellers and can easily be worn by women as well thanks to its unisex leaning. It is fresh, spicy, yet also warm.

Ellena was inspired by the idea of translating Russian tea into a fragrance although to our nose, it smells more like Indian or Kashmiri cardamom chai......

Yves Saint Laurent Bids Us Adieu: The Man Who Would Wrap Us In Love {Fragrance News}

YSL-AD-Theatre.jpg

Fashion couturier Yves Saint Laurent died at the age of 71 at his house in Paris on Sunday. He had been ill for many years and his health deteriorated in the last week. He was born in Oran, Algeria in 1936, in a family of pied-noir French settlers there. He would become an assistant to Christian Dior, later offering his own YSL fashion brand in 1962 with the help of Pierre Bergé before founding his own first ready-to-wear boutique called Rive Gauche in 1966.

Just like he was a major influence on 20th century fashion and images of feminine beauty, he also left his mark on the universe of luxury perfumes. If he was not a perfumer himself, he was an exacting and demanding designer of fragrances, seeing to the smallest details for the creation of the Opium flacon or encouraging the breaking of puritanical codes in perfume advertising with Pour un Homme for which he himself posed naked in 1971 or M7 which featured a frontal view of a male nude model, Aïkido champion Samuel de Cubber.....

Thierry Wasser Named New Guerlain In-House Perfumer {Fragrance News}

Guerlain-House2.jpg

In an interesting twist of events, Guerlain have announced that they have hired perfumer Thierry Wasser to be the exclusive in-house nose starting in June for the venerable institution which was established in 1828. This move is part of a trend of recapturing the identity and standing of a traditional perfume house by employing a nose who is more or less absolutely exclusive to it and whose creations in principle bear a common signature thereby reinforcing the image of the brand. Guerlain being owned by luxury group  LVMH, an in-house nose is also probably felt to add to the representation of exclusivity conveyed by the brand name, like for example Demachy for Dior also owned by LVMH. It can be a very positive development from the point of view of perfume creation in the sense that it can encourage a perfumer to take more risks instead of having to compete immediately with other perfumers for a brief.

Thierry-Wasser-Guerlain.jpg

Guerlain since its founding has had members of five generations of the Guerlain family at its helm until its incorporation into the LVMH group in 1994. Jean-Paul Guerlain is the last nose from the Guerlain dynasty to preside over the destinies of the brand. Officially retired, he continues to officiate (see his latest Figue-Iris) and according to Cosmetics News will guide Wasser's steps as he moves into his new role while Sylvaine Delacourte will collaborate closely with him as artistic director......

Entitled Les Quatre Saisons, it includes three perfumes from the house catalog as well as a new creation dedicated to celebrating the passage from summer to fall.

The four seasons quartet as seen by Guerlain are: Muguet de Printemps, a lily-of-the-valley soliflore that is traditionally released yearly on the first of May, Quant Vient L'Eté (When Summer Comes), a luminous composition inspired by fields of yellow rape in the summer, Brume d'Automne (Fall Mist), the newest creation, and Winter Délice, once part of the Aqua Allegoria line and which centers on wintry impressions during the Holidays..........

Naomi Watts is New Thierry Mugler Angel Icon {Fragrance News - News Flash} {Celebrity Fragrance}

NaomiWatts_ThierryMugler.JPG

Actress Naomi Watts in Los Angeles on May 5th 2008

Hot off the wire. In a move to link perfume and Hollywood glamor, it has been announced today that actress Naomi Watts will be the new icon for the fragrance Angel by Thierry Mugler starting this fall. As underlined by the press release, previous advertising campaigns for the first oriental gourmand that is Angel were graced in the past by beautiful feminine models but this time, "the new incarnation is more star than ever." Advertising campaign will break in national publications from October 2008.

This is an interesting choice and goes well with the image of the perfume, we think, especially if you recall Mulholland Drive. Angel despite its international success still manages to keep a little bit of a strange flavor, a quirkiness in the midst of success and Naomi Watts offers this quality......
