Fragrance News: Collector Paris by Yves Saint Laurent (Updated)

Paris Collector.jpg YSL is also releasing a limited Fireworks Collector Edition of Paris all dressed up in luxurious black and gold. It will retail for 49.60 Euros and will be available in travel retail from September 1 2006. This flacon will grace any vanity table, I think. This jus is, by the way, one of the best rose scents on the market. It smells like spring and summer in Paris even if you wear it in the autumn and winter.

Update: It is now available at Nordstrom for $67.50.

It is accompanied this time by an Opium Collector Powder for Eyes & Complexion. The shades are, "...imperial purple, pearly white, jade green and golden beige. These have been assembled to form the petals and leaves of a lotus flower. They can be used alone or together, on the eyes or face." It is the first time that YSL issues a compact powder together with a perfume.

The scent is called Fleur de Narcisse.  Just like a "grand cru" or exceptional wine, these rare vintage perfumes are based on a single harvest of flowers of exceptional quality, in this case narcissus poeticus from Languedoc-Roussillon...

Fragrance News & Fragrant Reading: Billet Doux by Fragonard

billetdoux.jpg

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, the French perfume house Fragonard is re-editing Billet Doux, a fragrance first introduced in the 1950s. The fragrance house originally from Grasse in the south of France also opened a new boutique in Paris, rue du Faubourd-Saint-Honoré in mid-July; it plans to open another store at the Carroussel du Louvre in December 2006. A book retracing the history of Fragonard is also being published to commemorate their anniversary.

You can read more about the history of the Fragonard house in the following article from Les Echos of 9 August 2006:

Dear Readers....

femmedelettres_puzzle2.gif

Dear Readers,

It has come to my realization that as my publisher is awaiting for my book manuscript to be sent to him in the next few weeks, I will need to post less regularly or do easier pieces. You may have noticed that I was less present these past few days and so I thought it would be better to give you the heads up on this change of rythm and explain why I have to do this. I have decided to continue posting but less frequently so or more simply so in the next month. I will try to make this work by changing the formats of my posts which will be shorter and more synthetic, conceived of more like notes, maybe not a bad thing after all. I will also get my inspiration from Victoria's Own and post about what perfume I am wearing at the moment of writing the post.

Thank you all for your wonderful contributions and see you more at length in September,

Yours,

Mimi Froufrou

This is the picture of one of my ancestors, a 19th century woman writer. Do you recognize her? I am going to invoke her spirit to guide me in these last stages of writing.

New Perfume & Fragrance News: Black Orchid by Tom Ford & A New Line of Unisex Fragrances

black_orchid.jpg

The much awaited Black Orchid by Tom Ford that will come out this fall has been unveiled for WWD. It is an opportunity for Ford to express some of his ideas about the contemporary fragrance scene. As he states,"For the last decade, I think we've launched fragrances which, like everything, have become so stripped-down, so transparent in terms of color and often in terms of scent. They often become quite watered-down…everything is tested and retested, and while you might end up with a lot of fragrances which smell good, it's not fragrance development in the old-fashioned sense. I really wanted to create old-fashioned, but in a new sense."...

New Perfumes: Paprika Brasil & Elixir des Merveilles by Hermès

brazilwood.gif • The house of Hermes has announced that it will launch a 6th perfume in the collection Hermessence called Paprika Brasil. Jean-Claude Ellena, the in-house perfumer was inspired by anthropologist Levi-Strauss' description in Tristes Tropiques of the impact made on European culture by the introduction of the "bois de braise" indigenous to South America.

In the 15th and 16th centuries this wood was massively imported to Europe to serve as a natural red dye. The name of the country Brazil derives from the Portuguese, "pau-brasil" meaning ember-wood due to its orange-red color as it was "discovered" by the former. It is also called brazilwood or pernambuco. The wood is considered uniquely suited to making violin bows. Paprika Brasil will retail for 135 Euros for a bottle of 100 ml or 350 Euros with a special red leather sheath.

• Hermes will also also introduce Elixir des Merveilles, a variation on Eau des Merveilles, in the fall. They consider it to be a major event. Notes include sandalwood, ambergris, chocolate, and orange. The edp will be priced 60 and 95 Euros for the 50 ml and 100 ml bottles. "In parallel, a luxury limited edition (450 bottles priced at €1,100) of Parfum des Merveilles will be offered in a blue Saint Louis crystal bottle by French designer Serge Mansau."

Shopping Tip & Quick Review: Estéban Cèdre, Tonka, & Pivoine

tonka_esteban.jpg

Aedes de Venustas has just received a batch of hard-to-find European fragrances including the relatively recent  releases Cèdre, Tonka, and Pivoine eaux de toilette by Estéban. I very quickly tested these in Paris and, at first sniff, thought that Cèdre was the most interesting until the dry down, that is, which I seem to recall was paradoxically less rich and deep than the body of the perfume. Pivoine, as I recall, was the least exciting, smelling nice but a bit banal. However, I should certainly try to test them again more at length.

Aedes has also received Paestum Rose by Le Sirenuse.

Fragrance News: Style by Jil Sander

jilsander_style.jpg

Coty Prestige has announced the release for September/October 2006 of a new perfume by Jil Sander called Style. The perfume was created by Bernard Ellena of Symrise.

The perfume aims at being a sophisticated fruity-floral and targets 30-35 year old women: "The scent starts with freesia, mango (a first in fine fragrance, according to Ellena), cardamom and pink pepper. Its body mixes violet, magnolia, iris flower and jasmine while the base notes comprise vanilla, amber and musk."

The edp flacon was designed by Patrick Veillet who explains, “My aim was to evoke both a woman’s silhouette and a dress by Jil Sander, added with a spiritual element.” Mirrors reflecting violet light decorate the space between the two blocks.

The fragrance will launch first in Germany, Austria, Eastern Europe, the UK (with an exclusivity at Harrods department store to start with), Benelux, Switzerland and will roll out in 2007.
