Guerlain Takes a Pause from Muguet in 2010 {Fragrance News}

muguet-metro-robert-doisneau.jpg
E-Letter-TSS.jpgEvery year the French celebrate the 1st of May by exchanging gifts of lily of the valley or muguet posies. The Paris sidewalks mushroom with lily of the valley vendors exhibiting their wares in an heteroclite fashion ranging from informal plastic buckets probably used for more menial tasks the rest of the year to cellophane-wrapped bouquets in earthenware pots put together to impress le chaland. This springtime landmark has also given rise to the tradition at the house of Guerlain of releasing a yearly muguet perfume which is sold for a limited time only....

Biolandes Create 3 Oak & Tree Moss Extracts Compliant with IFRA's 43rd Amendment {Fragrance News}

oakmoss.jpgF-Letter-TSS.jpgFrench producer of natural oil essences and extracts Biolandes have announced that they have successfully developed 3 oak and tree moss extracts which can be used in personal perfumes in compliance with IFRA's 43rd Amendment. In the world of perfume lovers, the dwindling away of the material in perfumery due to allergenic precautionary measures was a sore point. Mitsouko by Guerlain had been debased then partially rescued. But other classics of perfumery such as Ma Griffe by Carven, Cabochard by Grès have been disfigured by the treatment and are barely recognizable today. In general, the restriction on oakmoss posed the problem of re-interpreting the classic genre of the chypre fragrance while causing deep frustration over the slow agony of old masterpieces of perfumery. The news could be a harbinger of interesting propositions to come while no doubt, new tastes have been developed meanwhile for the neo-chypres. I think that what matters most in the end is creativity...

New Perfume Portraits by Ormonde Jayne Perfumery {Fragrance News}

ormonde-jayne-harrods-B.jpg

L-Letter-TSS.jpgLondon-based Ormonde Jayne Perfumery have created a new service called Perfume Portraits to help customers better evaluate their aromatic likes and dislikes and thus be able to choose a better perfume for themselves. The psychological component is unmistakable: it is also about the quest to know thyself a little better. Not all want to know themselves but for those who are intrigued by the notion, perfume can be of assistance. Founder and owner Linda Pilkington says that "The perception of smell consists not only of the sensation of the aromas themselves, but of the experiences and emotions associated with them. Smell can evoke strong emotional reactions and this is not an invention of poets or perfumers"...

Update on Jennifer Aniston Fragrance Lola Vie {Perfume News} {Celebrity Scent}

jennifer-aniston-lola-vie-B.jpgOn March 30, 2010 © fotonoticias

A rep for actress Jennifer Aniston corrected the information that was published by Life & Style Mag earlier on today saying the name of the actress' first perfume is Lola Vie, not "Lola V." As I guessed, however intuitively looking at the cryptic Lola V, it is indeed a play on words and means what I thought it might mean...

Jo Malone Cologne Intense Quartet, in the Words of Perfumer Christine Nagel {New Fragrances 2010}

{A fragrance review of Jo Malone Iris & White Musk Cologne Intense has been added to the blog!}

After announcing the upcoming release of Jo Malone Cologne Intense collection a few days ago, we received further information about this very representative launch of our times to take place in July 2010. It is representative because it explores a novel structure of associated freshness and depth, New-Depth, which was inspired by the construction and sensory experiences around the Eau-de-Cologne renaissance transitioning out of the 1990s New-Freshness while wanting to move beyond these experiences. It is also exemplary of the Zeitgeist in the manner in which it seeks to fuse the elements of Arabian Middle Eastern olfactory culture with the European one.

The fragrances are the work of perfumer Christine Nagel who is well-known for her love of the mastery of the ingredients. She mentions on occasion that she likes to "tame" the ingredients, i.e. surmount the material challenges that are inherent to her job.

With the Jo Malone Creative Studio for which she started working in 2009, it is exactly how she operated. Her thought-process revolved around the choice of raw materials in the first place, a fitting approach for the Jo Malone brand in particular which puts emphasis on fragrance pairing and combining. "Each ingredient has a reason for being" Nagel said, "nothing is superfluous"...

8 New Upcoming Books on Smell {Fragrant Readings} {Fragrance News}

little-girl-smell-kennedy.jpgLittle girl smelling a flower at John F. Kennedy's wedding reception by Lisa Larsen, via All Posters.

The upcoming months, from May to September 2010 will see the release of no less than 8 new books focusing on the sense of smell. Is it still the most neglected of the senses? It seems that an evolution is taking place, largely in the English-language world for this cycle and that the answer needs to be qualified now. The movement is strongly didactic in tone - which is a public confession that sleeves need to be rolled up to educate our noses better and earlier on as the output is aimed in great part at children, the future of society.

From this crop of new tomes, no less than 6 are dedicated to the education of young noses as the age target is said to be from 4 to 8 years old. There are regularly new books for children emphasizing the sense of smell, but the harvest is particularly bountiful this time.

One book addresses the issue of anosmia, a topic that has been popular in the media. Another one is about the interrelationship between smell, but also taste, feel, look, action, and sexuality...

Viktor & Rolf Order Cake for Flowerbomb's 5th Anniversary at Hotel Le Meurice {Fragrance News}

Flowerbomb-hotel-meurice-B.jpgFrom left to right: pastry chef Camille Lesecq, head chef Yannick Alléno, perfumer Olivier Polge

Dutch fashion designers Viktor & Rolf decided to take the opportunity of Paris Fashion Week to celebrate the 5th anniversary of their star fragrance Flowerbomb. They threw a party at Le Meurice on March 4, 2010 which featured Grace Jones singing La vie en rose like a showgirl as well as the presentation of a limited-edition pastry co-created by the hotel's head chef, Yannick Alléno, and its pastry chef, Camille Lesecq.

The cake which is called My Sweet Flowerbomb was inspired by the perfume and its pink ribboned and sealed packaging. The jus itself is a work co-signed by perfumers Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaïm and Domitille Bertier. You can see 2009-best-perfumer-of-the-year recipient Olivier Polge pretending to pour some of the fragrance in a mixing bowl held by Yannick Alléno looking on toward Camille Lesecq in the advertising visual shot in the kitchens of the Parisian hotel...

Paco Rabanne to Launch Feminine Counterpart to 1 Million, with Dree Hemingway

Dree-Hemingway.jpg© Paco Rabanne

This summer, expect to discover a new feminine pendant to the bad boy of 1 Million by Paco Rabanne, whose finger-snapping helped make the men's fragrance a success. The coumarin-laden oriental scent for men featuring a copper accord has been hovering at the top of the charts since its launch.

From July 2010, the brand will introduce a feminine perfume which is for now only described as the feminine counterpart to 1 Million without any indication as to what its name or composition will be...

Etat Libre d'Orange Creates Advertising Visual for Tilda Swinton Scent {Perfume Ads} {Fragrance News}

tilda-swinton-ad.jpg
It is not in the habit of a confidential niche perfume house to devote much time, energy, and finances to setting up an advertising campaign. More often than not their motto seems to be: the jus, only the jus! Niche perfumery bottles, for proof, seem to take pride in their minimalism, which does not mean necessarily that they come cheap, but they usually remain imperturbably the same throughout the launches of different creations thus saving funds on the bottle designing front.

In the case however of the upcoming Like This by Tilda Swinton / Etat Libre d'Orange which launches this weekend in Paris, the label decided to take exception to this art-for-art rule of thumb and feature the actress to create a visual impact...

Singer Rihanna Turns to the Fans and Internet for Help in Choosing Perfume Name

rihanna-perfume-name.png
A perfume name can make or break a new fragrance or at least this is what one can assume singer Rihanna is thinking as she has been looking assiduously for a good fragrance name and casting her net wide to do so. Jennifer Aniston is currently doing the same thing but relying more on her inner circle.

Initially tempted by Route 22 (Rihanna is 22 years old) she's decided to turn to fans and the internet for feedback. And they have heard her. After reading about her creative block reported by a source who said,

"Although Rihanna wanted to call it Route 22, she is now unsure and is keen to see what fans can come up with."...

More French Celebrities Enter The Perfume Ring: Melanie Thierry and Marc Lavoine + An Hexagonal Retrospective

melanie-thierry-cesar-B.jpgMélanie Thierry just received the César prize for "meilleur espoir feminine" (best up-and-coming female actress).

Although celebrity and perfume do not seem to mesh as well in French culture as in American pop culture, lately an effort has been made by French brands to corral in the charm of celebrities to create perfume consumption lust.

This is not to say that there were never French celebrity perfumes. In fact in the early days of the 20th century, you could find a signature perfume by actor Jean Marais, the lover and friend of Jean Cocteau. Earlier than that Josephine Baker, an adoptive Parisian, had her name not only on cabaret posters but on fragrance bottles....
