eBay has had to fight several luxury brands and groups lately (Hermès, LVMH, Tiffany, l'Oréal) who accuse the auction site of enabling illegal practices and of de facto allowing the sales of counterfeit products. The biggest blow has come from a French court so far as, not surprisingly, France is known for being extremely protective of one of its leading economic sectors, luxury, and has a history of tough laws on counterfeits (see previous posts)...

The controversial Secret Obsession video: as you can see, it's all left up to your imagination (credit: You Tube)
In a gesture more symbolic than anything else, You Tube has decided to ban the controversial Eva Mendes video for Secret Obsession by Calvin Klein (see previous post) and thus unexpectedly chosen to follow the moral-majority lead of mainstream TV networks. But wait, this is what the Daily Dish - SF Gate reported about a few days ago and now the video is back on another page of You Tube or this is another copy that was left alone by community censors! God bless the human diversity of opinions; there is in fact a little war of the Secret Obsession ad going on! Someone pulls it out, someone else loads it up! Just be ready with your own video of Secret Obsession in case ammunitions start lacking...

Dear Readers, From now on, each month I will be choosing for Glam.com three stand-out scents that I think are the best of the crop, usually for one element or two that they achieve to an exceptional degree...

Please take note and mark your calendars! Here are some wonderful news! Donna Karan have decided to permanently reintroduce several of their iconic fragrances that had become nearly impossible to find and then only at astronomical prices. The new collection housed in similar flacons is simply titled Donna Karan The Fragrance Collection. Chaos won't be a ghost of the past anymore nor Donna Karan Signature nor Fuel for Men. If Black Cashmere and the Essence Collection ( Lavender, Jasmine, Labdanum, Wenge) are slightly less phantasmal, they too had become quite elusive...

I don't know if I have shared one particular Franco-American TV anecdote with you before on this blog, but it is worth retelling in the context of the "controversy" unleashed by Eva Mendes posing suggestively for the upcoming perfume by Calvin Klein, Secret Obsession. But first the context. As we all know, there are no-nos everywhere, the interesting part is that they differ according to the predominant cultural values that are exhibited or advertised by said-culture or sub-culture. In other words, certain things are done in the open and others recede in the background but it is safe to assume that it is not because sexually suggestive images are deemed improper for wider TV-consumption that America is a less sexually active country than others which would, officially, not bat an eyelash at the sight of Eva Mendes's nipple or backside and more generally speaking, soft erotic choreography staged by Fabien Baron to sell Secret Obsession...

An interesting article with some facts and figures in The Financial about the state of the beauty and perfume industry, and how and why it is the case that France is leading the growth of the industry. Among other factors is the best Research & Development tax system you can find in Europe, "The French government actively supports research and has introduced the best R&D tax credit
system in Europe, which reimburses 50% of R&D costs in the first
year. Its budget of over €1.4 billion in 2006 was increased to
approximately €2 billion in 2008, following the reform introduced in
2007", says Philippe Favre, President of Invest in France Agency."

eBay, which was fined recently in an ostentatiously severe fashion ($ 63, 2 million) by a French commercial court for de facto allowing the sale of counterfeit luxury goods on its very popular site, had decided to urgently appeal the judgment. It has now been announced that the court of appeals has confirmed the decision of the commercial court adding an extra (symbolic) fine of 10,000 euros for legal costs. They are maintaining the injunction that the auction site stop selling all perfume and cosmetic goods bearing a brand name from the LVMH luxury group, fake or not, namely: Kenzo, Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy. According to Roger Parloff from Legal Pad, the decision affects the graymarket as well, including individuals who would wish to resell perfumes from these brands received as gifts (no word on vintage perfumes or cosmetics); the graymarket is not an issue in the US. "The lower court's order bans not just sales of counterfeits, but sales of genuine
bottles of these perfumes, because LVMH chooses to limit sales of these
products to exclusive licensed distributors, and it does not permit its
licensed distributors to sell over eBay....

Please note also that December is not covered in this WWD list and November only barely.
As previously reported, Halle Berry is going to contribute to the ever-growing portfolio of Coty's celebrity-endorsed fragrances. Judging from the first photos available, the theme is sunny and beach-y. It does not seem that the Halle Berry fragrance will go in the direction of a super glamorous fur-and-diamonds perfume. Brown Sista reports on the commercial shoot in Hawaii and she offers a few more pictures.
On July 8th 2008 in Paris, designer John Galliano, the artistic director for Dior Couture, launched his debut signature fragrance in the rather intimate settings of his studio located in the 20th arrondissement. The tag line goes " Le parfum no. 1 de John Galliano". He previously created a home fragrance with Diptyque under his name called Essence of John Galliano, a wonderful scent smelling of a bonfire. He also had a say in the Dior La Collection Particulière. The signature John Galliano perfume was developed by Selective Beauty who is also in charge of the Bulgari, Agent Provocateur, Burberry, and Benetton brands. No information yet on the notes, but the bottle can be admired: it looks wild, baroque, talismanic, mysterious, gothic! It looks promising if the jus feels anything like the external aesthetics of the flacon. The studio baroque and eclectic interior design seemed to correspond well to the style of the bottle... Dior have re-looked their perfume website, as they visibly wish to reach out to online consumers. The layout indicates they are very much aware that their clientèle is part of the new-luxury trend and expect more detailed information about fragrances than just the common ad-copy fare. As already apparent in their press releases, a new attention is paid to telling the stories of perfumery ingredients, no doubt under the influence of new in-house "parfumeur-créateur" François Demachy;the perfumer previously worked for Chanel and is also the perfume supervisor, if you will, for the LVMH group which owns Dior. Escale à Portofino, a refined, creative eau de cologne, is now available online for 83 €...

Luggage brand Coach has issued a new limited-edition bottle for its debut eponymous fragrance, Coach launched last year. It picks up the same decorative logo theme as found on the original flacon but colors it in bright shades. That's the good news for fans of the fragrance. The bad news is that it is already sold out online. You will need to cross your fingers and hunt it down by calling different Coach stores.
The new in-house perfumer for Guerlain, Thierry Wasser, explains to L'Express that as Guerlain launches on average 20 perfumes a year, that "one can't do everything". The next major Guerlain feminine launch will thus be the fruit of his collaboration with Annick Menardo, an ex co-author of fragrances. She also created Bois d'Arménie for Guerlain.....

Tom Ford announced that they are planning the launch of 3 new Private Blend fragrances. Italian Cypress will be exclusive to the Milan Tom Ford boutique; persisting in his avowed taste for the Seventie's (see Gucci pour Homme and Yves Saint Laurent M7) Ford said, "It's a very Seventie's gentlemen's fragrance, the kind that you don't encounter very much any more." .....

The new Perry Ellis for Men is generating quite a buzz, what with the handsome bottle, the glam Italianate advertising and the teasing scent strips in the glossies from the end of spring 2008. After TSS posted earlier on about the upcoming cologne, there was a palpable surge of interest for the fragrance both from people on the blog and via email. Readers asked questions about its whereabouts as it has been tricky to track down the fragrance in stores and online. The local Boston Macy's men's perfume counter rep unexpectedly stated that they did not carry Perry Ellis fragrances. Perry Ellis had the following to say,....
