A Conference on the Future of Natural Perfumery by Yves de Chiris, Nov 22, 2011 {Scented Paths & Fragrant Addresses}

Grasse_space_dolphin.jpgWith rapidly expanding markets for natural and organic perfumes, some Grasse perfume industry insiders are seeing a new opportunity profiling itself on the horizon for the former craddle of perfumery. The Southern French city has long been reputed for its experience in and knowledge of natural raw materials. As synthetic aromachemicals became widely spread in the late 19th century, it took second place to Paris in the field of creative perfumery. Yves de Chiris, one of the thinking heads behind Angel by Thierry Mugler and a member of the local fragrance industry establishment is seeing a possible rising from its ashes for this ancient phoenix of natural perfumery...

Madison_Perfumery_Hungary.jpgMadison Perfumery est. 2007, is a particularly sleek rendez-vous for perfume lovers in Bucharest, Romania. They have just opened a second perfumery in Budapest, Hungary. Like for the first one, Madison Perfumery on Andrassy Ut aims to offer an atmosphere of privilege and luxury. The design mixing old-world Central European charm and a modern, polished, urban sensitivity caught our attention.

Illuminum Haute Perfume Collection Launches in Illuminum Fragrance Lounge (2011) {New Perfumes} {Scented Paths & Fragrant Addresses}

Illuminum_2.jpgToday and as announced previously, a new perfume destination in London was inaugurated, the Illuminum Fragrance Lounge, which houses Michael Boadi Illuminum collections of scents. Within that label, a new library of perfumes was created entitled Illuminum Haute Perfume which is reportedly even more exclusive than the original one where ingredients are concerned,

"British Perfumer Michael Boadi’s Illuminum fragrance collection is to launch one of the largest independent perfumeries on the planet at 41/42, Dover Street, in the heart of London's Mayfair. Based in an elegant Georgian townhouse, the 1500 sq ft of retail space will be devoid of counters and the usual accoutrement of retailing, and instead feature wide, modular sofas, soft deep pile rugs over parquet flooring and the calming atmosphere of a boutique hotel"...

Sweet-Osmanthus Viewing & Delicacies in Hangzhou {Scented Paths & Fragrant Addresses} {Fragrant Recipes & Taste Notes}

Hangzhou_Botanical_Garden.jpgThe city of Hangzhou in the Zhejiang province in Eastern China holds a month-long festival each year in October which is dedicated to the iconic flower, Osmanthus Fragrans. It is one of the most delicate and costly floral scents to be had in perfumery. Here are several suggestions for viewing the flowers and tasting the specialties inspired by them.

"The Hangzhou Children's Park, more often known as the Hangzhou Meilong Guiyu Park has the largest number of sweet osmanthus trees in the city. More than 4000 sweet osmanthus trees make the Children's Park the most crowded place in Hangzhou to view the flowers in autumn. However, what makes the park special is not the large quantity of sweet osmanthus trees but the delicacies that are made from the sweet-scented flowers. There are an increasing number of family restaurants emerging in nearby areas that specialize in sweet osmanthus food such as sweet osmanthus porridge, sweet osmanthus cake and drinks distilled from sweet osmanthus."....

Shop for Perfume at Bluefly or at Discounters? That is The Question {Scented Paths & Fragrant Addresses}

fragrance-shopping.jpg

WWD announced this morning that Bluefly.com is now opened for perfume business offering up to 40% discount on luxury, prestige fragrance brands. “Our fashion-conscious customers view fragrances as an extension of fashion and personal style,” said Melissa Payner, president and chief executive officer of Bluefly.com. So we decided to go visit and take a look around.

A first impression is that the selection is very hum drum by perfumista's standards and particularly devoid of personality. Clearly the site is not trying to attract thanks to an unique selection or mix of fragrance labels. Second, suprisingly, prices that could be much lower are still healthy by perfume-discount-boutique standards...

Bases & Specialties in Perfumery: Lecture by Perfumers Jean Kerléo & Pascal Sillon on December 11, 2010 {Scented Paths & Fragrant Addresses}

hunt-gather-gocco3_perfumes.jpg

The Osmothèque in Versailles is a relatively little known resource that can be tapped into by the general public who want to be more versed in the history of perfumery. Erudition shouldn't be considered off-putting as it is supported by practical smelling sessions. The educational institution is so keen on transmitting knowledge on the French patrimony that their conferences are open to children from 12 years old....
