The preamble. What you saw when you entered the salon (among other things). A hostess from the brand Côte d'Or was distributing samples. I didn't try those because they are easy to find in supermarkets. But as you can see, the mood was welcoming.
Parisians don't just eat their chocolate in silence, they talk about it and would stand there with their chocolate in the mouth then in the air exchanging remarks and looking like they were tasting with their brains, which is actually what takes place.
Last week Paris held its annual Salon du Chocolat, a mega fair for chocolate lovers and professionals founded by Sylvie Douce and François Jeantet. The 2009 vintage was its 15th edition. Being a global affair, it will soon take place in New York city as the Chocolate Show on October 30 - November 1, 2009. Then Shanghai, Tokyo, Moscow and Madrid will follow. One of the highlights of this annual cacao folly (featuring also the complementary vanilla and other treats) is the lineup of fashion creations made out of chocolate. This year the central theme of inspiration was Opera. There were daily catwalk shows. It is a way to display local craftsmanship and attract crowds who are always sensitive to spectacular entries. There were oohs and aahs and the occasional biting comment from the ever demanding Parisians who could not taste the chocolate-turned-into-dresses but could nevertheless try to ascertain the level of difficulty of the different designs. A funny comment came from someone who admired a dress as being the real deal and then concluded that some of the other creators by comparison were just crooks who wanted to make you believe that they had done anything special. Today I am listing group 1 of the chocolate-y fashion garments. There will be two more, the way they were organized at the show. I will also be posting more pictures in an upcoming post to show some of the latest chocolate trends at the Salon and there will be giveaways of goodies that I hand-picked, courtesy of TSS for people living in northern climes because otherwise you will end up with a pool of chocolate and flower petals... It was hard to tell whether the material had been dipped in chocolate or whether it was all chocolate. Chocolats Pralus, Marithé + François Girbaud.

Australian niche perfumery Libertine Parfumerie have opened their second store in Brisbane. The boutique is co-directed by Nick Smart, Jason Carlton and Joel Morehu-Barlow whose goal it is to bring exclusive niche perfumery to their country. The trio also heads a niche distribution company named Agence de Parfum. Nick Smart said, "Libertine Parfumerie, coupled with agence de parfum, are dedicated to filling a void for niche perfume houses in the Australian market. "
"Some of the most coveted fragrances in the world are created by niche perfumeries and until now, Australians have had only limited if any access to such high-end brands. "With the exception of a handful of stores, niche perfumery has not been well represented in Australia and we felt it was time to overcome this and give Australians the opportunity to learn about some of the rarer, prestige fragrances on the market," he said...

Jean Patou offers the opportunity for one of the nicest perfume promenades to be taken on the internet. Their website takes a historic perspective on the itinerary of the brand. The design is trailed with flowers on which you click to access more information. A host of historic pictures gives flesh to a name that has graced the bottles of Joy, 1000, Sira des Indes, Normandie, Vacances and so many more, some which are utterly forgotten like the cocktail range: Cocktail Dry, Cocktail Sweet, Cocktail Bitter Sweet. They were modern enough to be the initiators of the early sun tan oil and "beach fragrance" Huile de Chaldée (1927). The house perfumers are honored with mentions and an in-house genealogy.
Eiphur Perfume Hutte is apparently a perfumery that sells smell-alikes in Beijing, China. In a variation of the decanting perfume business, here the fragrances are sold by the milliliter from topsy-turvy bottles at a bar. You can purchase vials or perfume bottles in the store too. The pottery fragrance bottles are completely wild. The shopper appreciated finding scents by CK and Hugo Boss for a fraction of the going prices...

A new Guerlain museum is in the making. To begin to discover it, there is an exhibition which should delight Guerlain collectors and followers which opened on June 27, 2009 in the city of Eu near Dieppe in the Normandy region called " Du Bousillé...au musée Sylvie Guerlain". It will run until September 6, 2009. The goal of this exhibition is to reveal to the public both the works of local glassmakers who would use leftovers from molten glass to practice during their breaks and to offer a first look at the reportedly fabulous Guerlain collection of Sylvie Guerlain a descendant of the family of perfumers. The link to glass-making is more generally meaningful also because it is in this region between Rouen and Amiens in the vallée de la Bresle that is located La Glass Vallée (Glass Valley), the world leader in the production of luxury flacons. The site covers 80% of the global production of fragrance bottles in the sector of luxury... The place for the temporary Guerlain exhibit

Jazz composer Laurent Assoulen is giving a concert at the Théâtre du Châtelet on June 8, 2009 at 9 pm which is at once a musical event and an olfactory one. Like each year the Lilac Festival of Rochester takes place and with it comes the year's vintage edition of the perfume Highland Lilac of Rochester created in 1967 under the impulse of Dan Morgan. The fragrance was reintroduced in 2003. It is dubbed an American classic and reportedly was presented to a number of first ladies. Lilac does not yield its perfume by classic methods of extraction and so its bouquet must be recreated as an illusion, but in this case it appears that the perfumers at IFF attempt to reproduce each year's particular notes....

Guerlain will open its 12th standalone store in July 2009 in Le Marais district in Paris. As noted previously, this artistic neighborhood has recently slowly evolved into being one of the noteworthy perfume-shopping centers of the French capital city. Guerlain, as it happens, will be next to the new Diptyque boutique which opened last year. Bobbi Brown just opened a boutique on the same street. The new destination will be located at: 10, rue des Francs-Bourgeois 75004 Paris Via Madame FigaroPhoto credit: Wikimedia - Rue des Francs-Bourgeois going towards the Place des Vosges.
I am so glad. Guerlain have finally revamped their website! I used to visit it episodically wishing each time to see some improvement, then ceased frequenting it because it was not very practical, and now it's happened. I could not quite understand why in the context of luxury brands proposing sophisticated websites, why on earth Guerlain seemed not to care about their online presence. The previous website was very static merely acting as a catalogue, not even a comprehensive one at that. Things have changed as you can see by visiting the new destination (in French, English, Japanese and Chinese) at Guerlain. The site looks stylish. It offers information even about their exclusive niche fragrance lines; they give a number of perfume-applying tips, perfume workshop information, fragrance consultations, historical outlines on their creators, associated artists, raw materials etc. You can even register to have your own space there and receive advance notices about new releases. It's still not an e-commerce site though...

With regard to perfume, it is well-known that Yves Saint Laurent took inspiration from an inro from his personal collection to design the flacon of Opium. A famous perfume-related object is listed for the auction: the Marcel Duchamp Belle Haleine flacon estimated at between $1,260,676 - $1,891,014. Antique Chinese incense burners are also part of the auction. A book was recently released in its French version in February 2009 covering the topic of this exceptional private collection, Les paradis secrets d'Yves Saint Laurent et de Pierre Bergé, also available from today Feb 23, 2009 in English, The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, by the same author, Robert Murphy. A fascinating exhibition on the Treasures of the Black Death will open on February 19, 2009 and run until May 10, 2009 at the Wallace Collection in London. As the plague raged in 14th century Europe, Jewish communities were used as scapegoats and forced to leave town or even massacred. When expelled they had the time to bury their possessions carefully in the hope of retrieving their belongings when they would come back, seemingly leaving everything behind them. In a black death treasure found in Erfurt, east of Frankfurt, a 650 years old medieval perfume bottle that would have been carried on a waist chain was found. L'Oréal scientists attempted to analyze the remnants of the scent...

A. K. sent us some pictures taken from the new fashion exhibition in Paris entitled Sous L'Empire des Crinolines (Under The Influence of Crinolines). They were taken during a private viewing on inauguration night, with a cell-phone, which gives you an instantaneous reportage quality and casts on the gowns a crystalline light and opaline-like finish, adding to the sense of distance in time while turning them into never-before-seen modern snapshots of antique fashion, taken on the quick. In that era, the famous perfumers of the day were Guerlain, Coudray, L.T. Piver, Lubin, Houbigant, Gellé Frères... But beyond a short-list of names, we have a passage from La Curée (The Kill) by Emile Zola (translation by Brian Nelson) which beautifully conveys some of the atmosphere and habitual practices in the arenas of fashion and perfume under the Second Empire in Paris as character Maxime visits the great couturier of the second empire, Worms (the fictionalized character of Charles Frederick Worth). Summer gowns
In fact fashion and perfume here seem to become one under Zola's pen, whose writing as usual offers uncanny evocative power based on and prepared beforehand by meticulous ethnographic research (he would routinely note down in his notebooks the smells he encountered in his literally, fieldwork trips). One should also note that the fashions of the time were said to have become so
ostentatious that an observer reported that it had become nearly
impossible to distinguish an honest bourgeoise woman from a peripatetician
based on their outfits alone. Scented Quote of the Day from Emile Zola: "This quaint little creature (Maxime), who during his English lessons read the prospectuses which his perfumer sent him every Friday, could have delivered a brilliant lecture on the fashions of Parisian high society, customers and purveyors included, at an age when country urchins are too shy to look their housemaids in the face. Often, on his way home from school, he would bring back in his tilbury a bonnet, a box of soap, or a piece of jewelry which his stepmother had ordered the day before. He always had a strip of musk-scented lace in his pockets...

The Musée Galliera in Paris is organizing a fashion exhibition devoted to sartorial tastes during the French second empire (1852-1870) and to its central indulgence, for women, the crinoline. The exhibit is titled Sous l'Empire des Crinolines (Under the Influence of Crinolines) and will run from November 29, 2008 to April 26, 2009. One reason why it might be interesting for perfume aficionados to visit this exhibition is of course because the era is a period of expansion for the perfume house of Guerlain, which then managed to secure the patronage of the empress Eugénie thanks to its Eau de Cologne Impériale whose therapeutic virtues were said to alleviate her migraines. It is still available today...

We announced the other day that the house of Guerlain was taking to the street for their new perfume, Guerlain Homme. The jungle display at Opéra Garnier for the new Guerlain Homme looked nice but the atmosphere was flat. The only emotional reaction the event elicited in me was a smile after I heard, several times over, the line from the Guerlain Homme commercial by Jean-Paul Goude booming across the street: " pour l'animal qui dort en vous" " for the animal that sleeps in you". Contrasted with the sedate ambience and the unconcerned or weary airs of the tourists resting on the steps of the opéra, many of them white-haired, it was rather amusing. This attempt to reach out to urbanites where they are to be found, on the street, seemed to be marred by a lack of staff support from Guerlain. If the decoration was pleasing to the eye and the Goude commercial well-visible and audible from a distance, the impact on passers-by seemed minimal. A couple of fragrance models were supposed to cover the large stretch of sidewalk girding the front of the opera house and they were huddled together in exactly the same spot joking between themselves while spraying almost absent-mindedly on strips of paper without offering any eye contact to their consenting victims. The lack of conviction was palpable. There were no Mojitos in sight to refresh potential customers and I realized after leaving the scene that the air smelled of nothing...

If advertising for the cologne has been quite present so far in department stores and Guerlain boutiques decorated with rainforest walls and rolling counters complete with a cascading green floral arrangement suggesting a corner of the Amazonian forest, artificial icecubes in a bold square glass, silvery Mojito shaker, didactic pictures of ingredients, blotters, and the fragrance itself, all this posted at strategic corners, it is now exceptionally lavish. By going to both the modernist setting of the Esplanade de la Défense (11-12 September 2008) and to the more classical one of Opéra Garnier (12-13 September), Guerlain seem to be positioning themselves to say that in the 21st century they are at ease both with modernity and tradition, civilization and wildness...

Niche perfumer Stéphanie de Saint-Aignan opened her first standalone boutique in the Marais neighborhood this summer 2008. Good choice! The Marais is certainly the area of Paris in which I have smelled the most numerous niche-perfume trails. She is not the only one to have recently decided to locate her perfumery there (see Diptyque, The Different Company) which makes that quarter even more one of the must-perfume-circuits-to-tour for perfumistas. Address: Boutique du Marais 26, rue de Poitou 75003 Paris Tel: 01 42 24 07 99
Although the new Paco Rabanne 1 Million fragrance for men is already available at Sephora in France, the publicity campaign in the UK is only just kicking off. Yes, I know, we already showed you the TV commercial and I have a great-looking advert somewhere in my files to boot, but let's take things more slowly for a minute, shall we? At least, this is what an early chapter of the campaign imagined for the British market reveals with the setting-up of a micro-website dedicated to making you feel great about yourself, in other words to feel like a 1-Million-Dollar man. How so? The creative focus here is on " opening the doors to virtual celebrity", to anyone willing to play the game. As you know, to attain celebrity is the new idea paradisiacal ideal of the early 21st century, an impression not disproved by the inflation of celebrity perfume launches...

Please take note and mark your calendars! Here are some wonderful news! Donna Karan have decided to permanently reintroduce several of their iconic fragrances that had become nearly impossible to find and then only at astronomical prices. The new collection housed in similar flacons is simply titled Donna Karan The Fragrance Collection. Chaos won't be a ghost of the past anymore nor Donna Karan Signature nor Fuel for Men. If Black Cashmere and the Essence Collection ( Lavender, Jasmine, Labdanum, Wenge) are slightly less phantasmal, they too had become quite elusive...

A Visit to the Exhibition "Marie-Antoinette" in Paris by Guest Contributor Pauline “Moving” is the word that best describes the overall feeling I retained after I visited the exhibition “Marie-Antoinette” currently on view (until 30 June 2008) at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris.
Although much has been written about the life of the last queen of France (1755-1793) and her private quarters can be visited at the Château de Versailles, it was the first time that I have had the opportunity to experience so palpably actual everyday objects that were seen, used and worn by Marie-Antoinette. The fate of the young Austrian archduchess - who was born in 1755 - was sealed when she was only 9 years old when her mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, decided to conclude a political marriage alliance with the heir of the throne of France. She was married in 1770 at age 15 to the Dauphin, the future Louis XVI, and became queen at the age of 20........ The lunch set used by Marie Theresa empress of Austria, the mother of Marie-Antoinette. She had 16 children with Francis I Holy Roman Emperor and Duke of Lorraine.

The University of Sunderland is organizing an olfactory exhibition on Extinct & Impossible Smells. Fully embracing the idea that there exist no good or bad smells, the recreated scents include classic seductive smells like that of the hair of Cleopatra but also more repulsive ones - at least morally - like that of the smell in the atmosphere after the drop-out of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, which is a rather clean abstraction of the smell of human suffering, mangled bodies, and consequent genetic sicknesses that it created. One can wonder if they had proposed the smell of the forest not far from the gas chambers and bodies burning at Auschwitz if that would not have met with some public outcry. One fears that there might be an element of "olfactory voyeurism" and spectacle involved at the same time that it temperates the original violence of the reality by only alluding to it in order to make it tolerable.
More neutrally-connoted smells and requiring even more of an effort of representation is found for example in the possibility of sniffing the "surface of the sun", "It is hard to sum up. It is an atmospheric smell, like walking into a room when the sun has been pouring in," says Blackson. "It gives a freshness, a sun kissed feel with a bit of metal. If you can say something smells hot, this is it."

Odalisk by Seb Janiak © Pauline/The Scented Salamander I have the great pleasure of introducing our new contributor, Pauline. She is based in Paris, enjoys fragrance but is even more interested in beauty and cultural topics in general and will write on these from time to time. Today, she reports in words and pictures on the current Opium Express exhibition by Yves Saint Laurent in Paris which runs until January 19, 2008. "Taking the Opium Express" by Pauline, Guest Contributor
To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent's most famous perfume, Opium, an exhibition or “espace ephémère” (lit. ephemeral space) as the French call it was created in the heart of the Marais neighborhood in Paris in order to rediscover this sensual fragrance through an artistic and sensory itinerary, meant to be taken at a leisurely pace. The exhibit proves to be a succession of unforeseen surprises and sensory delights. One is invited along the way to slide open the drawers of a mysterious curios cabinet and discover their exotic contents, sip fragrant tea in the tea room, and even take a relaxing massage. Opium was inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's numerous travels to Morocco, Japan, China, Mongolia, India and Turkey and these multi-cultural sources of inspiration form the theme of the “Opium Express” exhibit.......

A beautiful exhibition called Les Années Folles (1919-1929) can currently be seen at the Musée Galliera de la Mode de la Ville de Paris. It offers a retrospective on the fashion and beauty culture of the Roaring Twenties showing the progressive emancipation of the feminine body. The era saw the birth of the garçonne and a host of convenient symbols of emancipation such as smoking in public, driving a car, wearing short dresses and short hair, signs that hardly masked the fact that the right to vote was still denied to women in France and would be until 1944. In the US, thanks to the suffragette movement, national women's vote was established earlier, by 1920. The first country in the world to grant women the official right to vote was actually New Zealand in 1893.......

We recently happened on the site of a young Hungarian perfumer named Zsolt Zolyomi. We asked him if he could tell us a bit more about himself and his brand, Parfums Zsolt Zolyomi. We were interested in knowing what perfumes he had created as we saw that he had been involved in several projects that typically included social events.
It turns out that he is currently hard at work setting up a perfume store in Budapest and being very conscious that this is an area of cultural appreciation that remains to be developed in Hungary, he is directing his efforts in this direction at the moment. His avowed goal is to reconnect with the roots of modern Western perfumery in Hungary, which famously took place in the 14th century with the creation of the Eau de la Reine de Hongrie, a rosemary-based perfume and lotion reputed to have rejuvenated Elizabeth of Kujavia (1305-1380). Apart from that, his style, what we like to think of as a poetico-realistic style nurtured by nostalgia and memories of happiness but not exclusively, perhaps a little bit à la Christopher Brosius in the US, seems to be a strong one at the moment in his work. We are certainly looking forward to smelling a Hungarian summer in the countryside ......

I had the opportunity to speak with a rep from Nina Ricci, a charming and very helpful young man by the way, and the following is the complementary information I was given. According to Nina Ricci, the possibility of purchasing the classic fragrances Coeur Joie (1946), Fille d'Eve (1952), Capricci (1961), and Farouche (1974) has always remained. The way the system works is that you need to custom-order them unless the very select perfumery you address yourself to happens to have the scent you are looking for....

Hi-
I really enjoy your blog--I think you are doing something unique and interesting. A real pleasure to read.
I have two questions for you that may be easy for you to answer.
First, where is the Parfums de Rosine boutique in Paris; I have been told that it's in the Palais Royal, but never found it. And I have never seen the Rosines anywhere in Paris except at a Foire in the Tuileries last year, of Saveurs et Senteurs. But no one there knew where to find the Rosines in Paris either.
Also, I have been reading some of the French perfume boards, and keep seeing mention of an Amber fragrance "de chez Ecuador" and I absolutely cannot figure out what this is. Can you help?
Many many thanks, All best Camille Camille, many thanks for your letter, here is my answer to your query:.....

I have realized there are so many interesting niche and even very niche perfume brands and stores out there that need to have the spotlight on them more that I have decided to compile a specialized directory of niche perfumeries (both of the brands themselves and of the stores carrying those niche perfume brands). Eventually I will add the big perfume houses but since these are better known I'll leave them until later.
It's also a way for me to finally organize more systematically what I had started doing by creating a "Scented Paths & Fragrant Addresses" resource....

A new perfume museum, the Annette Green Perfume Museum opened in downtown Los Angeles on 17 October 2006. Its fund is made up of a collection of 1, 600 fragrance bottles collected by the emeritus president of the New York-based Fragrance Foundation. This new permanent collection succeeds to the Annette Green Museum at the Fragrance Foundation previously opened in 1999 which is considered to be the first fragrance museum in the US. The originality of the new museum is that it looks at perfume history as closely interrelated with that of fashion. It is located at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising...
