 A French advert for M & S from 2000
Last spring, Marks and Spencer announced news that were heartwarming to many a fan of the British retail store: they will be back in Paris in the fall of 2011 - probably in November - just before Christmas to surf on the wave of the Holidays shopping season. It had been 10 years since they left. But even if they came back at less momentous date, there is little doubt that they would see signs that they were dearly missed on the Parisian landscape. If you can still satiate your taste for some British delicacies at La Grande Epicerie du Bon Marché, the offerings are not as wide-ranging, nor have that casual, everyday feel which makes you become a de facto participant in British daily rituals...

 Marine archeologists found a luxury-goods stash on the Mary Celestia which was shipwrecked in 1864. Among the contraband items were two intact bottles of perfumes. One of them is still very much available, Florida Water by Murray and Lanman, and the other one still needs to be fully identified by fragrance expert David Pybus in the U.K, who also worked on scents found in the ruins of the Titanic....

 Late-night show host Conan O'Brien thought what was lacking from the celebrity-fragrance landscape was a cologne inspired by him. His new perfume is called Midnight Potato No.5. From there, O'Brien launches into a spoof and offers a non-sensical fragrance commercial filled with overblown pathos and voiced-over with the requisite French accent.
The most hilarious part for me was the finale and the delivery with which a tired, blasé and highly snob-sounding French voice says "Available in..some... stores." Check out the video after the jump...

 Hélène Rochas, the widow of fashion designer Marcel Rochas, passed away on August 6th, 2011 at the age of 84. A private funerary ceremony was held today which will be followed by a religious ceremony in September.
She met her future husband while riding on the Parisian metro. It is reported that Marcel Rochas who was her senior by 25 years approached her proclaiming that she had the kind of head that was meant to wear hats. He married her several months after their first encounter when she was a young model of only 17. She hoped to have a career as an actress but her marriage put a stop to her stage ambitions. Most noteworthy is the fact that director Jacques Becker wanted to cast her as Casque d'Or, but Marcel Rochas out of jealousy prevented her from accepting the offer.
