Marion Cotillard with a new crimped updo, which might do the same trick as the accessory advertised in the faux commercial. After the Césars ceremony in France, in February 2010. © Dominique C.Actress Marion Cotillard plays in a faux English-language commercial with an authentic educational aim to help fight against sexual harassment in the workplace. The funny ad reveals the best-kept secret of French women to foster greater respect towards women in a male-dominated environment. Only, the best-kept secret sounds like a beauty product made in Hollywood and born out of the mind of a feverish entrepreneur, with a real vision though...

I wrote last time about how the pubis, which some confuse with the vagina curiously, has become the new grooming terrain for the thumb up and the thumb down on Swarovski crystals being applied "down there." Historically, both beauty professionals and fiends have done their best to delineate new body parts to focus on with special, refined treatments. Now tattoos on the derriere would be considered a sedate option so the new buzz-worthy beauty frontier to be pushed has been the pubis. And vajazzling. The term was apparently coined by actress Jennifer Love Hewitt. In a valiant effort to put images on words, New York City based blogger Bryce Gruber of The Luxury Spot was contacted to go on a vajazzling mission. She went, was filmed and photographed and offers us the first pictures of the treatment. She said, "I'm here to cover up my C
section scar. I'm here to give the women of America options."...

I think women subconsciously know that red that is a sexual enhancer. Even at the most informal level, we will say that a red dress or lipstick is "provocative." Here is an article explaining why red is on your side when you are looking for a mate, literally speaking, and why you ought to modulate your reds if you want to be left alone, "A new study by
two University of Rochester psychologists adds color - literally and
figuratively - to the age-old question of what attracts men to women.
Through five experiments, Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta demonstrate
that the color red makes men feel more amorous toward women. Most
surprisingly, men are unaware of the role the color plays in their
attraction."

"The pubis is the most intimate part of our bodies. Yet, it does not escape trends..."It seems that a new frontier of public feminine beauty talk has been discovered: the pubis. While reading a report yesterday on actress Jennifer Love Hewitt who was encouraged by George Lopez to broadcast on TV her favorite pubic routine - the Swarovski pavé of crystals - and thinking something like, bah, a quirk, I've had to reconsider my take on this after opening my Elle France this morning. There is a whole article on pubic hair but what is more unusual is that the advice is illustrated by a series of pictures of models unveiling their vajayjays as Hewitt likes to say. Okay, so you have the variations, the "triangle", the "flaming bush", you know, it's like clouds in the sky almost, you can let your imagination run a bit. Men give their opinions...

Alternatively this post could have also been titled Everyone in the Public Eye Gets Photoshopped. I think it's important to stress this phenomenon as a blogger so that no naive souls think they have to try to emulate or marry gods and goddesses. I happened on a New Yorker article from last year about the emblematic work of Pascal Dangin whom you may not know by name but whose work is widely publicized in fashion magazines. His job is emblematic of today's obsession with digital perfection. Our criteria have been pushed so much that we almost cannot look at a normal photo without thinking that it could be a little more superhuman-perfect...

Remember Twiggy? This is how she used to look in the 1960s: She was the 1960s for many. Here is another look where her signature silhouette is particularly twig-like: Now a controversy is raging in the UK because Twiggy just came back at age 59 to be the face of Olay and members of the Democratic Liberal party think there ought to be a law stating that photoshopped ads are so, so that naïve children and teenagers do not start thinking all this is realistic. All fashion photographies are photoshopped to make mouths look bigger, eyes more cat-like, legs longer, skin poreless, bodies slimmer. It's a vice of the fashion industry who can never find a human being that is perfect enough to incarnate its brand. I once watched a program where a beautiful model was being "fixed" at every stage of the photo shoot to see if they were getting what they wanted...

After having perused the website Awful Plastic Surgery which keeps track of all the botched plastic surgeries undergone by celebs, you have to throw up your arms in the air and ask: "Why, oh why?". The most heartbreaking examples are those of people who were naturally good-looking but then decided through a singular, sick distortion of their minds to become ugly through surgery. They apparently think, the poor things, that they look better or maybe their entourage tells them so. Something along the lines of "you've got the right freakish look that will show you're a real Hollywood sophisticate plus nobody is going to be jealous of you anymore so hey, less competition!" The example of Nikki Cox was a shocker for me, who turned from angelic-faced to banal Hollywood look casualty. Then I got sick and tired of the trout lip, the linker sausage lip, the pillow lip, the clown lips. Those mouths just look ungodly, like old-fashioned buoys, the bigger, the better...

When the economy goes bad, there is always room for hope beauty treatments, it seems. As a sign of these times of change symbolised by Inauguration Day 09 today, people want to look their best in the hope of reflecting and helping to make come about a better and more ideal world. So, while we wait for things to pick up, what better quick fix but to look younger, fresher and more upbeat thanks to Botox and Hyaluronic acid? Some beauty professionals are NOT experiencing a downturn in business,

After posting about the possible implications of a research from Ilinois about the importance of looks for political candidates for winning more votes and wondering what that might mean for Sarah Palin whose looks have been particularly commented upon during the presidential campaign, what do I see but a charity auction on eBay for the 25th anniversary of the Cabbage Patch Kids featuring all 4 candidates! And guess who is winning? Sarah Palin a.k.a. "caribou barbie" (another popular icon of feminine beauty) is doing very well as the Sarah Palin Cabbage Patch Kid. She is currently priced at $9,600 followed by Barack Obama at $2,125 then John McCain at $1,525 and Joe Biden at $710 ( see for yourself).
A study at Northwestern University in Illinois (is this a coincidence?) shows that there are consistent trends in people's reliance on "cognitive short-cuts" to help them select a political candidate running for office. It is not the best man or woman who wins their votes necessarily (we didn't know that yet) but the better-looking one, a tendency especially apparent in the cases of women running for office when not too many other female colleagues are competing. Apparently, we tend to choose a candidate, say for the presidency, as we would a mate with a view to biological reproduction, except for an air of competence that has to be there. A scary thought for Halloween no doubt, but yes, we would tend to be visual animals responding to sexual cues, in courtship as in politics even when we make the effort to go vote after having read and dissected the news. And then it's all about the survival of the prettiest anyway! "Everyone had to seem competent to get a vote. But while men needed
to appear approachable to get an edge, women had to be good-looking,
the researchers found...
