Fleur du Mâle by Jean-Paul Gaultier {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Perfume} {Men's Cologne}

FleurDuMale_Roses.png

Floral fragrances for men still constitute a minority group in modern Western smell culture, notwithstanding the creations of memorable perfumes such as Caron Pour Un Homme (lavender), Dior Eau Sauvage (jasmine/hedione), Dior Fahrenheit (violet), and more recently, Dior Homme (iris). Having survived from the 19th century, we can also still find perfumes like Penhaligon Hammam Bouquet (1872) and Guerlain Jicky (1889) which have marked floral characters. Jicky was originally meant to be a unisex fragrance but was adopted by men first.....

Iris Ganache by Guerlain {New Perfume}

iris-ganache_guerlain.jpg

Guerlain is being wonderfully prolific this year and is launching a series of perfumes that appear full of promise. At the very least, they can certainly take credit for giving distinctive names to their fragrances, evocative ones even, like Iris Ganache. They help us remember we are to expect something new and exciting. So many fragrances nowadays are just flankers or brand extension vehicles bearing confusingly similar names! Having said that, flankers with repetitious names are also to be found at the Guerlain House.....

Un Peu, Beaucoup, A La Folie by Marina Marinof {Perfume Shopping Tip}

Un_peu_beaucoup_lafolie.jpg

Looking for something a little different? Perfume designer Marina Marinof was inspired by her Russian grand-mother to live life to the fullest and see causes for happiness in the littlest and simplest things of life. Inspired by her, she designed a line of Epicurean optimistic fragrances that comes packaged in some of the most adorable wooden Russian dolls you ever saw. It's all about context. Put a fragrance in a re-decorated matrioshka and a commonplace souvenir becomes something a little more unexpected. Her grand-mother's motto is inscribed on the doll: C'est rien que du bonheur! (Happiness is to be found in everything!)

L'Ombre Fauve by Parfumerie Générale {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Perfume}

L'OmbreFauve.jpg

L'Ombre Fauve (Tawny/Bestial Shadow) is one of the latest offerings by Parfumerie Générale. The perfume was created by Pierre Guillaume, founder of and perfumer for the house.

The beauty of this fragrance to me is striking and moreover magnetic in its aura, relying principally on effects of depth and texture rather than search for unusual notes taken in isolation.....

Belle en Rykiel by Sonia Rykiel {New Perfume}

BelleEnRykiel.png

The latest fragrance by Sonia Rykiel is called Belle en Rykiel (Beautiful in Rykiel). It is described as an aromatic oriental and is based on a central accord of lavender and incense to bring in a touch of masculinity to an otherwise very feminine fragrance with gourmand undertones. The perfumer-composer behind the jus is Jean-Pierre Béthouart of Firmenich.

Although the perfume was created in 2006 and the release was announced last fall it has become available only now in France and will be released in other countries from April 2 2007....

Oranger En Fleurs by L'Artisan Parfumeur {New Perfume} {Scented Candle & Home Fragrance}

OrangerEnFleurs.jpg

L'Artisan Parfumeur is launching a new home fragrance line called Oranger En Fleurs (Orange Tree In Bloom). It is comprised of a large candle available for 40 Euros, a small one for 12 Euros, and a room spray for 45 Euros. The scent was created by perfumer-designer Karine Chevallier who is also the nose for the Nez à Nez line.

The new fragrance is described as a "A sunny, Mediterranean scent evoking ‘an orchard planted with Seville orange trees, surrounded by cactus and prickly pear’ and illustrating all the facets of the tree in bloom: ‘a green freshness; a honeyed, almost animal-like warmth, and the almondy sweetness of a Middle Eastern pastry'."

The candles are poured in newly-designed matte-black glass containers.
