Jil Sander Style, the original scent (2006), will see the addition of three flankers all at once offering three olfactory variations inspired and evoked by pastel colors. The new perfumes are called Blush Pink, Tender Green and Soft Yellow. They were all composed by Bernard Ellena of Symrise (he is incidentally the brother of famous Hermès in-house nose Jean Claude Ellena) and is also the creator of Jil Sander Style. The scents were co-created with nose Lucas Sieuzac...

Jessica Simpson Fancy is the singer's second foray into the world of fragrances following her dessert line of edible scents, which was based on a personal idea of hers. I do not remember exactly how I formed the subsequent notion, but I remember reading about that line in an interview given by Jessica Simpson and coming away with the impression that she must have been a gifted child and that these scents were an expression of her own idiosyncratic outlook on the world. This is to say that for the young singer and actress the confluence of perfume and food is there as one of the pathways built into her brain and as a personal interest of hers from early on. With Fancy, she did not waver from her initial interest, far from it. Despite the fact that the new fragrance is described officially as a floral oriental, it is at the same time very much a gourmand and a fruity-floral scent, done in a girly way. My preamble about Jessica's personal investment in the idea of what a fragrance can be is not to say that Fancy is an original perfume. In fact it is quite the contrary. It is very much in tune with a vein of perfumes that was especially exploited in the field of US celebs scents and which are built around a main self-indulgent sweet variation of fruit-salad-drizzled-over-with-cream, a very popular accord. The little difference we witness in this case is a slightly more grownup furry ambery facet reminiscent, however distantly, of classics such as Zibeline and Tabu. This vintage, retro touch, with a sprinkle of less-distant-in-time louder 1980s fashion-sense at times, has made a comeback recently in Guess by Marciano and others, and matches the style of the bottle...

eBay has had to fight several luxury brands and groups lately (Hermès, LVMH, Tiffany, l'Oréal) who accuse the auction site of enabling illegal practices and of de facto allowing the sales of counterfeit products. The biggest blow has come from a French court so far as, not surprisingly, France is known for being extremely protective of one of its leading economic sectors, luxury, and has a history of tough laws on counterfeits (see previous posts)...

The controversial Secret Obsession video: as you can see, it's all left up to your imagination (credit: You Tube)
In a gesture more symbolic than anything else, You Tube has decided to ban the controversial Eva Mendes video for Secret Obsession by Calvin Klein (see previous post) and thus unexpectedly chosen to follow the moral-majority lead of mainstream TV networks. But wait, this is what the Daily Dish - SF Gate reported about a few days ago and now the video is back on another page of You Tube or this is another copy that was left alone by community censors! God bless the human diversity of opinions; there is in fact a little war of the Secret Obsession ad going on! Someone pulls it out, someone else loads it up! Just be ready with your own video of Secret Obsession in case ammunitions start lacking...

Here is a very interesting article by Prof. Kamiel Koelman from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam which summarizes the position on perfume copyrights in Holland as based on the case of Trésor by Lancôme, which was examined by the courts in 2006. The paper raises a host of philosophical, biological, and legal questions and reveals the complexity of the issue. "The French cosmetics company, Lancôme, sells an exclusive perfume under the name Trésor (Treasure). Kecofa, a small Dutch firm, sells its Female Treasure perfume at a tenth of the price. Lancôme had previously tried to stop Kecofa by invoking its trademark right to the word Trésor,
but failed, because the courts found that consumers were unlikely to
confuse the brands. In 2000, after the Dutch Trademark act was
updated, Lancôme tried again, but this time also claimed infringement
of its copyright in the perfume. The trademark claim failed once more,
but - probably to Lancôme's surprise - the copyright claim succeeded
and was further sanctioned by the Dutch High Court.1 Coincidentally,
just three days before, the French Supreme Court had ruled that a
perfume - Dior's Dune - was not copyrightable. The French court likened
parfumeurs to mere craftsmen, like carpenters or plumbers, rather than
artists, and as such found their works not eligible for copyright
protection.2...

Once in a while you get to happen on a publicized picture of a perfumer holding his or her oeuvre. Most often treated as "éminences grises", men and women of the shadows in the recent past in order not to deflect attention from the brands, they now appear more frequently in the limelight. Here is a portrait of perfumer Carlos Benaïm presenting his latest perfume, Bulgari Jasmin Noir (he is also the author of the more widely known and wonderful Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds). You can see other pictures from the fragrance bash thrown for the new Bulgari scent here.
Aveda will launch a new signature perfume in November 2008 to celebrate its 30th anniversary called Ancient Attar Pure-Fume Spirit Aroma Spray. The scent takes its roots in the multi-secular tradition of South Asian perfumery while offering a contribution to the renascent field of natural perfumery, the latter a fact to be noted especially as coming from a global brand, "Inspired by the ancient art of Indian attar perfumes, Ancient Attar is
created with 100% botanical essential oils, including traditional attar
ingredients, rose and sandalwood, creating a modern, feminine aroma."
The perfume was created by in-house chief perfumer Ko-Ichi Shiozawa...

Desperate situations call for desperate means. After local inhabitants repeatedly complained about the suffocating stench emanating from nearby landfills in Mumbai (Bombay), India, the city government decided to remedy the bad odors with an herbal perfume. We know the relationship existing between perfume and hygiene, it can only be a temporary fix...

Please take note and mark your calendars! Here are some wonderful news! Donna Karan have decided to permanently reintroduce several of their iconic fragrances that had become nearly impossible to find and then only at astronomical prices. The new collection housed in similar flacons is simply titled Donna Karan The Fragrance Collection. Chaos won't be a ghost of the past anymore nor Donna Karan Signature nor Fuel for Men. If Black Cashmere and the Essence Collection ( Lavender, Jasmine, Labdanum, Wenge) are slightly less phantasmal, they too had become quite elusive...
