San Francisco based Aftelier Perfumes have launched a new perfume called Cuir de Gardenia, which was composed by perfumer Mandy Aftel, a pioneer figure in the independent natural perfumery movement in the United States and the teacher of many an American natural perfumer today...

She writes,

"Cuir de Gardenia retains the unique beauty of the tiare flower, not allowing it to morph into the hundreds of petals of a floral bouquet. One trembles in awe, metaphorically, when blending with the incomparably sumptuous tiare (gardenia) absolute. I had been incredibly fortunate to find an artisanal grower and distiller of the ultra-rare, costly, precious gardenia. In Cuir de Gardenia, I wanted to retain the pure loveliness of the creamy sweet and singular gardenia fragrance, and knew that the rounded warmth of an oil-based perfume (solid and extrait) would be the perfect format."

The fragrance includes an antique tincture of castoreum to create the leather/cuir note.

Fragrance notes are tiare (gardenia) absolute, jasmine grandiflorum absolute, benzyl acetate, castoreum, ethyl phenyl acetate, maltol.

"For the Holiday 2013 season, a limited-edition extrait version of Cuir de Gardenia is available in a mini 2 ml bottle ($55).

Cuir de Gardenia solid perfume comes in a one-quarter ounce sterling silver compact ($240), and in a one-quarter ml sample ($6) at www.aftelier.com. The rectangular hand-made Aftelier sterling silver compact was designed by Mandy Aftel. When empty, it can be returned to Aftelier Perfumes to be refilled."

Holidays sales run from the 6 to 8 December 2013.
