Jay Z, rapper, singer, husband of Beyoncé and dad to Blue Ivy, has launched his first cologne under his own signature name working together with Parlux. Previously, he had done fragrances under one of his companies' labels, apparel brand Rocawear, with Elizabeth Arden...

For this debut personal fragrance, Jay Z has chosen the material gold as his emblem. To him it means a number of important things,

"From the beginning of recorded history gold has been associated with royalty, purity and strength.

Gold is precious and valuable, a standard by which the value of other things are measured. As expressed in the gilded cap, GOLD JAY Z symbolizes SUCCESS, POWER, CONFIDENCE, COURAGE, STRENGTH and PRIDE.

Everything JAY Z touches turns to GOLD."

Masculine fragrances always talk about strength and power and such. Among African-American showbusiness honchos it's even more pronounced and political because they play a role as exempla wanting to show the way to others and emphasizing what a lesson their success is, standing against many odds. That is what people want to hear and that is what their life trajectories are a lot about.

The composition is signed by perfumer Ilias Ermenidis of Firmenich. It is dubbed a white aromatic fougère.  The eau de toilette is actually reportedly a misnomer as scent is concentrated at 18%. The brand kept this terminology as being more masculine as men's perfumes are more often than not eaux de toilette in duos comprising eaux de parfum for women. And then "cologne" is the term that a man born and bred in America might feel most comfortable with. Otherwise he might feel like he's wearing bras, or something of that order.

Gold for Men by Jay Z opens on top notes of ginger, grapefruit, blueberry and cardamom leading to a heart of vetiver, pink peppercorn, lavender and violet leaves and deepening with notes of amber, teak wood, vanilla and myrrh.

Launch premieres at Barney's New York on November 20, 2013 before a national rollout at the end of the month.
