Well, if you've watched Mulholland Drive by David Lynch which speaks for all the people to whom the chance encounter did not happen or was not enough (or too much, depending on how you view the issue), you know it's more complicated than that.

If you've read some of the tabloid articles on John Travolta and how he made it in Hollywood, you also gather that sometimes there are people you wished you had never met.
