German Duftstars Awards For Best Perfumes 2007 {Fragrance News}
The German Duftstars 2007 have been awarded. There were 40 finalists in 8 different categories. Looking at the list, one realizes that there was one category that was particularly fraught with competition that is, the one including older time-tested classics like Angel, Arpège, 1000, and Opium......
One can ask what the meaning of that exercise is? Do these perfumes need to be promoted, re-examined, better understood? What does it mean to compare them between themselves as the "best classics" versus being the best ones in a particular olfactory family category? Especially so since the notion of being a "classic" is in part based on enduring popular appeal, something independent of the jury's opinions. For example, Edmond Roudnitska thought that Chanel no 5 was a classic in a commercial sense, rather than in an artistic sense. A "classic" on the other hand can be defined as a leader in its own personal perfumery category. It seems that whole chapters of perfume history had to be sacrificed in order to make the category work. One cannot help but think that this category is meaningless. Fortunately, we can still continue to wear the ones that did not get the prize or were even nominated!
