Diagram: The Costs of Launching A New Perfume {Perfume History & Facts} {Scented Image}

On March 14 2006, the Committee on Competition condemned 13 fragrance and luxury brands (Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, L'Oréal, Yves Saint Laurent etc.) and three national distributors (Marionnaud, Sephora, and Nocibé) to an indemnity of 46, 2 millions of Euros for having agreed between 1997 and 2000 on recommended minimum retail prices in order to protect their luxury image. Smaller distributors were apparently forced to comply too. Both the commercial code and European legislation prohibit this type of practice. The magazine Challenges published a diagram that shows the average costs of launching a 100 ml eau de toilette in the mainstream market.......

Reflection Pour Femme & Reflection Pour Homme by Amouage {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Perfumes}

Reflection_Bottles.jpg

Reflection Pour Femme and Reflection Pour Homme are the latest creations by Amouage, a perfume house well-known for its image of luxury and the exceptional quality of their products. The Amouage perfumes seem to consistently offer a certain idea of polished cosmopolitan urbane and classic luxury but contrasted at the same time with the slightly unruly naturalness stemming from the sense of excess found in the opulence of their fragrance compositions. Luxury as an ideal of quality of life and luxury as lived experience are adequately expressed together, not one feeling lagging behind the other as can happen sometimes (See Fleur du Mâle).

The fragrances made by Amouage offer a very sophisticated style yet also seem very close to the natural world, the latter aspect to the point where one is ready to ascribe an aromatherapeutic value to them. The scents add not just an element of olfactory beauty during one's day, as other perfumes do, but at night, they reveal an unknown nocturnal influence in their capacity to make one dream the most harmonious dreams. In this manner, they seem to unconsciously promote a sense of peace as they balance out one's oniric universe (frankincense?)......

Notes on L'Ombre Fauve & Ether de Lilas by Parfumerie Générale {Perfume Short (Review)}

I wanted to let you know that after having ordered not only Ether de Lilas, but also L'Ombre Fauve which I had already reviewed, I have come to the conclusion that there are different batches of these perfumes in circulation. At least I am quite positive about that regarding L'Ombre Fauve. The latter from my new sampling session smells much more chemical and lacks the qualities I had described in my review of it. I suspect it has to do with a lack of maturation because Ether de Lilas presents the same strong chemical overtone, to the point where it hurts one's nose to smell them.

New Nearly Scentless Durian, Left-Handed & Right-Handed Molecules, Masculine Florals, Jeanne D'Arc's Relics Smelled of Vanillin, Religious Perfume Marketing {The 5th Sense in the News}

durian.jpg

The New York Times has an article about a new breed of durian, an equatorial and tropical fruit surrounded by folklore that is famous for its pungent smell and uber-creamy texture. The breeders of the new variety have apparently succeeded in toning down its distinctive aroma. Once you get used to the old-style durian, it's delicious.
