Photo © Chanel Chanel will add an eleventh fragrance to its collection of "niche" perfumes titled Les Exclusifs which debuted last year with both classic Chanels and six new creations: Bel Respiro, 28 La Pausa, No 18, Coromandel, Eau de Cologne, and 31, Rue Cambon. The new perfume by in-house perfumer-composers Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake is called Sycomore after an earlier Chanel fragrance from 1930. The fragrances belonging to Les Exclusifs collection generally feature more select ingredients that are easier to source at a smaller scale, more intellectual compositions, and to further distinguish them from the more mainstream Chanels are only distributed through the brand's boutiques......

The Lure of Argan Oil by Guest Contributor Pauline
Surfing on the Argan oil’s wave, Naturelle d’Argan is an organic and ethical skin care range, which uses the highly regenerative oil of Moroccan origin that nourishes, protects and moisturizes the skin.
The 100% organic argan oil is reported to contain over 20 nutrients for the skin, such as Omega 6 and Omega 9, vitamin E and Polyphenol, which are powerful anti-oxidants. Berber women, who have traditionally been in charge of the hand picked harvests of Argan nuts, use this anti-aging oil for their beauty rituals (body, hair and nails).
The Naturelle d’Argan range comprises 4 face and 3 body skin cares, including an original exfoliating cleansing gel made of finely ground Argan seeds and apricot kernel. The Argan oil, called “Pure Argan Elixir,” is labelled “Cosmebio”, which guarantees the use of a minimum of 95% of natural ingredients and 10% of bio ingredients. It is Paraben-free, Silicone-free and GMO-free ingredients. The oil can be used for face, body and hair-care.....

The USA Fragrance Foundation have announced their top 10 finalists for the Fifi Awards 2008 in different market categories for men and women as a prelude to the official ceremony to take place on April 25th, 2008. The top 5 finalists will be announced in their turn at the Finalists Breakfast together with editorial prizes that are curiously, mind you, divided by gender for two of them, probably due to a market imperative but not a cultural one. The final award ceremony takes place on May 20th, 2008.
"...in anticipation of the exclusive FiFi Finalists Breakfast to be held for Fragrance Foundation members on Friday, April 25th, 2008 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The FiFi Finalists Breakfast is the kick off event of the FiFi Awards season when the beauty industry learns who will be recognized as the top five finalists of each of the award categories at the 36th Annual FiFi® Awards & Celebration. The FiFi Awards is an annual event to honor the fragrance industry’s creative achievements and is considered the “Oscars” of the global fragrance industry."
Here follows the list of top 10 finalists in the order presented by the Fragrance Foundation. There are ties while by contrast the mass-market categories are under-populated: WOMEN’S LUXE: (11 finalists due to a tie)
• Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche - Chanel • Coach - BeautyBank • Daisy Marc Jacobs – Coty Prestige • DKNY Delicious Night Eau de Parfum – Donna Karan Cosmetics • Dolce & Gabbana the one – P&G Prestige Products, Inc. • Emporio Armani Diamonds – Giorgio Armani Parfums • Kelly Calèche - Hermès • M by Mariah Carey – Elizabeth Arden • Nina by Nina Ricci – Puig Beauty & Fashion Group • Ralph Rocks by Ralph Lauren – Ralph Lauren Fragrances • Usher She – Liz Claiborne Cosmetics

Montreal-based Canadian brand Lise Watier is launching a new women's fragrance this month called Désirable. It is described as a woody fruity-floral offering a fresh sensual personality. Lise Watier, established in 1972, entered the fragrance market in 1996 with a debut perfume called Neiges which was a resounding success.
Désirable was composed by perfumer Jean-Marc Chaillan of IFF, co-author of Euphoria for Men (with Loc Dong) and CK IN2U for Him (with Bruno Jovanovic) among others. He is the son of perfumer Raymond Chaillan.....

Estee Lauder announced that they will introduce a new feminine fragrance in July of 2008 called Sensuous. The launch is part of a strategic move to renew the brand's perfume portfolio while being in touch with their own tradition of rich ambers inaugurated with Youth-Dew and apparent in Aliage, Azurée, Youth-Dew Amber Nude (recently discontinued). The new perfume will thus steer clear of their dominant floral category and move into more opulent amber-y and woody territory as woods are becoming increasingly popular in North America and represent an important potential for growth in Europe.....

Following the developments of higher profile fragrances in collaboration with luxury designers Christian Lacroix for Rouge and Noir and Cynthia Rowley for Flower and Petal, Avon will now offer a new duo of perfumes created in partnership with couturier Emmanuel Ungaro from August of 2008. The fragrances are called Ungaro U for Her and U for Him, not to be confused with last year's Ungaro by Ungaro fragrance bottled in a U-shaped flacon.....

Nice ad for the latest Juicy Couture jus, Dirty English (Musky English). It is grungy (paper looks a little like butcher's oily wrapping paper), vintage tattoo-ish, a bit punk (the hair) and you just can imagine this man sitting next to an old conservative Englishman on the subway in London for good old British contrasting effect.
Emilio Pucci released a 10 ml purse roll-on for Vivara (2007). The packaging was created by designer Helle Damkjaer who also conceived the original bottle for the perfume. The perfume is now carried by a light gel with polymers which are said to optimize the diffusion of green and floral notes during the day.....

biehl. parfumkunstwerke is a cosmopolitan German Hamburg-based perfume house with roots in New York city which was created last year by veteran fragrance developer Thorsten Biehl who is also the son of perfumer Henning Biehl. The motto of the new perfume house is "Perfume art. Nothing else". In keeping with this demanding purist approach, the collection of 13 inaugural perfumes were designed by 6 perfumers who were given maximum creative freedom by Thorsten Biehl acting like a perfume editor in the vein of Frederic Malle (see next an interview released by the house with perfumer Egon Oelkers who offers insights into the process).....

In this informative in-house interview conducted by biehl. parfumkunstwerke, we learn about the process of creation of the house's perfumes in the words of Egon Oelkers. He is also a senior perfumer at Symrise and head of their new perfumery training program (cf. Perfumer & Flavorist). He composed eo01, eo02, and eo03 for the brand.
“Every perfumer dreams of a chance like this.” Egon Oelkers about his cooperation with Thorsten Biehl and his own Parfumkunstwerke.
How did the cooperation with Thorsten Biehl come about?
That’s an old connection. I know Thorsten Biehl from his time with the fragrance producer Symrise, where he was working in marketing and sales. I also worked closely for a long time with his father, perfumer Henning Biehl. When roughly a year ago Thorsten Biehl launched biehl. parfumkunstwerke, he asked me if I would like to develop three personal fragrances for him – and naturally I assented.
How did your fragrances eo01, eo02 and eo03 emerge?
The only instruction I had from Thorsten Biehl ran: “You are completely free, be creative – and compose a fragrance that is very quality, far surpassing mass taste.” I was truly given no conditions at all on either theme or price. Thorsten Biehl’s sole wish was that I should create a voluminous, heavy fragrance, i.e. not one with light, fresh summer notes, but rather one in an Oriental direction. This free, independent work corresponded very well with my ideas of perfumery. I prefer to work with such natural products as woods, spices and blossoms. It is hard to create these fragrance notes with synthetic substances, and so they are usually very costly. For my creations for Thorsten Biehl, I was able to use a high proportion of such natural products and thus create very spicy, woody fragrances. For me it is important that fragrances should not become too overpowering or narcotic, as can easily be the case with animal components. For all their abundance and richness, they should nevertheless remain transparent.......

Pure White Linen Light Breeze inscribes itself in the direct genealogy of White Linen (1978), which had a Breeze version as early as 1996 and was adapted to contemporary tastes with Pure White Linen in 2006. Like each year, Estee Lauder put out their summer collection of fragrances, which are usually made to smell of-the-season with the addition of fresh notes and dressed in pretty shades and patterns to accent the mood of relaxation. So this year there is also a Pure White Linen Summer Fun. This review is for Light Breeze only which was issued in the beginning of 2008 to herald the early days of spring. By now our representations of what crisp linen smell like - and an immaculately white linen at that - has been heavily codified by a whole school of perfumes that aims to capture the quintessence of clean. Given this constraint and given the simple purposes of such fragrances, it is tricky to assess them beyond the fact that they appropriately seem to deliver the promise of an eternal youth for your white t-shirt. With this type of perfume on, your t-shirt will never age, wrinkle, nor smell bad. No, the Ozonic smell takes over and imparts a permanent jus-showered effect that even clean little babies can only dream of......

Coty will release a new limited edition fragrance as part of the David Beckham Instinct franchise inaugurated in 2005. The new scent is called Instinct After Dark, "Intinct After Dark, according to various report, opens with sparkling, tangy-fresh citrus notes of grapefruit, Italian bergamot and mandarin leaf. The middle note is pure elegance with pimento, star anise and cardamom, culminating in the magnetic sensuality of vanilla and white amber."....

According to the March 2008 issue of Wallpaper (print edition), the house of Creed will release a sequel to Love in White called Love in Black. The perfume is still in its development stages and involves Erwin Creed as well as Olivier Creed. Erwin Creed candidly admits to not having such a great nose but - not to worry regarding the destiny of the house of Creed - to be able to compensate this failing with his creativity: "I'm not the best nose. But I have good ideas." [...] "Chanel No.5 was the result of a mistake, after all....And I have good taste." (Image: The Bride Wore Black by François Truffaut) This information is included in an article about three pairs of fathers and sons who are all perfumers: the Creeds, Max and Clément Gavarry, Olivier and Jacques Polge. The perfume world is known to be steeped in tradition and family transmission still plays a significant role in it. But things are evolving thanks in part to schools like ISIPCA.....

Coty Emeraude - 1965 advert "For litte girls [and little boys] who have been good all year" (TSS collection)
Dear Readers, Today is The Scented Salamander's 2nd anniversary! Since the beginning of this site, millions of visitors have showed interest in one aspect or another of today's perfume and beauty culture by coming to visit this blog and news site. We have been cited by the websites of the Washington Post, The Toronto Star, New York Times,The Independent, The Student Organized Press...This is pretty cool considering perfume and aromas in general are such a niche topic. We don't even receive too many hate comments or mail although someone recently shouted on a board that M-H should be gunned down for her review of Five O'Clock Au Gingembre. Wonderful! Perfume can be an engrossing topic after all. It is probably a failing on our part that we do not get more of these passionate comments.
A big, big thank you!
The 17th of March is also Saint Patrick's Day, so happy B-day to Saint Paddy! Perfume trivia bit: it is also Alexander McQueen's birthday and on this day in 2003 the perfume Kingdom was launched to celebrate it. Happy B-day to both! We also wanted to let you know that TSS has been nominated for the Glam Awards in the Beauty category. The Glam Media network has expanded from around 200 publishers at the time we joined to 450 or so now. Glam will now further develop as they just raised $85 million in private strategic financing. If you like the work we do on this site, find it useful in any ways, please vote for us until April 10th, 2008! If you really like our site and want to encourage us even more you can vote for us every day! Each person is allowed to vote once every 24 hours here: http://www.glam.com/2008networkawards/ TSS was also nominated for the Fabbies Awards in the Beauty category back in January. You can still vote for us - only once however until April 31st, 2008 - here: http://www.fabbies.org/ -- you land on the main page and then find us in "Beauty". You also need to register. The site, I have to say, looks a little neglected. Too bad not all the nominated publishers advertised these awards in particular (although they are interested since they sent in their logos)!
Huge thank yous for everything, XoXo, The Scented Salamander team To show our gratitude, please let us know what perfumes or products you would like us to review in priority and we will do our best to cover them in the future.
