Réminiscence DoRé, MiFa in Les Notes Gourmandes (2008) {New Fragrances}

Henry Cavill Promotes Dunhill London & The Color of His Eyes {Fragrance News} {Scented Images}

'Tis a bit late, but here are some pictures of the dashing Henry Cavill at the launch of the new cologne for men, Dunhill London. We reported previously about the fragrance here.

Interestingly, the blue of the advert and the juice in the bottle matches exactly the color of Cavill's eyes. This is what you call precision work on the perfume and celebrity image synergy....

Dear Readers,

After having devoted some time to the Rose-Challenge Series, we will go back to covering more the recent fragrance releases. The Rose Challenge however becomes the Rose Notebook. We will keep adding articles related to roses from time to time in the future.

A Violet Notebook is in the works.

More immediately, we are also going to do a Bath & Body series on Great Soaps of the World that will run parallel to perfume reviews.

The rest is a surprise!

Jennifer Lopez Deseo (2008) {Perfume Review} {New Fragrance} {Celebrity Fragrance}

A Garden By The Beach & The American Dream

In the often decried world of celebrity fragrances, Jennifer Lopez has managed to be both a 21st century trend-setter and standard-bearer of good quality mass-marketed perfumes that aim to please without being condescending to the masses. Balance, prettiness, even beauty, and quality ingredients can be expected from her brand. Deseo continues to keep these values active.

Deseo in terms of semiotics or image is a significant departure from the rest of the Jennifer Lopez franchise as its packaging is unique to the brand, seems to break loose with the amphora-inspired flacons, and the name, for the first time, pays homage to JLo's Hispanic heritage. The bottle was designed by JLo herself together with the Coty Prestige team. Deseo means "desire, wish, dream" or "I desire".

From the name to the shape of the flacon, Deseo positions itself as an aspirational perfume. While it is more usual to see aspirational fragrances for the individual, Deseo is clearly an aspirational perfume designed for a whole community, the Hispanic one, with possible identification for the rest of the potential customers through representations of social mobility, general experience of immigration, or the luster associated with celebrity glamour....

Ralph Lauren Ralph Wild (2007) {Perfume Review in a Nutshell}

As previously announced, Ralph Lauren added a new scent to their franchise towards the very end of 2007 with Ralph Wild. The image of the scent is young, hippyish, and revivalist 1970s. The perfume itself is uncomplicated but not too schematic. It is like a teen, laid-back, and Americanized (linear, fresh, unfussy) version of Miss Dior Chérie.

The perfume is a thick, nectar-like fruity-floral, which balances out well the sweet and tart facets of strawberry avoiding the common pitfall of bland candied notes. Its nectar-like texture evokes the feeling of a potion and the potential transfigurative powers of such scents; it is always interesting to observe how a "thick" jammy scent will evolve on the skin as it cannot remain as concentrated as in the bottle.

If you like fresh strawberry jam and always fantasized about being able to replicate its smell on skin, this is as good as it gets. It smells like a jar of Bonne Maman strawberry jam. It is both yummy and sexy.....

Morgan My Morgan (2008) {New Fragrance}

Morgan will introduce a new perfume in March of 2008 called My Morgan. It is the fifth fragrance for the fashion brand which has already issued Morgan De Toi, Light My Heart, Love Love De Toi, and Sweet Paradise. The two last ones were particularly successful according to Abc-luxe.

The scent is described as a tropical fruity-floral with gourmand and sweet accents. It was created by Laurent Bruyère and Dominique Ropion of IFF.

The perfume will be available for 23 € and 46 €.

Demeter Incense (2008) {New Fragrance}

Demeter Fragrance Library is releasing a new scent called Incense based on Copal.

It is described as a "warm, deep, rich blend of exotic notes. It is inviting and enveloping, the kind of scent that is both simple and complex at the same time. There is no effort needed to appreciate it, yet every time you experience Incense from Demeter you will find new depth and nuance."

Erykah Badu To Be Face of New Tom Ford Fragrance {Fragrance News} {Celebrity Perfume}

Singer Erykah Badu is reported to have been elected by Tom Ford to be the face of an as-of-yet-unnamed upcoming fragrance of his. The Grammy Award winning singer is known for her outspoken political views and sense of fashion earlier in her career. She now has a charity organization called Beautiful Love.

This move reported by Vogue UK, seems to confirm that niche perfume brands are as interested as luxury brands in perking up their images with celebrities. It also shows how they tap into a pool of celebrities that correspond to their edgier images.
