Stéphanie de Saint-Aignan has announced that four new fragrances are to come as part of her 2008 collection. On a personal note she explains that she recently gave birth to a little boy named Sacha and that she hopes to be able to reach all of her self-assigned goals despite the charming and engrossing presence of her new bundle of love. Berbériades Extrême is described as an intense version of Berbériades to which she added cinnamon and vanilla.....

The 1996 ad for Aimez-Moi "Love Me - this is just the name of my perfume" from Couleur de Parfum Aimez-Moi by Caron, created by perfumer Dominique Ropion, was first introduced in 1996 and relaunched later in a different packaging (the peppercorn one). It is reported to be a modern adaptation of N'Aimez Que Moi also by the same house, a rose (and sandalwood) perfume that was created in 1917 to coincide with the beginning of World War I and the then felt need to release a memento perfume, one that would be offered as a sign of sworn faithfulness between lovers on the eve of a fateful separation for many. In fact, linking emotions released by perfume with the alleviation of war suffering was an idea that was pursued by Guerlain as well with L’Heure Bleue at around the same time. It was at one point dispatched to soldiers on the front to scent their handkerchiefs and remind them of home and civilization in the midst of barbarity. Who ever said that perfume was superficial and for laughs? It epitomizes civilization, the good and the beautiful even and especially when hope is nearly lost. If the 1918 perfume said in English “Love Only Me”, 78 years later, the message is less dramatic, just intimating a quieter but no less self-assured, “Love Me”......

Guerlain is preparing to introduce a limited-edition of its classic men's fragrance equally beloved by women, Habit Rouge (1965), called Habit de Métal (Metallic Frock). It is not altogether clear whether the jus itself was changed, but the mention of a note of "wild leather" in the base notes seems to indicate that it was updated to include more recently crafted fragrance molecules.....

"Olfaction is a kind of taste experienced at a distance. Others are forced, willy-nilly, to participate in this pleasure. And this is why, being in contradiction with freedom, olfaction is less social than taste, where among many dishes or bottles a guest can choose one that he likes without others being forced to share the pleasure of it. Cabaret by Grès was launched in 2002 but did not have the impact it deserved and rather quickly joined the ranks of discounted perfumes. Why did this happen? Instead of being a fragrance much cared about, it is one that one can call "underrated". Without having studied this case, one can assume that a relatively modest budget launch, the fact that it was a chypre creation when chypres were not yet on the rebound, and its mature, distinguished, elegant, somewhat austere, and refined personality all have contributed to some extent to its lack of broad popular appeal.
The advert did read "Cherchez la femme" (look for the woman) and apparently it landed in a market crowded with girls.
The perfume was composed by Michel Almairac. It is a beautifully balanced classic chypre and in it the rose note is never opulent but rather transparent, sparkling, and dry, fusing together with the near-austere spirit of chypre instead of affirming her floralcy. The rose here tinges the perfume and is very delicate making you think of a dry sparkling rosé wine without any literal boozy connotations....
3 iconic cabaret women characters. In the perfume "Cabaret" the cabaret fantasy remains internalized. We have to note that when we think of Lisa Minnelli's character wearing this perfume, the patchouli facet becomes more aggressive and comes to the fore. When we think of the Blue Angel, the perfume becomes rosier. And when we see Satine wearing it, it becomes more powdery. (Images: IMDB)

Comptoir Sud Pacifique have two new vanilla twists to offer in their collection of gourmand fragrances. This time the vanilla is associated with coffee in Vanille Mokha, a limited edition, and coconut in Vanille Coco. The latter addition might sound a bit confusing since there is already a Coco Extrême (you are likely to spot it at Marshall's these days), but the notes do differ, on paper at least....

A 1982 ad for Nahema by Guerlain Happy Valentine's Day! May your day be filled with petals of roses!
New-Jersey based historic company Lanman & Kemp-Barclay & Co., makers of Florida Water have chosen the day of their 200th anniversary to announce that they will release two new perfumes this year meant to position them in a new segment of the market, the luxury one. One of the two planned releases is a men's cologne called 1808 named after the date of their establishment coinciding also with the introduction of Florida Water. The other is a feminine jus called Restless. Both will be priced around $50, sold in department stores, and "compete with name brands such as Intuition for men by Estée Lauder and Calvin Klein's Obsession."....

There is an interview with Richard Stamelman author of Perfume: Joy, Obsession, Scandal, Sin, on the Vermont Public Radio on "All Things Considered". You can click here to access the talk. Two quick comments - 1) I don't think that he can generalize and say that before the 1880s there were only single-note floral fragrances....

Fashion design label Lilly Pulitzer, which celebrates the Florida lifestyle with bold prints and colors is preparing to enter the fragrance business this year. They will start by proposing a wardrobe of scents rather than a unique signature perfume. Fragrances will be developed by Pulse Points LLC. which created the Leiber perfume last year. The brand stress that they "come from a juice stand" in the late 1950s and that they are all about bright, happy colors, which will be reflected in the products.

Since Arpège, which was the gift of love from Jeanne Lanvin to her daughter Marie-Blanche on her 30th birthday, the idea of expressing mother-and-daughter love in perfumes has taken some root if not predominance. It was also expressed more recently in a duo of fragrances by Clarins, Par Amour and Par Amour Toujours. Bulgari had opted to affirm maternal love towards children of both sexes with Mamans et Petits. Now Cynthia Rowley will launch, in partnership with Avon, another mother-daughter duet with Flower (mother) and Petal (daughter). They can be layered or worn independently.
The packaging is adorable, very Paris-Apartment and shabby chic. Both perfumes were composed by Richard Herpin and Frank Völkl....

We now have more details about the upcoming launch by Bond No. 9. Bond No. 9, after Andy Warhol Silver Factory (2007), will release their second Warhol-inspired scent with Andy Warhol Union Square on March 1st 2008. The New-York based perfumery promises to deliver unusual olfactory sensations this spring with the creation of this green floral perfume, as "sweetness" and "coolness" intertwine and merge, "While most floral fragrances just hint at cool, and vice versa, this one is an ambi-sexual, daringly balanced mix of sweet and cool. Sometimes the gentle scent of lily of the valley seems about to prevail, looped together with blue freesia, golden amber, and animal musk to enhance its sensuality. At other times, crunchy green-stem notes and white birch wood are poised to turn this scent into one of pure, clean energy. But then the sweetness and the coolness merge, and stay merged.".....
