Tom Ford's Fragrance Chamber {Scented Image} {The 5th Sense in the News}

FragranceChamber_TomFord.jpg

The New York Times has an article on the new Tom Ford flagship store. Horacio Silva recounts the charming welcome he received from the employees of the store. So much so that he does not hesitate to write:.......

Dior Homme Cologne & Eau Sauvage Fraîcheur Cuir by Dior {New Perfumes}

EauSauvageFraîcheurCuir.gif

Dior is launching two new variations of previous masculine fragrances from their catalogue, Dior Homme and Eau Sauvage. To make their new perfumes sound more distinctive in the very crowded field of seasonal spring/summer releases, they have used the theme of a perfume family genre for each scent rather than just presenting them as summer variations......

Mustang for Men by Estée Lauder Cos. & Ford Motor Co. {New Perfume}

MustangforMen.jpg

Estée Lauder and Ford Motor have joined forces to bring a new men's fragrance to the market, which will be simply called Mustang after the car. The new scent is meant "...to appeal to ‘retrosexuals' — a guy's guy, the opposite of a metrosexual. This isn't a car fragrance. It's a lifestyle brand.".......

Passion Brésil by Esteban {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Perfume}

PassionBrésil.jpg

Passion Brésil is the latest fragrance by Esteban in the Le Bain collection geared towards the pleasures of scented bathing rituals. It has top notes of bergamot and yellow fruits.  Heart notes are coffee blossom, violet, and rose. Base notes are soft woods and musk.

The perfume starts with a pronounced fruity accord on an amberey base with some initial nuances of fermented alcohol and nail polish. As the scent progresses it becomes more green and flowery. So far, the nose is not especially stimulated by the recognition of a rather standard fruity-floral concoction. There is a just a hint of something less pretty that is a little rough hewn and raw, which smells more intriguing and promising. The jus deepens, feels a bit more complex with warm resinous and woody accents......

The Career of YSL Opium, An Interview of Perfumer Mathilde Laurent, Rose in Perfumery {The 5fth Sense in the News}

Opium.png

L'Express magazine regularly features articles on perfumes and perfumery (in French). I am catching up and calling your attention to these three last pieces:

Guillaume Crouzet writes about Opium by Yves Saint Laurent. 30 years later it is still alive and kicking. There is a diaporama you can leaf through during which you can also listen to a poem written by YSL.

Les Trente "Glorieuses" d'Opium........

Paris, Cinéma, & Opium Love Sprays by Yves Saint Laurent {Fragrance News}

LoveSprays_YSL.jpg

Yves Saint Laurent is proposing to transform perfume bottles into fashion accessories to be worn attached to one's bag or belt, for example. For the limited edition series of Paris, Cinéma, and Opium in Love Sprays, they have bottled up the classic scents in 25 ml perfume flacons that are made portable thanks to silk ribbons attached to the heart-shaped phials. The heart is a favorite symbol of YSL's.

Paris Love Spray retails for 40 Euros, Cinéma Love Spray for 42 Euros, and Opium Love Spray for 47 Euros.

Don't Get Me Wrong Baby, I Don't Swallow by Etat Libre D'Orange {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Perfume}

to-catch-a-thief.jpg
DontGetMeWrong.png

By now, the Parisian niche perfume house founded by Etienne de Swardt, Etat Libre D'Orange, have become infamous for their love of dubious plays on words (very French!, the playful part, not the dubious part necessarily) and their carabin* type of  humor. In fact, the most provocative aspect of all this enterprise does not lie in the unbridled, slightly feverish - in appearance at least - imagination displayed in the stories around the perfumes, but rather in the discrepancies (except for Sécrétions Magnifiques) between the story lines, the names, and the scents themselves. If the copy of Don't Get Me Wrong Baby, I Don't Swallow is a feat in Kitsch writing and assemblage of cheesy lines that is voluntarily cultivated, the fragrance itself is one of the loveliest muguet scents one could hope for in this "world of brutes" as we say jokingly in French to emphasize the welcome appeal of something soft and gentle.......

Kai Fragrance Oil & Kai Eau de Parfum {Perfume Short (Reviews)}

Kai_Oil.jpg

Kai Fragrance Oil was created by brand owner Gaye Straza Rappaport in 2000. Since then it has achieved a kind of cult status. The scent has reportedly been adopted by many stars from the performance industry, ranging from Reese Witherspoon and Pamela Anderson to Tommy Lee. Looking at the press on the Kai website and remembering other names like that of Julia Roberts, it appears to be easier to ask the question: who in Hollywood did not wear Kai at one point in their lives? Hollywood celebrities seem to love simple, yet sexy skin scents, and this is one of them.

All joking aside, I felt I needed to test the scent as it is still ubiquitous and also in order to report on the differences between the fragrance oil and the newer eau de parfum version, a little puzzling question that arises regularly on forums. Rappaport explained to Elle that coming up with a new alcohol-based version took some work and effort and was motivated by their cutomers' requests "But it took three years since mists tend to be lighter than oils and I wanted to preserve the integrity of the original."........

3121 by Prince {New Perfume} {Celebrity Fragrance}

Prince_3121.png

Singer Prince will release his own perfume this summer on 07.07.07. It is called 3121 after his last album and is described as a "kaleidoscope of rich florals". A website has been set up to showcase the upcoming scent.

One can spot two trends here, the celebrity one and, apparently, the big floral one.

Added: you can read our review of the perfume here

An Upcoming Coleen McLoughlin Perfume For This Summer {Fragrance News} {Celebrity Perfume}

Coleen_McLoughlin.jpg

Another celebrity fragrance is in the making. This time it will promote the image of Coleen McLoughlin, the fiancée of British footballer Wayne Rooney. I am pretending I am familiar with them, but I just learned about their existences today. The celebrity perfume marketing is already working its magic.

What Coleen McLoughlin says about the making of the perfume is revelatory of a sped-up perfume creation process it seems. A little visit to Grasse et voilà!.......

A New Bespoke Service Offered by Floris of London {Fragrance News}

Floris.jpg

Floris of London, sometimes presented as the oldest existing perfume house in the world as it was founded in 1730, is now proposing a new besposke service in response to the perceived revival of the luxury market (we can be optimistic about that)........

Scented Quote of the Day, From Serge Lutens & {Fragrant Readings} Interviews of Serge Lutens, Mathilde Laurent, & Dennis Papithis

SL_Bottle.png

Yaffa Assouline asks: What is perfume to you?

Serge Lutens: One doesn't make perfume uniquely from raw materials. A perfume is a composition of the mind, it's a personal experience, unexpected. It's not created in accord with society - it should be something that expresses a different view......

Kenzoki Ice-Cubes by Kenzo {New Perfume}

Kenzoki.gif

Kenzo has come up with the interesting proposition of freezing one's perfume so as to generate new sensations on the skin when applying it. If you were already in the habit of doing this with your skin lotion, that may not sound as revolutionary, but as far as marketed  perfumes are concerned, it is a first........
