This must be our first entry of an Axe fragrance in the new-perfumes category although we have covered them before as part of the teenage-scents body-spray phenomenon and due to their creative ads (and also meant to review a couple of those). This time Axe is taking a slightly different route to seduce men into wearing a fragrance that will be a chick-magnet, and interestingly for this type of very conservative, boyish scents, it is taking the path of the gourmand fragrance, and a muy caliente one at that. Called Dark Temptation the new scent is advertised with the tag line ". ..as irresistible as chocolate." "AXE Dark Temptation is the new fragrance by AXE inspired by what women love most...chocolate.
"AXE Dark Temptation combines the subtle aroma of chocolate with fresh
gourmet scents, including hot chocolate amber and red peppercorn, to
bring modern sophistication to this distinctive fragrance.
So go ahead, try New AXE Dark Temptation and become as irresistible as chocolate!"...

Life is paradoxical. After coming up with my list of sexiest men's fragrances in 10 minutes or so, it took me several days to be able to focus again on publishing it. Meanwhile, I wrote about why my list was not ready for publication yet some ideas around why a man needs a woman to help him choose those steamy scents in Part 1. I toyed with the idea of adding a couple of perfumes but decided to stick to the original list after re-smelling Jules by Dior, a once-very-sexy scent for me that seems to have lost that character. And If I did not think about it immediately, I suppose it means that it did not leave such a mark on my psyche. So, here is my list composed on an instinctual level. If I happen on other particularly sexy scents for men, I will make sure to add a part 3, part 4 etc.... Different Kinds of Sexy: • Plain Sexy: Kenzo Jungle pour Homme. I don't know exactly how it manages to do that and I don't really want to know, but it's a scent that readily plants a masculine atmosphere of woods and a sensual aura of virility. Not all woods are very masculine, you realize, some just smell like the timber with which lumberjacks are associated. With Kenzo Jungle pour Homme, there is like a masculine holographic presence materializing at your side, the palpable ghost of a man. It smells like the effect of "a boyfriend's tee-shirt." • Sexy-Sweaty (Sexy-Hot): Eau d'Hermès. The scent of a lupanar sold by a very chic house so it's okay and your good taste and good morality won't be questioned. I still can't believe my nose that such an indecent perfume is available on the market and not even safely tucked away in a niche perfumery brand. As soon as you wear it, you will feel as if all your clothes had fallen at your feet and you are tripping on rumpled bedsheets. The key note of cumin gives it a very frank sweaty and naughty vibe...

A Grotesque Old Woman by Quentin Metsys
According to Datamonitor, the seniors represent the next segment of the market to conquer especially where fragrances are concerned as they reportedly develop a body odor that signals their age and contributes to making them look...their real age to others, i.e., old. Anti-age scents oriented for seniors care would be able to make them smell younger. Some people will think it's just a new gimmick set up to create new anxieties and make you shell out money to assuage them. My only problem with this view is that I would be hard-pressed to pinpoint an universal old-people smell like I could for that of a flower (with some nuances). When you walk on the street, do you get particular wafts?
"Skin care is already a strong category for the demographic,
particularly anti-aging, but other sectors including hair care are less
well developed.
But according to Datamonitor's Matthew Adams, it is the fragrance and deodorant categories that hold good growth potential among the older generation.
"Researchers in Japan have identified why we begin to develop a
different natural personal scent as we age and this could lead to all
sorts of new products to make people smell and feel both younger and
more confident," he told CosmeticsDesign."...

As announced previously, Lanvin is counting on the celebrity-recognition effect of world champion Rafael Nadal to promote their new men's scent called L'Homme Sport by Lanvin. It can be hard sometimes for consumers to orient themselves in the maze of L'Homme and Sport-tagged masculine fragrances so it is almost an obligatory step for companies to choose a unique differentiating element in their advertisements, at least....

L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent was released in 2006 and has become a bestseller. It is ranked as the 6th most sold men's fragrance in France. The jus benefited from ample advertising budgets as well as the contributions of actor Olivier Martinez as the celebrity face of the scent. The talent of architect Jean Nouvel was added to the mix for a limited-edition bottle shaped as a homage to the male member (officially it is a test tube on a base). The tapping into the nuts-bolts-and-screws imagery obviously was a hit in general, with a bottle design inspired by the Bauhaus aesthetics. The cologne also arrived in a context where the simple name "L'Homme" was still capable of sounding distinctive and ear-catching a year after Dior Homme breathed new life into the masculine world of fragrances thanks its overdosed floral iris accord imagined by perfumer Olivier Polge (the sleek design-conscious packaging by Hedi Slimane counted as well to define the identity of the Dior perfume). Since then, numerous men's colognes touting a spare manhood label have been added to the point of drowning that sense of being simply a man's fragrance and standing apart thanks to a lack of fussiness. Sensing this, Yves Saint Laurent just released a more narrative flanker cologne titled La Nuit de L'Homme as a sequel to L'Homme (our review of the new scent is up next)...

An interesting early advertising American label for an Eau de Cologne from Boston dating from the 1870s depicting a duel between Ja'ques and Farina, both makers of the wonderful Eau de Cologne
As 2009 marks the 300th anniversary of the Eau de Cologne (is it a simple
coincidence?), a village feud spanning the centuries and resembling in flavor that of the Capulets and
Montagues gets settled for a little while in favor of the Feminises
over the Farinas, both candidates to the title of inventor of the Eau
de Cologne...

Found a little jewel in a book from the first part of the 19th century recounting an interesting use of Eau de Cologne. Eau de Cologne could be used or was used once as an alcoholic drink by sailors aboard a ship short on rum. They had the idea of drinking it with water and sugar and called it a Cologne-Sling then sang its praises. The song reveals the sailors' resourcefulness. At the time, it would have appeared unusual but not outlandish an approach as Eau de Cologne was ingurgitated as a medecine in that era. I would love to know the air on which this sailors' drinking song was sung. "EAU DE COLOGNE, OR THE NOVEL BEVERAGE.
Our ancient poets sung the praise Of nectar and of wine, And made us believe their influence Was god-like and divine;
But I'll embrace another theme, A novel one I own : In random verse I now chaunt forth The praises of cologne....

Spotted a genealogical link between a set of three perfume bottles from the 1950s and the distinctive Betsey Johnson EDP issued in 2006. The Betsey Johnson stopper is not 100% identical but very much inspired by their forerunners similarly made out of bright plastic. The glass flacon is also a copy with a twist. I think we have found the lost grand-mothers of the more recent Betsey Johnson Eau de Parfum. The 50s bottles do not seem to come from a famous brand. They must thus for this reason as well be reproductions of more ancient flacons as one would doubt that they would have had the resources to do original research and design. My guess is that they are cheap but cute imitations of Art Deco Czech perfume flacons. Any clues welcome!
A genius ambient marketing campaign organized on the guerilla mode by Mizbala Advertising Agency in Israel allowed Christina Aguilera perfume to sell out in less than a week at the national level. The advertisers using the naughty-sounding tag line "Sometimes it's all you need to wear" of the original commercial subverted it by using sedate coat hangers instead with a sample of the perfume attached to those to entice passers-by. The coat hangers became like an obsessive refrain seen everywhere and that was then repercuted in the media...

A 1981 ad for Dioressence by famous illustrator Gruau
Here follows an interesting quote from perfumer Guy Robert (Calèche, Dioressence, Madame Rochas, Monsieur Rochas, Amouage Gold, The Pink Room...) about the role of marketing in perfumery seen in a more positive light than is usual to convey. It has become a little bit bon ton perhaps, and conformist even, to decry marketing and oppose it to Art with a capital letter as if they were enemies. I think that Robert's thinking is a more balanced assessment of the historic role of marketing, which one can't ignore, in shaping the destinies of perfume as we know it. This insight helps to surmount over-simplistic dichotomies and make us realize that the object we love as perfume is beholden to the progress of that branch of perfumery too...

Amanda Lepore also known as the "#1 transsexual in the world", after becoming a muse for photographer David LaChapelle has turned into a fragrant muse for perfumers as well. First comes the perfume called Amanda by Artware Editions created by perfumer Christopher Laudamiel formerly of International Fragrances and Flavors in collaboration with partner Christopher Hornetz who designed the perfume bottle incrusted with 1000 pieces of Swarowski crystals. "Mr. Laudamiel started with a base of steamed rice, added mandarins,
bergamot, orange flowers, strawberry and cucumber. Fittingly, the
Champagne note is artificial."...

The newer ad with model Natalia Bulova for Valentino EDP, new this spring As we all know, popular culture thrives on patterns of repetition, and advertising culture is no exception to the rule. Sometimes the similarities between two adverts are willed and purposefully made to feel obvious as in the case of Hypnôse Homme and Hypnôse Femme by Lancôme. When the similarities are spotted between two different perfumes for two different brands, this taking place within months of the launch of the first one, it leaves you wondering whether Valentino is not taking a risk at appearing to have been overly fascinated by John Galliano and lacking ideas. The theatrical smoky purple eye with a dramatic elongated dark eyebrow contrasted with a milky-white skin were just too irresistible to let go of. The romantic vampish look, where the new black is purple-fuschia and the new pink is also purple-fushia, is the image to retain these last two seasons.
Calvin Klein is introducing a fresh and green floral twist on the 2005 floral oriental Euphoria called Euphoria Spring Temptation. It is a limited-edition flanker for Springtime 09. The tag line is " Let spring reveal your femininity." To mark the occasion, the bottle was decorated with the rendition of a tropical garden in metallic hues. The perfume, as suggested by the advert, plays on sensations of dewiness featuring notes of guava leaf, pear blossom, a water fall accord, pink lily, freesia and violet petals covered with dew drops, creamy sandalwood, white amber, frosted musk. A 50 ml bottle of Eau de Parfum is priced at 54 €. Source: News Parfums
The Calvin Klein CKIN2U franchise sees the addition of a new her-and-his duo of fragrances this year with CKIN2U Heat, apparently the most sexually explicit CKIN2U to date. When the original duo was launched sex pheromones were flying around in the air already but they got rapidly cooled down by the term " technosexual" which sounded a little inhuman. The target audience was not pleased...
