"The Green Spirit of The Hammam" by Guest Contributor Pauline The professional trade show Maison & Objet was on last week in Paris. I decided to pay a visit to the exhibition in order to discover the latest trends in that section of the fair devoted to "Fragrances, Bath & Cosmetics." Before being completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of stands in that section, I decided to focus on beauty products that are connected to the enticing world of the hammam and in particular, the natural cosmetic oil that is the most talked about in town these days, argan oil from Morocco. Two beauty brands caught my attention as I liked the range of their products and their air of authenticity. They are both harnessing the all-natural, green ecological trend that the beauty market is developing more and more in response to consumers' demands while drawing on a very ancient heritage from the Middle East. I bought several products I wanted to try and today, I will talk about Tadé.
TADÉ, Pays du Levant (Country of the Levant) is a 100% natural line of cosmetics that draws on an original historical concept, the universe of the hammam, and proposes products for both men and women..... In Mars and April 2008, M.A.C. will release a new makeup collection called Chick-A-Boom. The graphic design for the line was entrusted to cartoonist Fafi who created three new Fafinette characters for the collection: Eriko, Monoka, and Ermine. As part of her MAC 2008 world tour, please note that she will be present at Bendel's in New York City on February 13.....

Major beauty companies have now decided to go green and spare the live(r)s of sharks. Squalene, a natural organic compound with much vaunted beauty properties found in shark liver, but also in Amaranth seed, rice brean, wheat germ, and olives (Wikipedia) was so extensively harvested from deep-sea sharks that it had started to threaten their survival. You may have come across it in health supplements or Palmer's Scar Serum found at CVS. The anti-oxydant properties of Shark-derived Squalene are so popular with the Hollywood set that Kym Douglas and Cindy Pearlman reported in The Black Book of Hollywood Secrets that it had become a strange yet recognizable smell found in the vicinity of many a star (it smells like fish and algae -- frankly a quite sickening odor). Apparently, a number of actors wear shark liver oil like a permanent mask or primer....

Dr. Hunter's Rosewater & Glycerine Hand Creme by Caswell-Massey - one of the oldest American brands founded by Dr. William Hunter in 1752 in Newport, Rhode Island - smells like the roses cultivated by our grand-mothers in their gardens, in the best sense possible of this representation. The scent of the cream is delicate, fresh, very realistic and refined enough to evoke the fruitiness of Nahema by Guerlain; in short, it is an impressively scented hand cream. So much so that more than a good hand cream it can double up as a fragrance cream as the perfume feels intense enough to fulfill this purpose. We noticed that it is best to apply this cream like one would a mask rather than a cream that would need to be rubbed in. The rose perfume just smells much better when left alone as much can be......

Looking for a versatile blush/face highlighting powder? Something in the vein of Nars Orgasm, but different, maybe more subtle? Dandelion by Benefit Cosmetics San Francisco might just be your answer (or another color in the range -- we purchased Dandelion). What the ad copy says, "Fake awake with Dandelion - Benefit's ballerina-pink pressed highlighting powder. Just one stroke of Dandelion takes your complexion from dull to radiant in an instant. It's shimmery, satiny, radiant, perk-me-up finish is guaranteed to make them wonder ..."How do you look so pretty at eight in the morning?" What The Scented Salamander thinks,......

This review is based on two products by the men's grooming brand Every Man Jack, the Body Wash & shower scrub and Body Bar in the citrus scent. It appears not to be available yet on their site but is at Target. We probably would not have paid any extra amount of attention to the line had they not sent us the products. Now that we have we can report that not only is the Body Wash in particular a *great* product for the skin, with a special pleasing texture and properties that really work, but that we discovered also that due to its beyond-the-call-of-duty deodorizing qualities, it is a superior aid for removing unwanted lingering on smells of fragrances. So Bath & Body people and Perfume Lovers, listen up!.......

The pet haute perfume category seems to be picking up since its revival by Etienne de Swardt with Oh My Dog! If the Romans already had the idea of perfuming animals and if some pooh lovers might have occasionally directed a perfume atomizer towards theirs favorite pets, one cannot say that the association of fine fragrances and pet animals has become a natural one, yet......

Opi is introducing a new color in October of 2007 called Pink of Hearts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a porcelain-like milky pink pastel and the caps are cutely decorated with pink ribbons to express the symbolism of the month. Isn't it appropriate that the color would evoke milk too? It makes us think of strawberry milk.....

Creme de la Mer has issued a new cream dedicated to the care of the fragile area around the eye. It is called The Eye Concentrate and includes "three unique forms" of the famous "miracle broth". It includes algae, calcium, magnesium, essential oils of citruses, eucalyptus, alfalfa, and sunflower, but at the same time sophisticated new approaches have been developed, including the use of a Hematite metal applicator which contributes to the cooling of the eye area and whose magnetic properties are said to help reduce puffiness and dark circles.......
