Advertising campaigns for CK One by Calvin Klein (1994) are some of the most look-conscious - you want to say rather than fashion-conscious because the models seem so under-dressed all the time. It's been said that the "new freshness" perfume helped define the feel of a generation and this is also due to the intertwining of olfactory cues with iconic billboards and packaging. The 2009 summer limited-edition of CK One revealed how sartorially conscious and youth-oriented the brand is. Bringing these affinities to their ultimate consequence, Calvin Klein Inc, together with Calvin Klein Fragrances, under the umbrella of Coty Prestige, and Warnaco Inc are joining forces to create an eponymous fashion label drawing inspiration from the Zeitgeist-y perfume CK One...

The house of Paquin which was established in 1891 by ex-model and model-maker Jeanne Paquin née Jeanne Beckers and closed its doors in 1956 despite having bought Worth just a few years before, is preparing for its comeback to take place this October 2010. The rich heritage of the house will be tapped into from several different angles at the same time beyond its haute couture flair. What is somewhat unusual is that the brand now based in London will be given new life not just in the field of fashion but in perfumery as well. In fact, the fashion lines of prêt-à-porter are going to be streamlined at first being offered in limited editions of 20, 30, 50 and 100 copies maximum. The man at the helm of this planned renaissance is artistic director Louison Libertin, whose background is both in fashion design and perfumery. Fragrance-wise, he is a graduate of Cinquième Sens, worked at one time as a junior perfumer assisting nose Olivia Giacobetti and is the founder since 2008 of his own line of perfumes, candles and cosmetics, Technique Indiscrète...

Seeing the discussion triggered by the new advert for Bang, the upcoming new cologne by Marc Jacobs, I went to dig into the internet archives to try to find a 2006 W magazine cover cited by Women's Wear Daily as showing a nude Marc Jacobs posing with business partner Robert Duffy. I found it but only after I also happened on a Vuitton photo shoot with Marc Jacobs wearing pink graffitis and nothing else, besides his tattoos. NSFW probably, unless you work in an advertising agency...

Last winter 2009, the perfume brand Mila Schön launched a range of 5 fragrances meant to retrace each of the decades that marked the career in fashion of the Italian designer (ca.1916 -2008). The Time Collection includes '60,'70,'80,'90 and '00 and are said to be " born from a deep study of the path Mila Schön went through in fashion and design." ...

Fashion designer Michael Kors will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Thursday June 10th 2010 by The Fragrance Foundation in recognition of his major contributions to the American perfume industry. He has signed three successful fragrance franchises since 2000: the Michael Kors signature range for both women and men, the Michael Kors Island collection which debuted in 2005 and most recently the Very Hollywood Michael Kors perfume. "The Hall of Fame award is voted on by The Foundation's Board of Directors and is presented to an individual who has brought extraordinary ingenuity, creativity, dedication and inner resources to bear, not only to their company's success but to the fragrance industry as a whole."...

After reading an interview with Back-at-the-Ranch founder and owner Wendy Henry and getting a little lost in my contemplation of her fabulous cowboy boots, I had to go back to one important mention in the article published by WWD this morning. Important that is for beautistas, perfumistas, fashionistas. In it Santa-Fe based Henry mentioned in passing that some of her boots are inspired by, guess what, nail polishes and perfume! "I've been inspired by [everything from] rodeo queens to Ralph Lauren.
I'm very visual and love fabrics and textures. I've created new styles
from nail polish colors and perfume bottles."
It is true that many of her boots feature highly saturated lipstick red color and that one can spy roses on several models. But in fact it was a good idea to ask her because as it turns out, it's a different line than the one I thought might be the obvious candidate, plus the perfume-inspired boots are still upcoming. So here's the scoop...

Balenciaga Ready-To-Wear Fall 2010 © Giovanni GiannoniPerfume - as one may or may not fully realize - is one of the pillars of the fashion industry as it generates a democratic revenue stream that simply would not exist by relying only on the creativity of Haute Couture or even high end, research-oriented ready-to-wear. Selling fragrance bottles is not only a good cash flow source but a brand carrier. A successful perfume will contribute in a major way to building the mythology of a fashion brand. Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, even Dior can be grateful to the perfume industry for their prestige and freedom as couture houses....

So this morning I see this link to Alexander McQueen in my newsletter from Neiman Marcus: The Art of Fashion. I click on it, I see the "Mermaid Racerback Tankdress." Then I scroll down to look at other models and I happen on...Spanx. After clicking on it, I marvel at the advertising ingenuity of Spanx who know how to turn a lost battle of the bulge into a triumph of the feminine willpower as I read "Spanx Power Panties." Love the blue, love the attitude....

While Lady Gaga is preparing to launch her own fashion label with the support of Versace, she is counting on the talents of Armani and Prada to dress her for her Monster Ball tour. Turning to both Italian designers, she got contrasted propositions. I think we are seeing a trend called Lady Gaga loves Italian Fashion. And who could blame her? It's always been so feminine and sensual a fashion for women...

OMG, uncanny. After the news of the death of Lee Alexander McQueen sank in, I started thinking about who could possibly fill the void and take the relay of his creative genius. The candidate that popped into my mind at that time was not from the circles of fashion but from pop-singing: Lady Gaga! Well, lo and behold, OK! Magazine have announced that look-artist Lady Gaga has associated herself with Donatella Versace to create her own line of clothing and that she has been in part prompted to do so because of the death of McQueen. The singer might not have had the rigorous training that her spiritual mentor had in Savile Row and Saint Martin's but you can definitely perceive that she is a kindred spirit and knows how to push boundaries (understatement)...

© B. AchAn article in the Mail attempts to offer context about the suicide of Alexander McQueen. As it turns out, his mother's funeral was to take place today. He had been reportedly so affected by her passing away that he would not leave his bed and could not attend to his professional duties. The article also mentions previous suicide attempts in the past. Tributes are pouring in. Sarah Jessica Parker offered a particularly eloquent and loving tribute to his memory describing him as " a quiet genius" and saying,... McQueen posing after he received the CBE in 2003
