Happy New Year 2010 to All! / Meilleurs voeux pour une bonne année 2010!
Here's hoping that 2010 will be rich in discoveries and beautiful, perfumed and flavorful enlightenments! And let's not forget, fun!!
All the best,
-- Marie-Hélène
I foresee that in January 2010, I will need to add fragrances to the site that were launched in 2009 and that I would like to keep track of. I could add them to the database or follow the blog format and put them on the home page. Hope the latter option is not a hindrance for a little while. I posted last year about several Des Filles à la Vanille 2009
launches. I just realized they had been working to their death last year
and introduced some 25-30 fragrances or so in between.
It is difficult to date their perfumes because the brand does not feel comfortable with the idea of talking about " nouveautés"
or new launches, as I found out. They prefer to think in terms of what they have in
stock in their boutiques of clothing at any given time. Part of the reason for this attitude
might be that the fragrances by Des Filles à la Vanille are able to
multiply thanks to small increments of change and also thanks to the key notion of
the "perfume twist." You can thus find sub-libraries of musks or
patchoulis or vanillas or ambers that play on variations. Let's put some order in that heap of perfume bottles. There is a sub-collection called Princesse Hippie which includes a patchouli, amber, musk and vanilla scents. They are called Ambre Princesse Hippie or Vanille Princesse Hippie...

Spanish fashion label Mango launched a new mass-market women's perfume in December 2009 called Lady Rebel. The perfume's imagery and spirit is in the same vein as those of Lady Vengeance by Juliette Has a Gun, Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her, Ma Dame by Jean Paul Gaultier and Anna Sui Rock Me! The two latter scents are even fronted by the same model, Agyness Deyn who started to incarnate a spirit of reckless youth for Burberry The Beat and hasn't stopped since then...

Last fall 2009, a Spanish celebrity fragrance was launched in a category doubly less trodden: the celeb journalist perfume to support a humanitarian cause. Ana Rosa Quintana is a famous television anchor in Spain involved in several projects revolving around aid to disadvantaged children both in her home country and Latin America...

Seattle-based company Blue Marble Energy defines its mission as, "...utilizing hybridized
bacterial consortia to produce specialty biochemicals and renewable
biogas. Our mission is to displace oil with fully renewable, carbon
neutral alternatives."
To prove the point, they teamed with a local artisan perfumery called Sweet Anthem to create a duo of fragrances, EOS for Her and Him, that uses brewery waste to replace petroleum. "The EOS line features a special selection of Blue Marble Energy's
bioester fragrances as the top note, carefully blended with Sweet
Anthem's custom heart notes and low notes." "At Seattle's Blue Marble Energy, chemists are cooking up a perfume
made from the waste products of a local organic brewery, including
rancid beer grains, green algae and a "sludge" consisting of 50,000
different kinds of bacteria.
The grains replace petroleum in the production process making the perfume, called Eos, completely carbon neutral."...

Elizabeth Taylor at the launch of White Diamonds at the Plaza Hotel in New York city in September 1991The market research group Euromonitor International published a list of the 9 best-selling fragrances in the celebrity category for the US in 2008. The top spot was earned by veteran celebrity perfume White Diamonds by the house of Elizabeth Taylor which launched in 1991. It made our aspirational Smell-Expensive-for-Less list last year....

Givenchy is spoiling young women this beginning of 2010. Alongside Eaudemoiselle, there will be the new Dance with Givenchy. Dance here is meant to incarnate a spirit of feminine freedom, sensuality and grace. It reminds one also in an indirect fashion of former Givenchy icon Audrey Hepburn who used to be a ballet dancer and whose gamine charm was often showcased in similar black skinny pants or tights...

2009 was a peak year for oud in personal fine fragrances for women's, men's and unisex scents. One of the launches that participated in the movement was Jacques Bogart Silver Scent Intense. It is the sequel to Silver Scent issued in 2006 which also featured oud wood. It is reportedly a "more powerful and more luxurious" twist on it. The scent is inspired by the personality of actor Humphrey Bogart aka Bogie and the universe of the movie The Maltese Falcon...

Wolfgang Joop will release what is presented as his second men's scent under this particular label following Wolfgang Joop (2008) (as opposed to the former label Joop! with which the founder of the brand is reportedly no longer involved.) The label Joop! itself has seen the introductions of Homme, Nightlife, Jump, Go and Thrill and has built a reputation for unconventional masculines. The new cologne to debut in February 2010 in Germanophone Europe is called Freigeist (Freethinker). According to WWD, Wolfgang Joop's reaction to the name proposed by Stefanie Fitzgerald VP of Marketing for Coty Prestige was, "My goodness, what a heavy word for a light scent.'" ...

Today January 6 is Day 1 of the Annual Winter Sales called Soldes d'Hiver in France. It is also the day of the Epiphany (I mention this because of the tasty and flavorful traditionally almond-filled galettes des rois pastries). They will last until February 9. It is only during this official bracketed time that retailers are allowed to lose money on sales and to try to sell off old stocks. The early media reports have been predicting record discount percentages from the beginning. While it is more usual to see prices drop steadily as the period of 5 weeks unwind, this time from what I have been able to see, prices are indeed deeply cut from day 1 at 50% off or 70% off for perfumes. It remains to be seen what stocks will appear later on as from what I have been able to observe, only part of the products were put on display and in some stores there were rather relaxed about bringing out the discounted goods but were willing to check in the back of their boutiques...

Mauboussin Eau de Parfum launched in 2000 is making a comeback in Paris with a new advert which has recently appeared on the streets. The perfume was created by Christine Nagel. The flacon was designed by Thierry de Baschmakoff. The new ad campaign is led by the argument that you could be one of the lucky few, 12 total, who could win a 0,10 carat diamond to be found in the box titled "Un Parfum, Un Diamant..." estimated at a 300 € value. A booklet and a certificate of authenticity are included. Until the end of January 2010.

Laurence Dumont is launching a new perfume collection entitled Charmes Secrets (Secret Charms). It comprises four perfumes meant to evoke four different and complementary universes destined to women who are on a mission to charm and seduce. They are called Fleur de Tendresse ( Flower of Tenderness), Douce Caresse (Soft Caress), Nuit Sensuelle (Sensual Night), Passion Absolue (Absolute Passion). The fragrances were composed by perfumer Philippe Collet of Expressions Parfumées who has also composed Annayake Tsukimi and Salvador Dali Dalimania the latter which I have already mentioned on the blog as an overlooked exotic dark-vanilla-heavy scent...
