Simon and Yasmin Mills are having a bit of fun at the expense of the dazzling celebrity fragrance culture. From A to Z, how do you manage to develop a celeb fragrance with no star power to speak of and none of the usual corporate resources? "There’s a brilliant bit in Woody Allen’s 1980 classic Stardust Memories, where the neurotic director nuzzles up to Charlotte Rampling. “Mmm, you smell nice,” La Rampling says seductively. “That aftershave. It just made my whole childhood come back with a sudden Proustian rush.” “Yeah?” Allen replies. “That’s because I’m wearing Proustian Rush by Chanel. It was reduced. I got a vat of it.” Read more in the Times Online.......

Delicious Night by Donna Karan is said to aim to capture the atmosphere of New York City at night. As is made clear by the website supporting the launch of the perfume, uncoverthecity.com, the scent targets bachelorettes in particular who are believed to be its ideal fragrance consumers and thought to be always potentially interested in a sexy perfume to wear on a night out with a band of girl-friends. Looking sideways at a potential mate is of course not forbidden and even encouraged if you read the perfume clearly.

Our thoughts have been turning towards the celebration of Halloween and of course those perfumes that might evoke best the shadows and lights, smells and tastes on that particular night. Meanwhile we happened on three new limited edition collections of scents issued by Black Pheonix Alchemy Lab, which warrant a post on their own. The creepy, lugubrious collections are called Halloween Blends, Halloween Blends: The Haunted House, and Halloween Blends: Pumpkin Patch 2007. The names and notes sound terribly interesting. Since there are 22 perfumes in all, it is best to refer you to the page on which they can be purchased. We already singled out Bonfire Night with notes of Beer, woodsmoke, tar, and treacle; The Death of Autumn with notes of Dark amber, dead leaves, khus, saffron, bitter clove, chrysanthemum, camellia, galangal, and a drop of oud. The Atrocious Attic gives us the chill just reading the description,......

This review is based on two products by the men's grooming brand Every Man Jack, the Body Wash & shower scrub and Body Bar in the citrus scent. It appears not to be available yet on their site but is at Target. We probably would not have paid any extra amount of attention to the line had they not sent us the products. Now that we have we can report that not only is the Body Wash in particular a *great* product for the skin, with a special pleasing texture and properties that really work, but that we discovered also that due to its beyond-the-call-of-duty deodorizing qualities, it is a superior aid for removing unwanted lingering on smells of fragrances. So Bath & Body people and Perfume Lovers, listen up!.......

Jeweler Mauboussin has introduced a new women's fragrance called Emotion Divine. Isabelle Serranti is a natural perfumer based in Amherst, Massachusetts and her perfume brand is called Desire in Sunlight. She has released two new perfumes in her Vaux-Le-Vicomte series inspired by the beauty of the masterpiece of 17th century European architecture that is the château of Vaux-Le-Vicomte as well as the dramatic history surrounding it. They are titled Le Jardin and La Fête and come after Le Rêve. (The blue shoe evokes La Fête)
The castle was so lavishly constructed and its owner, Fouquet, so visibly ambitious that the Sun King Louis XIV took umbrage and had him imprisoned for life after he gave an extraordinary celebration there that has remained famous in the annals of history. As Voltaire succinctly put it, "On 17 August [1661], at six in the evening Fouquet was the King of France: at two in the morning he was nobody." Louis XIV would go on to build Versailles with the help of the designers for Vaux-Le-Vicomte: Le Vau, Le Brun, Le Nôtre........

The association "Grand Prix International du Flacon de Parfum" is organizing the 7th edition of its annual awards called Les Flacon d'Or (Golden Flacons) given to the best perfume flacon in the feminine, masculine, and children categories. This year, the competition includes the outer packaging as well. Perfume bottles have been short-listed already and the selection includes fragrances from past years, not just this year's creations. The pool of candidates appears fairly narrow and somewhat a bit arbitrarily-chosen, but you can win 40 000 Euros worth of prizes if you participate in the game here from October 15 to November 30 2007.
Ernest Shiftan (1903-1975) in his time was a renowned perfumer working for IFF with a reputation in particular for being an excellent mentor to younger perfumers. Sophia Grojsman for example was trained under him. Despite the recognition by his peers that he was a great perfumer in the tradition of American perfumery, little data is immediately available concerning his career and creations, apparently in great part due to secretive practices that were even more dominant in the industry then than now. But also, it might be hypothesized, due to the possibility that he might have operated as a supervisor and collaborator on a number of perfume creations rather than as their sole author. We encounter again the tricky issue of ascribing authorship clearly in perfumery and some perfumers - it must be noted - do not even think that it really constitute an issue. In 1974, a newspaper article presented him as "a senior vice-president and chemist at IFF."
His creations include: Offrande by Cheramy (1925) (with Paul Schving), Youth Dew (1952) (with Josephine Catapano - not all sources mention him), Le De by Givenchy (1957), Norell by Norell (1967-1968) (with Josephine Catapano - not all sources mention him), Island Promises by Fragrance of the Bahamas Ltd. (ca.1970),.....

A picture of the new Valentino Rock 'n Rose Couture. This is the Parfum version of the previously released Rock 'n Rose Eau de Parfum. Please note how the fishnet and lacy covering fashion for perfume bottles, made out of real material in this case, is picking up this fall as we noted earlier on in a post about the fishnet trend on perfume bottles.
Bath & Body Works has introduced three new perfumes in its Signature Collection called Blackberry Amber, Velvet Tuberose, and Irresistible Apple (the last one we are less sure about its newness but we do not recall it from our last whirlwind tour of BBW. The only scent that stuck a bit in our memory was Wild Honeysuckle by the way.) Blackberry Amber is one of several new scents you can turn to this fall if you love blackberry. The two others are DKNY Delicious Night and Sali Oguri Persephone. So this Blackberry Amber has notes of, - Fragrance Top Notes: Blackberry, Dewberry, Red Raspberry
- Fragrance Mid Notes: Jasmine, Heliotrope Flower, Light Caramel
- Fragrance Base Notes: Vanilla Infusion, Golden Amber, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Musk......
