L'Herbier Parfumé: Histoires Humaines des Plantes à Parfum by Freddy Ghozland and Xavier Fernandez {Fragrant Reading - New Book}

herbier-parfume.gif

First Impressions

Among the crop of new perfume books this fall, L'Herbier Parfumé: histoires humaines des plantes à parfums by Freddy Ghozland and Xavier Fernandez with a preface by Elizabeth de Feydeau, will be one of your best bets for a pleasurable, informative reading and Holidays gift this season.

The subtitle "the human stories of perfume plants" is a reference more to the creators, i.e., perfumers who each speak about an ingredient to be found in the palette of the perfumers than to the history of human societies unfolding around key olfactory materials although Elizabeth de Feydeau's very substantive and mis-named "preface" goes more in a historical and social direction....

5 Perfumers Reveal Their Fashion Savvy {Fragrant Reading}

absolue-soir-rick-owens.jpgPerfumers are more often than not asked to translate the vision of a fashion designer into liquid meaning. In a reverse exercise hosted by French magazine L'Express, 5 perfumers - Jean-Claude Ellena, Thierry Wasser, Francis Kukdjian, Fabrice Pellegrin and François Demachy - were asked to imagine what style of fashion would best embody one of their latest creations...

Jean-Paul Guerlain's New Book, Parfums d'Amour {Fragrance News} {Fragrant Reading}

Parfums d'amour_Guerlain-A.jpgPerfumer and author Jean-Paul Guerlain although better known for his love of and dedication to perfumery has long confessed his love for literature. The author of a memoir book previously about his travels to uncover essences and rare materials, Les routes de mes parfums (The Paths of my Perfumes) (Editions Le Cherche Midi in 2002), October 2010 will see him unveil a new tome entitled Parfums d'Amour (Perfumes of Love.)

The Guerlain men and noses from the dynasty are famed for seeking inspiration in the love they feel for their wives and the women of the family. Jean-Paul Guerlain has said on numerous occasions and consistently that what he has added to the mix after heeding the advice of his grand-father Jacques Guerlain, the creator of Shalimar among others, is his belief that you can create fragrances for women you admire as well...

Genesis of Miller Harris L'Air de Rien Explained {Fragrant Reading}

gainsbourg-birkin.jpg

L'Air de Rien (As if Nothing was the Matter) by Miller Harris was launched in 2006 as a bespoke fragrance for Franco-British actress and songstress Jane Birkin. This year, a flanker was issued called Un Petit Rien, which is really a misnomer as the scent seems to riff further and deeper on the animalic notes of the first. But nobody said you could not play with perfume-wearers' expectations...

Profiles of Chanel Egoïste & Bleu by Jacques Polge {Fragrant Reading}

jacques-polge.jpgHint Fashion Magazine has a Q & A with Chanel perfumer Jacques Polge who speaks about Egoïste and the more recent Bleu.

The nose does not hesitate to quality his latest creation as being on the sedate side, contrasting it with Egoïste which is a much more daring composition in his view.

"Bleu is the opposite of Egoïste. Egoïste was inspired by a woman's fragrance, whereas there is nothing feminine about Bleu...

Beauty Imagined by Geoffrey Jones Starts with Chapter on The Scents of Paris {Fragrant Reading}

beauty-imagined.jpg
An article in WWD this morning reminded me I had purchased the new book by Harvard Business School professor Geoffrey Jones entitled Beauty Imagined: A History of the Global Beauty Industry some time ago.

Interestingly for a book devoted to the beauty industry in general, it starts with a chapter on the sub-domain of the fragrance industry entitled "Scent and Paris." This is no mere chance as Geoffrey Jones turns conventional wisdom on its head and proposes the hypothesis that it is in fact perfume and the scenting of beauty products that have shaped the beauty industry as we know it today and been a motor in its development...

The Art & Technology of Luxury Fragrance Bottles: Not only the Look but the Weight & the Sound Matter...So True {Fragrant Reading}

versace_crystal_noir.jpgA February 2010 article in Cosmetics Business reports about recent trends in fragrance-bottle making and what makes a luxury perfume flacon truly tick. I especially loved the passage where specialists point out to the importance of the feeling of weight and the sound the cap makes when you open it, which all send cues of luxury. Sound-engineering is critical when designing cars for instance, and the noise the door makes when it opens or close is never left to chance. But to go back to perfume, this is oh-so true.

Off the top of my head, the brands that have made me notice these discreet yet fully perceptible details are Dior for its oh-so-smooth spraying system: it feels like butter and the scent vaporizes gently and effectively like a dream; the click of a Chanel Exclusif magnetic cap is truly a sensory experience in privilege; Hermès's push-down cap is ingenuous, unexpected and sleek...

W Magazine Visits Serge Lutens's Abode in Marrakech {Fragrant Readings}

lutens_purple.jpg
T-letter-tss-quaint-B.jpgThe June 2010 issue of W Magazine has a story on the house designed by Serge Lutens in Marrakech. The place itself is reportedly little lived-in as Lutens prefers the more humane proportions of a modest studio on the outskirts of the city. It still serves as his perfumer's laboratory.

Visitors to the Shiseido Salons at the Palais Royal will notice Serge Lutens's predilection for a purple range of colors, which is a trademark of the Salons, and has appeared most recently verbatim on the outer packaging of the upcoming Boxeuses to be launched in September 2010...

Smells of Feminine & Masculine Sweats Analyzed: Discover the B.O. Wheel {Fragrant Reading}

B-O-Wheel.jpg
An article in Slate from last year took a closer look at human sweat and the Body Odor Wheel to make better sense of it. An early aromatic wheel was the Wine Aroma Wheel developed by the University of California-Davis's Ann Noble, a chemist, in 1984. The article is based on findings by researchers at Firmenich.

"In January, a Swiss fragrance firm concluded after years of study that female perspiration smells like grapefruit, passion fruit, and onion, while male sweat smells more cheesy, rancid, and animalic...
