The Victoria & Albert Museum in London is organizing an exhibition on fashion and sports called Fashion V Sport which started on the 5th of August 2008 and will run until the 4th of January 2009. Within it, sensory artist Sissel Tolaas has set up an olfactory thread that runs through the exhibit, creating a second invisible exhibition entitled Bodisme only discernable to the nose, thus developing further her work on human body odor. The scent installations on display are to be found in each of the four sections of the exhibition: "DARE A 'clean' sweaty body without bacterial interaction DISPLAY A sweaty body overlaid with deodorant/ artificial smells PLAY A sweaty body's unique 'smell fingerprint' that carries natural messages in pheromones, bacterial interaction, DESIRE A custom-made simulated body smell as a base scent with added molecules on top to communicate the desired message"...

After posting about the possible implications of a research from Ilinois about the importance of looks for political candidates for winning more votes and wondering what that might mean for Sarah Palin whose looks have been particularly commented upon during the presidential campaign, what do I see but a charity auction on eBay for the 25th anniversary of the Cabbage Patch Kids featuring all 4 candidates! And guess who is winning? Sarah Palin a.k.a. "caribou barbie" (another popular icon of feminine beauty) is doing very well as the Sarah Palin Cabbage Patch Kid. She is currently priced at $9,600 followed by Barack Obama at $2,125 then John McCain at $1,525 and Joe Biden at $710 ( see for yourself).
The Irish Independent has the best article I have seen so far written about the new version of Chanel No. 5 - that eternal classic - called Eau Première. One of the reasons, besides the fact that it is a detailed piece, is that we are offered a rare and informative interview with perfumer Christopher Sheldrake visiting the Chanel or rather Jospeph Mul's jasmine fields in Grasse for the first time; Mul has been under an exclusive contract with Chanel since 1987. Journalist Sarah Caden has managed to put the perfumer enough at ease so that he confides a bit. Of interest for those who have followed Sheldrake's work with Serge Lutens is to learn that the perfumer was born in Madras, India and that his father was in the spice trade! Ensues more biographical details....

Playboy Bunnies Shannon, Lindsey and Colleen at the fragrances launch party at the Hotel on Rivington in New York City on October 30, 2008. © J. Kohen Not everyone can be Hugh Hefner and he understands that. But you can get the Word translated into perfume and spread the message around. Sex guru, eye-candy master and lifestyle coach Hefner has launched a series of four perfumes for men destined to awaken your desires and those of your elected partners while teaching a lesson on life. The latter part seems as important as the first and that is to learn to play the Hefner way, meaning living your own personal dreams and, very importantly, leaving as little as possible to chance. This venture comes as Playboy has been experiencing financial difficulties due to a drop of circulation of their magazine, but no one can deny the major impact Playboy has had on pop culture. Hollywood Playboy, Vegas Playboy, Miami Playboy and Malibu Playboy, developed by Coty Inc., are all meant to capture a different type of man, each associated with the spirit of a particular place known for its high-living style... Jeans label True Religion has introduced a new perfume for women simply called True Religion Eau de Parfum. The bottle is cute, a little bit Gothic and a little bit grunge. "Day or night, this clean scent takes you on a refreshing journey
with an opening of sparkling fruits, adding freshness andvitality. A
captivating floral heart mingles with sweet yet tart nuances of pear
blossom further enveloping your spirit. Warm woods and skin-like musks
are woven throughout the background, embracing you in deep sensuality.
It is a delicious and very addictive fragrance statement."
It is available at Nordstrom, 50 ml for $59 and $79 for 100 ml. You receive a True Religion canvas tote with your $79 purchase, while supply lasts.

Who would have thought that Aquolina would one day launch a perfume extract of their original Pink Sugar, back in 2002? Its style, following the vision of Antonella Pascale, was meant to be casual and playful. It smelled of warm cookies and sugared candy floss aplenty. It completely lacked pretension. Yet, thanks to its enduring popularity, this non-slavish take on the concept of a Thierry Mugler Angel, the archetypal gourmand oriental, has now a luxurious version of itself in the person of Pink Sugar Luxury Extract...

Annika Sorenstam at the Espy Awards, July 16, 2008 © Mayer
Swedish golfer and super champion Annika Sorenstam will launch a perfume and wine bearing her name in May 2009, both called Annika. They are both developed by SA Fragrances, a company based in the Boston greater area which has also contributed to the creations of perfumes such as Calvin Klein Eternity, Obsession, Dior Poison, Chanel Coco, and more. From the press release, "SA Fragrances announced today their plan to develop a signature fragrance
inspired by legendary golfer Annika Sorenstam. Set to be released
in advance of Mother's Day 2009, the fragrance will evoke the essence
of Annika, a distinctive, casually elegant and naturally beautiful woman.
Arguably the most dominant
female golfer of all time, Annika has transcended her sport to become
a prominent mainstream athlete and celebrity. Throughout her storied
career, she has rewritten the LPGA and Ladies European Tour record books,
won countless awards and events and brought unprecedented attention
to women's golf. Along the way, she has inspired millions of young
women worldwide...

The Get-Out-The-Vote (& Grab-A-Scent-On-The-Go) Perfume ListIt is a priori tricky to attempt to draw a connection, many will perceive as superfluous, between perfume-wearing and election day, but as I have been reading on a steady stream of accounts describing the grueling waiting-period people have to endure to cast in their votes, I decided it was time to call attention to what perfume can do for the morale of the citizens. Those who are already aware of the psychological effects of perfume, such as perfumistas, have a unique opportunity to canvass their neighborhoods and distribute samples of scents as rewards and effort-sustaining devices (while downsizing their collections)...

I have to admit that I have a closet perfume-fetish that I paradoxically, do not often indulge in, but that I know is there. A perfume bottle on a great advert, perfume-printed scarves, perfume jewelry usually catch my attention and my already half-won admiring gaze. But I also know that to really indulge in this pleasure one needs to be selective otherwise, it all gets diluted, repetitive and might even become an alarming alternate version to the more commonly occurring crazy cat-lady syndrome, Saint Marie-Madeleine patron-saint of perfumes forbid!...

Barack Obama was elected to be the 44th president of the United States on Tuesday and while no propositions were put forth regarding his program for the future of American fashion design and the importance of a styled look as one of the cements that may help unite a nation, designers are now obviously elated by the election's outcome. And that is not just because they are thinking of social reform right now. That is because Michelle Obama is anticipated to become a fashion icon for women in the US, and probably in the world too, while reactivating hopefully a Kennedy-era type social life in Washington D.C...

Just as I was trying to do a comparison, in my head, of the most typical smells of New York City and Paris, I happened on this article in the Boston Globe which attempts to assess the scents of Boston. More particularly Harry Slatkin of Harry Slakin & Co. was invited to tour the city to give his opinion on the way stores are perfumed, normally to attract customers. And let me tell you how this is important. Only the other day I overheard someone complain about how a section of a store smelled as soon as he approached it. It smelled he said. It smelled of something that was difficult for him to identify. That person literally freaked out and had to leave after a few moments because it was apparently unbearable to him. The people accompanying him were not noticing anything and he seemed even more upset for that fact. The sense of smell can be so visceral...
