A trend that is not completely new in France, but has taken more significance lately is the use of old-fashioned floral scents to perfume all sorts of foodstuffs ranging from pastries and drinks to yoghurts and sugar. Violet and rose scents are especially popular, but offerings can also include, jasmine, lavender or even poppy. Monin offers delicately scented flower syrups and Quai Sud proposes floral sugars.....

There is an article on the Fragonard perfumery in Grasse in the New York Times today: “We are a very small company, and we have the luxury to decide what we want and when we want it,” said Agnès Costa-Webster, who, along with her sisters, Françoise and Anne Costa, now runs the business her great-grandfather, Eugène Fuchs, founded in 1926. “I'll think, ‘Well, that would smell good for men if we mix some woods with some raspberry,' and then I speak with the nose and we start thinking about the name and the packaging. Everything is done following our own soul.”

The Philadelphia Enquirer has an article about the locally-based perfume development company Revelations, which created the new Prince perfume, 3121. Larry J. Couey, the owner of Revelations Perfume & Cosmetics, got the Prince gig by accident. While visiting an agent in Los Angeles in August 2006, Couey overheard a conference call with Prince's former label. The musician's perfume discussions with a larger cosmetics company had broken down, and he wanted to find a smaller independent firm.

Sexy Beast is a line of grooming products for doggies that includes an award-winner signature perfume described as " A unisex blend of bergamot and vanilla-infused musk combined with natural patchouli, mandarin and nutmeg oils." and "a low-alcohol fragrance formulated specifically for a dog's sensitive sense of smell." The bottle was designed by famed designer Karim Rashid (KenzoAmour, Ryoko....).
The concept is still unusual, but not new since it was most recently reactivated by Etienne de Swardt for the fragrances called Oh My Dog! and Oh My Cat! And let us not forget that the Romans loved to scent animals. It retails for $50 and $65. Read more....
Excessive alcohol consumption has been a serious long-standing problem in Russian history. Gorbachev's reform policy for curbing alcohol consumption initiated in 1985 and officially in effect on paper until 1988 was a significant landmark. As the poster shown below demonstrates (date unknown), even alcoholic pregnant women have been a concern. The Russian government has been trying lately to curb the habit again and perfumes as they contain alcohol and people tend to drink them have become a target......

Israeli researchers have succeeded in incorporating aromas of lemon and rose into a new kind of GM tomato. It comes after After My Own Heart, Balmy Days & Sundays, Chemical Bonding, and Derring-Do......

Nick Coleman reports on Prince's new scent 3121 and loves to use overused stereotypes when describing the fragrance. 3121 might smell like one's Grandma or French bordellos, you choose. I think that if he tried harder he could come up with "smells like Grandpa" and "smells like Nevada bordellos" and his readers would find that even more amusing and coherent....but maybe I am just being too optimistic.
Indeed, it seems that It's Not Easy To Make Sense of Prince's New Scent .....
