The Career of YSL Opium, An Interview of Perfumer Mathilde Laurent, Rose in Perfumery {The 5fth Sense in the News}

Opium.png

L'Express magazine regularly features articles on perfumes and perfumery (in French). I am catching up and calling your attention to these three last pieces:

Guillaume Crouzet writes about Opium by Yves Saint Laurent. 30 years later it is still alive and kicking. There is a diaporama you can leaf through during which you can also listen to a poem written by YSL.

Les Trente "Glorieuses" d'Opium........

Truffles, Black and White {The 5th Sense in the News}

truffles.jpg

Here's a great article on truffles. Truffle accords are also used in perfumery such as in Une Rose by Frederic Malle, Black Orchid and Noir de Noir (black truffle) by Tom Ford, and Sienne L'Hiver (white truffle) by Eau d'Italie Le Sirenuse.

"Both Black Périgord and White Alba truffles can transform what would otherwise be a mere culinary masterpiece into a quasi mystical dining experience.[...].......

A New Generation of Perfumey Roses {The 5th Sense in the News}

LaRose_Stomberg.jpg

A horticulturist from Geneva, Charles Millo, is developing several new species of extra perfumey roses that would be sold solely for their aromas. The idea is to sell a rose as you would a bottle of wine. Just one of these roses tucked in a bouquet would be enough to scent the bouquet itself and the room in which the bouquet is to be found.......

New Nearly Scentless Durian, Left-Handed & Right-Handed Molecules, Masculine Florals, Jeanne D'Arc's Relics Smelled of Vanillin, Religious Perfume Marketing {The 5th Sense in the News}

durian.jpg

The New York Times has an article about a new breed of durian, an equatorial and tropical fruit surrounded by folklore that is famous for its pungent smell and uber-creamy texture. The breeders of the new variety have apparently succeeded in toning down its distinctive aroma. Once you get used to the old-style durian, it's delicious.

An Article on Men's Colognes & Attitudes Towards Perfumes {The 5th Sense in the News}

AndyWarhol_Flowers.jpg

I love this article because the interviewed SA in it innocently yet very accurately defines in a nutshell the art of fragrance which is in essence, derivative, being all about nuances and variations, more like cooking than painting or literature (unless they want to play on variation):

"She  (Sue Vandall, a SA) likes to "push the underdogs" when men come into the store to buy cologne. Vandall said her favorite is Reaction by Kenneth Cole and she compared the scent with Sean John, which is one of the best-selling colognes. They are similar but also very different (my emphasis)."

Cypriot_Perfumes.jpg

Here's a new travel destination for perfume lovers:

"The world's oldest perfumes have been found on Cyprus by a team of archaeologists.

The perfumes were scented with extracts of lavender, bay, rosemary, pine or coriander and kept in tiny translucent alabaster bottles. The remaining traces found in Pyrgos, on the south of the island, are more than 4,000 years old".....

Serge Lutens Is Made Commandeur des Arts & des Lettres {The 5th Sense in the News}

Lutens_commandeur.jpg

On Tuesday February 27th 2007 at the Ministry of Culture, Serge Lutens entered the ordre des Arts et des Lettres as a Commandeur in recognition of his life-long pursuit of beauty and art and contribution to the art of perfumery.

Serge Lutens said that "Beauty does not care about morality. It stands as its own moral, its own truth. Many have attempted to pin it down with words, feelings, works or art; but always it escapes and transforms itself beyond our desires and when we think we are holding it, it is already gone"

The Boston Globe has an article about perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, the nose behind the Thierry Mugler coffret inspired by Das Parfum the movie. An Article by Chandler Burr About Les Exclusifs de Chanel {The 5th Sense in the News}

LesExclusifs_Burr.jpg

There is an interesting article by Chandler Burr about Les Exclusifs de Chanel in today's New York Times.

I just wanted to comment that Jacques Polge already drew his inspiration from Coco Chanel's appartment in the past to create Coco, which has a notably different feel from his latest creations.

Also, according to WWD, the celebrity fragrance trend (which is referred to in the article in the NYT as the main competition) will still be quite profitable in the next 2 years but it is already slowing down.

Here is more reading about the new Chanel line with a rare picture of the man behind the Serge Lutens fragrances and now the Chanels. Shall we call him the "éminence grise" of French perfumery?:
