Today Chanel unveiled the full length of their new commercial film starring Oscar-nominated actress Keira Knighley entitled Coco Mademoiselle, directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice; Atonement; The Soloist.) The music of the film is James Brown's It's a Man's Man's World. Knightley portrays a fiercely independent woman whose secret of seduction lies in part in her perfume Coco Mademoiselle. Apparently, Knightley in real life encountered the fragrance before she became the face for it. A long-time aficionada of masculine scents but wanting to graduate to a woman's perfume, a friend recommended Coco Mademoiselle and the actress has worn it ever since, appreciating its masculine undertones. This biographical detail seems to form the basis of the concept for the commercial. The brand this time is almost sending the message that the scent of Coco Mademoiselle is unisex or at the very least as much feminine as endowed with virile qualities...

Ralph Lauren are rejuvenating the image of fragrance Romance with a technicolor, so to speak, advertising campaign set in the lush environment of an Argentinian family estate near Bueno Aires.
The two protagonists in the ad shot by photographer Bruce Weber are real-life husband-and-wife team polo player Nacho Figueras and his wife, photographer Delfina "Delfi" Blaquier whose grandparents own the estate...

Actress Eva Mendes will be the new face of fragrance Angel by Thierry Mugler, one of the most memorable scents to appear towards the end of the 20th century and a current global bestseller (see interview with Pierre Aulas, artistic director at Mugler.) She succeeds her colleague Naomi Watts to hopefully bring back some idea of spice and fire to the franchise, per the brand. “While Naomi Watts’ ethereal beauty embodied the angelic aspect of the fragrance, Thierry Mugler chose to reignite the enticing and explosive dimensions of the fragrance with the sultry Mendes,”...

Two young French actors star in the production. Thomas Dutronc who is also a musician, is the son of actor and musician Jacques Dutronc and singer Françoise Hardy. If you felt like you needed to do a double-take for the new ads featuring Megan Fox for Armani Code Sport, their upcoming fragrance for men in June 2011, you are not the only one. After Marc Jacobs got fully oiled for Bang and in the wake of the porno-trash look which is overtaking Hollywood, we get a confirmation from fashion house Armani that it's okay to buy a perfume which feels like it might be sold with a GWP that is a porn DVD called Midnight by the Pool, Foolin' Around part 2: only for Aquaphiles...

Following up on the annoucement of the new Bulgari Mon Jasmin Noir, here is the advertising for the fragrance which was just unveiled. Kirsten Dunst is posing looking both dressed and naked, depensing on where you look, next to a regal-looking lion and holding a giant bottle of Mon Jasmin Noir. So lush, so baroque, so striking...

We don't know how they tinkered with the tag line of the new Calvin Klein CK One ad campaign, but somehow, it feels like they probably considered saying Underwear...Jeans...Fragrance in a neat chronological progression from inner to outer wear, and that they finally opted for "Jeans...Underwear...Fragrance." Seeing "Underwear" and "Fragrance" next to each other kind of creates a comical effect, which would be less the case if the word "Lingerie" had been spotted instead. Fragrance is still, conventionally, a sign of refinement most of the time. The new and first global campaign for CK One is shaking up perceptions a bit. Next, we might be seeing Jeans...Underwear...Socks...Fragrance...

Thierry Mugler unveiled their new advertising campaign for the men's fragrance A Men featuring South-African athlete Oscar Pistorius. The brand, which is known for its edgy, futuristic and on occasion monumental visual universe, chose the sprinter who lost his two feet because "he opens the way for a new style of modern hero: an atypical personality which asserts itsefl beyond everything one could have imagined - it is in perfect adequacy to the vision of Thierry Mugler."...

In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority have once more shown their clout by banning a recent perfume advert for the flanker to the 1977 fragrance Opium by Yves Saint Laurent called Belle d'Opium (check out the commercial.) The reason for the ban is that the TV commercial reportedly showcases in its choreography two moments alluding to opiate consumption. In the first one, French actress Mélanie Thierry points and caresses the crook of her arm; the ASA think that it is a reference to heroin use. In the second incriminated episode, the actress writhes on the floor of a place which looks like a hammam or mosque (someone should take a closer look at that too and get back to us about the allusive use of sacred places in ads)...

A bit grubby perhaps (a lot; I chose the most realistic and documentary-style picture of the bunch, with streaks of human use) but still bringing a touch of luxe to your ordinary restroom experience is the Eau de Toilette dispenser encountered in a restroom at a rest area in France seemingly confirming the reputation of the country as a nation of perfume addicts...

Heat Rush by Beyoncé is benefiting from extensive coverage on You Tube. First, we are offered a quasi intimate look at a smelling session with Beyoncé in attendance trying to decide which sample of perfume formulation to choose from. "Sunset Cocktail Mod 5" gets the nod from her and it's considered by all as the "risky" one, with an overdose of fruit in it. Then Honorine Blanc, the perfumer who actually composed the fragrance or most of it, is interviewed explaining some of the creative process. For her, "...fragrance can create what you call a second life, what you would like to be without the rules of society." Finally, we get the new commercial for the perfume which has been sanitized compared to the one for Heat. Not that there was really anything wrong with the latter, but some outrage poured from some quarters and it looks like the brand has had to watch for supposedly out-of-control sensuality. Yep, this time, it does look much more "tasteful" and gauzy. As the French would say, "Cachez-moi ce sein que je ne saurais voir" (private national and literary joke)....

An oldie but a goodie. In 1995, Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed a Star-Wars-, Blade-Runner-inspired commercial for the perfume Jean-Paul Gaultier now known as Classique by Jean-Paul Gaultier (1993). The ad is entitled "Parfum Esprit."
One of the lines said by the grand-motherly figure (the fragrance is in part inspired by JPG's own grand-mother) is "Je le sens," which means both "I feel his presence" and "I smell it." It's a creative take on fragrance advertising; it is visually provocative without being hard-core, soft-porn or violent or aspirational, four of the commonly seen visual range of stimuli one discovers in publicity images...
