Sculptural Chanel No. 5 Fronts the Musée d'Orsay for its 90th Anniversary {Perfume Images & Ads}

I think it was last month that I was riding past the Musée d'Orsay in a taxi cab when I noticed a giant advertising canvas featuring Kate Moss as the face of Parisienne by Yves Saint Laurent on the side of the building facing the Seine river. This month, it's the turn of Chanel No. 5 which is filling the same choice spot, one of the most spectacular showcasings for an advertising billboard you could find in the capital city. It makes the advert feel like it is part of the Parisian landscape and confers it immediate monumentality....

Natalie Portman Takes a Nude Pose for Miss Dior Chérie {Perfume Images & Ads}

The full ad for the new campaign for Miss Dior Chérie featuring Natalie Portman has been unveiled. Well, let me rephrase that. A few more inches of it have been offered to appreciative public viewing since last time. In it, the actress strikes more clearly a full-monthy nude pose (we are invited to imagine that at least), one which has been popular lately in Guerlain fragrance adverts, a brand which is also part of the LVMH luxury group incidentally....

Dirty English: The Other Ad {Perfume Images & Adverts}

By reader's request and because we aim to please on The Scented Salamander, here is "the other ad" for one of the good gentlemen's juices, Dirty English by Juicy Couture (the first ad is here and the review here.) This is also an opportunity to remember the fragrances worth remembering and go beyond a statement like "It's so 2008!"

Guerlain Crystal Bee Bottle: Perfume Eye-Candy of the Day {Fragrance Images & Ads}

Last fall in 2010, Guerlain issued a sumptious crystal luxury Bee bottle created by Baccarat. It was edited in 47 copies and displayed in the Guerlain boutique windows in Paris. Harrods also advertized it. They can still be seen as of January 2011 as part of the dazzling Holiday displays. According to Sylvaine Delacourte, Director of Fragrance Development at Guerlain, by October 2010, all the flacons had already been called for by collectors.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the brand's landmark building, Elizabeth Arden have launched a new 100th anniversary / 100ème Anniversaire Red Door Edition for the perfume described as a "sensuous and sophisticated mélange of rare florals." The jus does not budge but the color of the flacon and sleeve becomes a deeper blood-pigeon red ruby....

New Advert for Dana English Leather Does Not Exactly Hit the Subtle Spot {Perfume Images & Ads}

One way to revive the classics is by making them look cooler. Here the new advert for English Leather by Dana initially released in 1949 deliberately plays with distanced tool-itude and a fratboy type of humor. Did they go overboard with all that cool? "All our men wear English Leather. Or they wear nothing at all." And pornography always sells, "Touch the wood." We think they are trying to imitate the Axe Body Spray ads, only with more wood panneling and a wooden cap to match.

Perfumer Gilles Romey Talks about Coffee {Perfume Images & Ads}

In this 2001 commercial for a French brand of coffee, a parfumeur-créateur, Gilles Romey, who created Rocabar by Hermès and Rose de Nuit by Serge Lutens among others is showcased talking about the aromas of a morning brew.

It is not commonplace to see a perfumer appear in the eye of the public as they are more often than not men and women of the shadows (less so today though), but it happened in 2001 already...

When the Parisian Metro Smelled of Carnation in 1959 {Perfume Images & Ads}

L'Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA) holds quite a reserve of perfumes reels. In this one, you can watch a segment on the Parisian metro filmed in 1959 where a journalist, Michel Péricard, asks an RATP engineer, M. Mamier, about the latest olfactive innovation created for the comfort of passengers. On line 1, a scent of carnation is sprayed every 6 trains, while on line 4 they decided to diffuse pine essence. A passenger comments that he prefers the new scent to that of human sweat. The journalist asks if per chance the station Jasmine would smell of jasmine and Porte des Lilas of lilac. But no, there would have to be too many samples. Today in 2010, the metro is scented with the perfume of madeleine, a fragrance devised by nose Pierre Nuyens as in a Proustian homage and which also reveals the contemporary taste for gourmand fragrances...

Dolce & Gabbana The One Gentleman: "And in the end it's better to be the one" {Perfume Images & Ads}

Dolce & Gabbana released the TV commercial for their latest masculine fragrance titled The One Gentleman. Spokesperson Matthew McConaughey continues to front this folllow-up to Dolce & Gabbana The One (2008.)

The movie looks like a shortcut taken through La Dolce Vita with a McConaughey strangely able to morph from an impression of himself into a tinge of Marcello Mastroianni, then Paul Newman, then himself as curiously photoshopped for the print ad...
