Lancôme Trésor in Love the Commercial: So Trésor, So Romantic! {Perfume Images & Ads}

tresor-in-love-ad.jpg

T-letter-Erte-B.jpgThe new commercial for the just-released flanker to Trésor (1990), Trésor in Love, is fronted by the daughter of Isabella Rossellini, Elettra Wiedemann. How could one forget the images that contributed to the success of the original fragrance? (see video after the jump). Just like Paris started to smell of Trésor in almost every one of its corners then, the city has still remained faithful to one of its favorite perfumes. I not infrequently smell the sillage of Trésor in a staircase, on a street, in the passage of women. It is one of those perfumes that sign an absence even long minutes after a person has left. The newer version is lighter, more transparent and luminous it seems (from the cap) and I have not tested it properly on skin etc. yet but the new commercial also relies on this idea of a presence-absence which is right on the dot in the case of the original...

The Creative Process Behind Tony Sirico Paolo Per Uomo: "I'll Say it's the French Guy's Fault" {Perfume Images & Ads}

Tony-Sirico-IFF.jpg

I-Letter-TSS-4.jpgI have been wanting to smell Tony Sirico Paolo per Uomo which came out in 2008 (yes, I do have a long view of things) and meanwhile found this behind-the-scenes footage that looks like a DVD extra for The Sopranos series that could have been entitled "the French perfumer who almost messed up Tony's cologne but finally got it right." The creative team jokes around the Paulie character: "I'll say it's the French guy's fault." The nose behind Paolo per Uomo is Laurent le Guernec of IFF and it took him a rather quick 15 tries to get it right for Tony...

Hermès' New Print Advertising for Voyage {Perfume Images and Ads}

Voyage-Hermes-ad-print-B.jpg

Above is the latest version of the print advert for Voyage on which Hermès was still recently working to perfect it.

The house's advertising signature, in fact that of Eric Valli, is to create enigmatic, arresting imagery on a naturalistic, abstract background where a sense of the force of the elements is stressed. They are quite spectacular: you can see a man in the middle of the desert, a siren in the middle of the sea, a husky dog by an igloo made out of Hermès scarves...

Two Scented Toilet Paper Commercials in the Style of Jacques Demy {Perfume Images & Ads}

demoiselles-rochefort.jpg
Here are two funny French commercials from the 1980s for the scented toilet paper brand "Le trèfle parfumé" (scented clover) shot in pastel colors and offering parodies of the popular Jacques Demy musicals such as Les demoiselles de Rochefort and Les Parapluies de Cherbourg.

It's not because it's just toilet paper that you can't rhapsodize about the perfume notes...

Etat Libre d'Orange Creates Advertising Visual for Tilda Swinton Scent {Perfume Ads} {Fragrance News}

tilda-swinton-ad.jpg
It is not in the habit of a confidential niche perfume house to devote much time, energy, and finances to setting up an advertising campaign. More often than not their motto seems to be: the jus, only the jus! Niche perfumery bottles, for proof, seem to take pride in their minimalism, which does not mean necessarily that they come cheap, but they usually remain imperturbably the same throughout the launches of different creations thus saving funds on the bottle designing front.

In the case however of the upcoming Like This by Tilda Swinton / Etat Libre d'Orange which launches this weekend in Paris, the label decided to take exception to this art-for-art rule of thumb and feature the actress to create a visual impact...

Loewe Aire Loco TV Commercial: Nuttily Yours

aire-loco-loewe.jpg
For their perfume Aire Loco which was launched in the fall of 2009, Loewe designed an advertising campaign which relies on an elaborate atmospheric build-up and a mild sense of surreal insanity. Love that Spanish oniric strain which is like a disguised homage to painter Goya...

Dior in Burned Wood Chic {Perfume Images and Adverts}

dior_burned_wood.jpgDesigner Dzmitry Samal is proposing that we take a look at his new design: a bottle of Dior men's perfume dressed with a "Burned Wood Chic" outfit/casing.

The "burned" part makes me think of the design for the fragrance Nasomatto Black Afgano, but the charring here has been amplified and made to look sculptural rather than just textural. The "wood" part evokes the wooden or rather woodsy-looking limited-edition flacons for Issey Miyake L'Eau. The design is not original but it looks like it must have overcome a number of technical difficulties making it a more complex and perfected application of the same idea.

If I receive news of a third charred-wood perfume bottle, I'll have to call it a trend...

CK One Vending Machines in the Parisian Metro: The Film {Perfume Images and Ads}

ckone-vending-machine.jpg
Calvin Klein have been using a 15 ml size of CK One sold in vending machines in the Metro and elsewhere in Paris to promote the scent and the brand. You can watch a short film about the campaign featuring the pocket stores after the jump.

Perfume vending machines already existed in the past. At one time, even Chanel No5 now the epitome of chic was sold in the USA thanks to such devices and currently Sephora is also making use of beauty vending machines...

Martin Scorsese Directs New Chanel Men's Fragrance Commercial {Fragrance News} {Perfume Images & Adverts}

chanel-scorsese-ulliel.jpg
Initially reported by Dossier Journal who got the scoop thanks to in-the-field alertness walking by Moto in Brooklyn, it is now confirmed that the greatest amongst the greats Martin Scorsese will apply some or all of his genius to the new Chanel men's fragrance ad to debut in September 2010.  Chanel have reportedly been pursuing this particular collaboration for quite some time.

Andrea d'Avack president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauté invoked the French notion of "supplément d'âme" (an intangible quality which literally translates as supplement of soul) to explain their constant policy to recruit great movie directors to film their perfume commercials...

La Parfumerie Violet by Giuseppe De Nittis in 1880 {Perfume Images}

giuseppe-de-nittis-parfumerie-violet-1880.jpg
A painting by Giuseppe De Nittis depicting La Parfumerie Violet, Boulevard des Capucines in 1880.

The Italian painter is a lesser known but very interesting representative of the movement of impressionism who has left some breathtakingly beautiful images of Paris in which characters seem to be at once photographied and rendered more poetically evocative. It is uncanny to see how De Nittis is able to capture movement and the tension of life even when his subjects are seated and moving little.

 De Nittis had an eye for those little details that make up the texture of daily life...

Versace Versus (2010): Fronted by Lara Stone & Inspired by Brigitte Bardot {New Perfume} {Fragrance Images & Ads}

lara-stone-versus-versace-B.jpg
Versace under the helm of Donatella Versace will pump new life into the Versus collection of fragrances with a new perfume called Versus.

An original Versus scent was launched in 1991 followed by Versus Donna in 1992. Over the years the label expanded but the last time a Versus fragrance was introduced was 2003 with Versus Time for Action. Donatella Versace's goal was to make the scent feel addictive,

"I worked closely on the fragrance to create a perfume that leaves you with the desire of wanting more and more,"...
