 One way to convey the idea that fragrance is not just an assemblage of odoriferous molecules but a work of art created by people with imagination and vision is to accompany the perfume with a body of visual works. Since most people are more attuned to visual cues than to olfactory ones, it all makes things much clearer. This is exactly what Penhaligon's have done for their latest fragrance, Sartorial, which is inspired by the smells of the workrooms of Norton and Sons on Savile Row. You thought Savile Row equals tradition? You thought Charming and old-fashioned? Wait until you see the short stop-motion film directed by Quentin Jones and featuring perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, the author of the scent, as well as a few other compradores: it is very arty. It puts some distance with the idea that Norton and Sons is primarily steeped in 19th century history. According to the press release, "Filmed

 Although one may have more reservations about the jus itself, a new flanker to the classic Opium by Yves Saint Laurent, the commercial for the latest Belle d'Opium (Opium Belle) (see also here, here and here) is yet another example of less than superficial interpretation skills put in practice in the service of perfume marketing by a professional thespian (see also Jude Law for Dior) and not just a pretty face, here French actress Mélanie Thierry dancing on a choreography created by Akram Khan.  More pink and heart shapes today, coincidentally or not, after our review of Ooh La La by Victoria's Secret. Love of Pink by Lacoste was introduced in 2009. It is a fruity-floral eau de toilette which includes notes of blood orange, passion fruit, lemon zest, pink magnolia, jasmine, white cedar wood, vanilla, musk.  The latest John Galliano women's fragrance launched yesterday on September 13, 2010 in Paris at historic restaurant Lapérouse facing the Seine in the 6th arrondissement. Outside the culinary hot spot which had been commandeered for the perfume launch, there was a huge open-sided bus to host a concert by The Pretty Reckless. Momsen performed with her band that evening singing Factory Girl, Make me wanna die, Since you're gone. If you were following her tweets you would have got the invitation to meet up at the crossroad of the Quai des Grands Augustins and the rue des Grands Augustins. The new fragrance has started to be unveiled. The Eau de Toilette is called Parlez-moi d'amour (lit. Talk to me about love) and is aiming a younger demographic than the eponymous John Galliano edp and edt. But as Galliano quickly added, there is no age limit for true love...

 Following up on the Eau de Parfum version of Guerlain Idylle is a new, fresher and greener take on the jus available in Eau de Toilette concentration this fall. The advertising featuring young French actress Nora Arzeneder has also been revamped, literally. Arzedener casts off her ingénue poses (see previous ad too) and looks much sultrier, khol-eyed and voluptuous in it, not to mention the fact that a little more bare skin was deemed appropriate for the new introduction...

 The Beckhams have expanded their franchise of scents with a new duo called Intimately Yours Women & Men. In keeping with the original inspiration of their fragrance venture, which is to pretend to allow the media to open a special vista onto their couple's intimacy, they reenact for us what might be a typical quickie-in-the-elevator for them, in-between two public commitments, the bane of a celebrity's life. Despite the aim of proposing a suggestive advertising, the images remains just that, lightly suggestive rather than constituting a heroic piece of anthology.  After announcing the teaser for the new ad campaign for Dior Homme cologne signed by director Guy Ritchie, here is finally the full commercial made to look like a feature movie, starring Jude Law. I don't know if one day they will dare in a fit of hubris to put out a 2-hour film built around a fragrance, but perfume commercials lately are clearly itching to be much, much more than a jingle. Real actors are asked to play in these ads and they bring their inner lives and gravitas to the commercial reel. It is amazing really to think of their professionalism when you realize that they are asked to concentrate on selling a scent, or perhaps better said, the story of a scent. No doubt that big budgets are there to inspire respect for the medium. In "Dior Homme", which lasts more than 5 minutes, one can notice that the dialogue structure of the movie is complex and layered. I think that it is really a step further in the direction of proposing little art pieces to go with the image and experience of a perfume. Please note also that Michaela Kocianova is made to put on some Dior Homme thereby alluding to the real-world gender-bending quality of the fragrance, beyond the erotic game the two lovers play...

 Dior have released a teaser for their upcoming new fragrance ad campaign for Dior Homme (2005), an elegant root-y iris composition by perfumer Olivier Polge. Jude Law is the face of the cologne in a film directed by Guy Ritchie bathed in blue, reminiscent of the upcoming, pre-advertised Chanel Bleu de Chanel film directed by Martin Scorsese. At the same time, the color blue for Dior recalls their Lady with a blue bag extravaganza filmed in Shanghai with Marion Cotillard. The next unveiling will take place on August 18, 2010.
