Boss-Bottled-Night-Ryan-Reynolds.jpgHugo Boss have introduced a new fragrance for men called Boss Bottled. Night. The advertising campaign is fronted by actor Ryan Reynolds, Mr. Scarlett Johansson, who recently co-starred with actress Sandra Bullock in The Proposal. When invited to be the icon for the cologne, the actor said,

"Boss is a brand that not only represents classic style and sophistication, but inspires men to work hard, embrace opportunities and strive for success in all aspects of their lives, I'm honored Boss invited me to be the face of its new men's fragrance."...

The Perfume which Evelyn Nesbit Wore and The One She Advertised {Celebrity Fragrance} {Beauty Notes - Icons}

evelyn-nesbit.jpg
While posting about how men prefer natural-looking women, I had to remember and pay homage to natural beauty Evelyn Nesbit (1884-1967) whose turn-of-the-20th-century pictures are for many of them strangely contemporary in feel. Abundantly photographed in an era when taking pictures was still relatively complicated, she appears in some of her portraits as the epitome of unadorned beauty, just a few steps away from the threshold of an agrestic farm. On others, she is more like a regular Belle Epoque and Gilded Age studio belle.

On the cover of the book that biographer Paula Uruburu consecrated to her, American Eve, Nesbit appears with flowing long hair, no or very little makeup that one can tell and still striking by contemporary standards. One of the defining traits of the "it-girl" then and now seems to be the manner in which one is able to come across as effortlessly beautiful and natural.

It might be more the lineage that gave Kate Moss rather than the one which created Greta Garbo, the latter which inspired in her times a more sophisticated and hieratic sphinx-like look beginning with the vogue for architecturally structured and enigmatic eyebrows.

So, what did the most beautiful woman in America wear at the height of her beguiling influence?...

Jennifer Aniston Eau de Parfum (2010) Take 2: The Lifestyle Fragrance Review {Perfume Shorts}

jennifer-aniston-lolavie-2-B.jpg
The thought struck me today (after nearly 4 1/2 years of blogging, cough, cough; the simplest things are the hardest, is my defense. It once took me 3 months to finally devise a "course lecture" on fragrance for 4 to 5 year-old toddlers, so I know or I think I know) that it might be a good idea to offer a doublet review of a particular fragrance for people who care less about context and more about practical tips, wearability and matters of personal taste. I had been toying with the idea more or less and suddenly, it all became crystal clear: I just need to focus on the wearability factor and social-occasions questions for the doublet review which I usually don't find room for in my longer reviews.

Notes: citrus grove accord, rose water / night blooming jasmine, wild violets, Amazon lily / sensual musk, golden amber, sandalwood.

Lifestyle-wise, I would qualify the new Jennifer Aniston perfume (longer review here) as an elegant, sunny and clean, but not-too-clean clean fragrance which succeeds in bringing together a certain old-world charm and clean American feel. Jasmine lovers should check it out as it's a well-balanced, medium-grade jasmine scent which feels neither too raunchy-animalic nor too girly-floral. It's a bit transparent but without feeling aqueous...

Jennifer Aniston EDP (2010): Remake Made in Hollywood {Perfume Review & Musings} {Celebrity Fragrance}

jennifer-aniston-1B.JPG
jennifer-aniston-4.jpg
If you don't have the time to peruse a long review, there's a short, more practical Lifestyle-oriented version of it here.

Jennifer Aniston Eau de Parfum has been one of the most anticipated celebrity perfumes by the internet in part due to tabloid-worthy material regarding her personal life around the Brangelina axis of attention as well as her own, rapid fluctuations and speculations surrounding the name of her debut perfume and finally, the preview tagline coined by Aniston herself who gave the new fragrance as being "a nonperfume perfume." Mmmm, interesting.

As an observer of the perfume scene, one can only be struck in the case of this launch with the constant discrepancy appearing between discourse and actual juice as if Jennifer Aniston had had time to change her mind 50 times before finally settling on the opposite of what she claimed she would do. Thus the quirky, inscrutable "Lolavie" is replaced by the much more sedate and self-evident "Jennifer Aniston eau de parfum" and the "nonperfume perfume", it turns out, seems to be laughing somewhat at its own description. Even the official description of the fragrance is rather misleading, calling attention to the chasm existing between the copy writer's and the perfumer's languages. In the end though, Aniston apparently wholly embraces the result, saying '...it's turned out to be an extension of myself as opposed to slapping my name on something."

JF EDP could get our prize for most confusing, complicated and discrepant fragrance launch so far this year. Even Aniston's own descriptions of the perfume culled from a Women's Wear Daily interview at the time the perfume was announced as Lolavie are like hearing someone talk past the composition: "floral, but not too flowery," and "..most of all I wanted it to smell natural" and "I am not a big perfume-y fragrance fan" are not exactly what comes to mind when smelling the perfume -- well, perhaps the first descriptor is still defensible, but the second and third ones, hardly.

Notes: citrus grove accord, rose water / night blooming jasmine, wild violets, Amazon lily / sensual musk, golden amber, sandalwood....

Beyoncé Heat Ultimate Elixir (2010) {New Perfume} {Celebrity Fragrance}

beyonce-heat-ultimate-elixir.jpg
Singer Beyoncé Knowles will follow up on the success of her debut fragrance launch Heat (review here) with a new limited-edition flanker to be introduced in September 2010 called Heat Ultimate Elixir by Beyoncé. The concentration is dubbed a "parfum" one, the highest level of jus concentration in principle although since the term is uncertified it can lead to interpretative dosages and intensity-effects, especially as one can suspect, for a 1.7 fl. oz quantity...

Miller Harris at the White House, in Perfumed Spirit Form {Fragrance News} {Celebrity Scents}

miller-harris-obama-candles.jpg
London-based Miller Harris are bouncing with joy today as the news have spread in national newspapers that four of their scented candles were selected by wife of British Prime Minister Samantha Cameron to offer to First Lady Michelle Obama.

Samantha Cameron is well-known in the UK for her sense of style and her taste developed formerly also as an artistic director for luxury stationary brand Smythson. It's further support for Miller Harris that she really does know a thing or two about style and follows her own advice instead of asking a shopping assistant to do the selection (please note that she could have also selected the Vogue pick, Figue Amère.)

So what were the Four Chosen Ones, in case you would like to emulate both 10 Downing Street and the White House to perfume your home?...

Aniston says Last Minute Change of Name Lolavie due to Lola by Marc Jacobs {Fragrance News} {Celebrity Perfume}

jennifer-aniston-scent.jpg©Mike Marsland, cropped

Jennifer Aniston, when asked during the launch of her debut scent at Harrods by Reuters why it is that she changed the name of her fragrance at the eleventh hour (not for the first time though), answered that this is due to the presence of another scent on the market [Lola by Marc Jacobs], which was launched last year in August 2009 in the US and September 2009 internationally. In March 2010 discussions about the name of her scent started being publicized with "Aniston" appearing as a candidate favored by the actress...

Katy Perry Purr (2010): California Gurls Meet Catwoman {New Fragrance} (Celebrity Perfume}

Katy-Perry-B.jpg
Pop singer Katy Perry will launch her debut signature fragrance in November 2010. It is called Purr and is inspired by a sartorial accessory, a catwoman suit of hers, as well as clearly the oh-so-fun over-the-top candy-park theme of her song California Gurls which gives its title to her first single album to be introduced in August (video after the jump.) Perry, it turns out, is no novice when it comes to perfume, personally owning at least 50 bottles of fragrance. She also has precise ideas about what she likes promising that after Purr there will perfumes based on her favorites fruits. When you look at the video of California Gurls, you get a sense it's not just about candy and fruits but about a whole coherent aesthetics.

"I'm very inspired by the Japanese world and all things completely cute," she said. "All things edible for me are also intriguing. So if there are little dancing strawberries, I will be happy. Peppermint is cute; cotton candy is adorable. We like to keep it cute and classy,"...

Latest Update on Jennifer Aniston's Fragrance's Name: It's Now Called "The Debut Fragrance" {Perfume News} {Celebrity Fragrance}

jennifer-aniston-X.jpg
© P. Le Segretain

In the latest twist concerning Jennifer Aniston's perfume, we learn via Harrods newsletter this time that it's now been titled on their website "The Debut Fragrance." If they had put back "Lolavie" after telling us it was not called that (anymore), we would have felt like this was a really mad circus.

As it is, it just reveals an inordinately high level of hesitation and upheaval over the name of the debut fragrance by Jennifer Aniston. The debate went public instead of being classically discussed behind closed corporate doors, probably in part to build publicity and get feedback. The result, the appearance of flip-flopping until the last minute, may be the slight downside to this approach which even in the Internet age looks extraordinarily "of the minute"...

Britney Spears Unveils Teaser for Radiance (2010) {New Fragrance} {Celebrity Perfume}

britney-spears-radiance.jpgSinger Britney Spears will release a new fragrance from September 2010 called Radiance following up on last year's Circus Fantasy. It will be her ninth perfume.The look of the packaging is novel; there's been an effort to think outside of the box, so to speak, to renew our vision of the Britney Spears fragrance franchise. See teaser video after the jump...

Lolavie is Out, Jennifer Aniston is In: Name-Change Shocker, or Not {Fragrance News} {New Perfume} {Celebrity Scent}

jennifer-aniston-fragrance-B.jpgIn interesting - no, wait, make that earth-shattering fragrance-onomastics news, we learn through the press office of Harrods of London that the new perfume by Jennifer Aniston to launch tomorrow at the department store is not called Lolavie anymore but simply Jennifer Aniston.

If you care to remember, there had been prolonged media coverage of the name of the fragrance which started by being floated as maybe going to be "Aniston" then went on to be Lola Vie, then Lolavie (we're simplifying.) Was this all a big Jen joke on us? Fortunately, because suddenly I am feeling a bit like "did this really happen or did I just dream it?" there is still a visual of the fragrance on the blog with the name "Lovavie" emblazoned across it...

Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights (2010): American Gum-Popping Princess {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Fragrance} {Celebrity Scents}

JS-Fancy Nights-B.jpg

Fancy Nights by Jessica Simpson is the third fragrance by the pop star following Fancy (2008) and Fancy Love (2009.) This time around, we were forewarned that the perfume would be particularly sensual. While I cannot deny the work on a deepening of sensual accords, what strikes me even more than this velvetier atmosphere are rarer things such as a sense of humor and a certain spirit of anti-conformism. Labeled as a spicy floral oriental, Fancy Nights is one of those fragrances that are not just an inert addition of notes that will smell pretty like an image. It reveals a certain psychological depth and dynamism.

Right along the material perfume notes of citrusy bergamot, papyrus, patchouli, Bulgarian red rose, Night Blooming Jasmine, creamy vanilla, soft sandalwood, amber and oakmoss, you'd need to write: a good dose of humor, playfulness, a spirit of independence. I am almost tempted to use the word "wit" but it wouldn't fit completely as I do not sense that indispensable pinch of cynicism that you need to add to shake it and get wit.

This is not the perfume made by someone observing Jessica Simpson from a distance, Oscar-Wilde-like, pulling a well-rehearsed line written on a folded paper from his pocket - Wilde was a dreadful histrion and left nothing to chance - but rather a fresh pop art portrait of Jessica Simpson painted by perfumer Steve de Mercado, which additionally captures well a more general American pop-culture ambiance. This may sound odd, but to me, there is very much of an Independence-Day accord in this perfume...

Scoop: There is Actually a Lady Gaga's Perfume Trademark: Bad Romance {Fragrance News}

lady_gaga___bad_romance_by_battered_rose.jpg

bad-romance-trademark.jpg
Thanks to a tip from fellow blogger Lucian James of Agendainc.com, who picked up on our tone of cautious skepticism in our last post about the denial of a Lady Gaga perfume - which we said might or might not be a project for real - we got news through them that Lady Gaga has in fact trademarked the name "Bad Romance" in the category "Fragrances, perfumery, makeup, personal care products including lotions, soaps and bath products..."
