ABC's daytime drama, All My Children, is turning a soap opera into a serialized perfume ad copy and a fragrance, Charm!, into a permanent advertising jingle for its show. To add to the emotional quotient, a romance novel also entitled Charm! All My Children pops out of the screen and can become yours too for the asking. Both the perfume and the novel are launched by a fictional character in the series, Kendall Hart played by Alicia Minshew, who is at the head of a cosmetics company and in the throes of developing a scent while in need of expressing her angst on the white page, "Avery Wilkins is in her prime. She's 30 years old, living in Manhattan, beautiful, smart, and the head of her own cosmetics company, Flair. But her enviable exterior hides deep heartache and painful secrets. Determined to launch a successful perfume, and hopeful that her relationship with handsome and supportive Marcus is getting serious, Avery is chasing her dreams--and running from her traumatic past." Believe it or not, it is on the best-seller list of the New York Times, at # 15. More of the same ragoût here...

Mac Fafi meets and cross-breeds with Isabela Capeto while tapping into Coty's early tradition of novelty fragrances. Add a pinch of Avon flair too. Then also note the pluri-ethnic feel, with the advert featuring a blond model with blue eyes with a discreet Geisha look and Harajuku fashion-sense, as references to Japanese culture. But there is more. Singer Gwen Stefani is partnering up once more with Coty to launch this time a line of 5 new fragrances called Harajuku Lovers inspired both by her personal interest in Japanese pop culture and street fashion, as well as her perceptions of her 4 back-up singers in real life. The five new perfumes are christened Love, Lil' Angel, Music, Baby after the stage-names of her back-up "Harajuku Girls", and G for Gwen Stefani herself although she has purposefully decided not to appear on the adverts for the collection. The real names of the Harajuku girls are Maya Chino, Jennifer Kita, Rino Nakasone, and Mayuko Kitayama. You can find more fun paraphernalia about them on the Harajuku Lovers site...

The Scoop: Pop singer and actress Jessica Simpson will launch her debut signature fragrance on August 15, 2008. It is called Fancy. Love the black-and-white-cinema effect of this image (the ad is not released yet; it is the PR image communication image for now. This is the initial teaser folks). Very iconic. Think Marylin Monroe in the Misfits, the all-American open road etc. They are cultivating her America's sweetheart image.....

Breaking news: actor Patrick Dempsey well-known for his role in Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Derek Shepherd has signed a multi-year contract with Avon to be the face of a new men's fragrance scheduled to launch in November of 2008. “This will be arguably the strongest franchise in the company’s history,” said Andrea Jung, chairman and chief executive officer of Avon." Unforgivable Black and Unforgivable Woman Black by Sean John are the two latest additions to the Sean John perfume portfolio. His debut scent was Unforgivable for Men in 2006 which was a commercial success earning the brand $150 million globally. Last year Sean Diddy Combs also designed a women's version of Unforgivable, which he noted had nothing to do with the original men's version except for a subtle "synergy note" of bergamot as he wanted the feminine scent to stand on its own. He told Women's Wear Daily,
"I didn't want to take the easy way out as far as just making a feminine version of the men's. Women and men are totally different. I like a woman to smell like a woman, and a man to smell like a man."
After everyone has had time to take in this statement and digest it, we can point out that this time the Black duo takes the synergy route that was rejected the first time around. The two perfumes are very much two birds of the same feather but this time they seem to belong to one of those species of birds where the male's plumage is more colorful than the female's one due to male active sexual competition over female mates......

The new Fabulosity by Baby Phat © Wireimage
Kimora Lee Simmons launched her third fragrance with Coty under the label Baby Phat following Goddess and Golden Goddess; it is called Fabulosity, a key notion for Simmons and which is also the title of an advice book she has written. The perfume which is said to be "more explosive and passionate" than the Goddess perfumes was created by perfumer Yann Vasnier of Givaudan. It is described as a fruity oriental with top notes said to be "addictive" and "explosive" (again!) according to Cosmetic World......

There is a nice interview with Jean Paul Gaultier in L'Express on the occasion of the launch of his Monsieur line of beauty products, including his first ever - reportedly this is how they present it - Eau de Cologne called Eau du Matin. "Monsieur" was chosen as a name for the line because the French designer believes in the return of Dandysm. Gaultier thinks that ideas about masculine beauty and personal care started to evolve back in the 1970s thanks to the hippies and later rock stars like David Bowie and Boy George.....

Andy Warhol exclaimed one day, "My favorite smell is the first smell of spring in New York". With that, Union Square the latest Bond No. 9 in the Andy Warhol collection starts like a fresh spring bouquet redolent with visions of flowers colored like pastel Easter eggs and then puts on a light creamy white Chinchilla wrap around its shoulders to assuage the chill of too much sappiness too early. The textile of this impression weaves discreet floral motifs intertwined with soft green grassy accents.
Union Square, despite the psychedelic colorings of the Flower silkscreen paintings by Andy Warhol, which inspired it and which are reproduced on the bottles in all of their 10 glorious colorful variations is an ode sung to softness and restraint, perhaps timidity even, an unexpected interpretation of the universe of an artist known for its eccentricity and use of arresting colors and volumes. But the truth is that Warhol’s favorite scent is known to have been that of the violet, whose characteristic delicacy reveals another side of Warhol, the shy one. If we look at it from that angle, the bottle becomes Warhol’s outer persona while the perfume itself or “jus” as it is sometimes called in the industry offers a glimpse into his interiority......

Coty have announced that they will launch a signature perfume fronted and developed by Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry in the spring of 2009. Not only is this news a consolidation of the celebrity perfume trend, but even more significantly perhaps it also shows how fragrance and beauty brands are reaching out to women from minority communities (see recent news about Shakira) with the more recent inclusions of women with African-American ancestry in the stables of celebrities that sell perfumes (see Avon Imari with Jennifer Hudson, Armani Diamonds with Beyoncé Knowles and the projected scent by Tom Ford fronted by Erykah Badu, still to be confirmed). Even pionneer of the new generation of celebrity fragrances in the 21st century JLo has picked up on this trend by accentuating the importance of her Hispanic heritage with her latest fragrance named with a Spanish name, Deseo, a facet of her perfumes that had not been explicitly stressed before.....
