Like This, Tilda Swinton by Etat Libre d'Orange (2010): Aphrodisiac Pumpkin {Perfume Review} {Celebrity Fragrance}

Actress Tilda Swinton just launched her debut signature perfume called Like This, Tilda Swinton last weekend in Paris. The event took place at the boutique of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs on Saturday March 13th, 2010.

The Background Story: How it All Came About

Before the launch took place (please check back for an upcoming perfume-launch post by guest-writer Yasmine), the story of the scent starts with Tilda Swinton deciding one day to look at the world in a slightly different light and to leave a state which she describes herself as one of prolonged "olfactory laziness." In this case, the inspiration came from perfumes worn by people close to her.

The Scottish actress happens to be friends with one of director Pedro Almodovar's fetish actresses, Rossy de Palma, who herself developed a perfume with Etat Libre d'Orange called Eau de Protection (Protective Water) in 2008, one of those confidential, arty-celebrity fragrances which are the purview of niche fragrance houses as the genre is now not confined anymore to the mass-market shelves. A second source for the new-found interest of Tilda Swinton for perfume was the sillage left by her agent who also happened to wear yet another Etat Libre d'Orange scent, Tom of Finland, another celebs scent of sorts (inspired by Tom of Finland's erotic art.)

The dices of fragrance fate were cast in this way and started rolling in the direction of the perfume house both conveniently and naughtily located at 69, rue des Archives in the Marais district in Paris...

Paco Rabanne to Launch Feminine Counterpart to 1 Million, with Dree Hemingway

Dree-Hemingway.jpg© Paco Rabanne

This summer, expect to discover a new feminine pendant to the bad boy of 1 Million by Paco Rabanne, whose finger-snapping helped make the men's fragrance a success. The coumarin-laden oriental scent for men featuring a copper accord has been hovering at the top of the charts since its launch.

From July 2010, the brand will introduce a feminine perfume which is for now only described as the feminine counterpart to 1 Million without any indication as to what its name or composition will be...

Etat Libre d'Orange Creates Advertising Visual for Tilda Swinton Scent {Perfume Ads} {Fragrance News}

tilda-swinton-ad.jpg
It is not in the habit of a confidential niche perfume house to devote much time, energy, and finances to setting up an advertising campaign. More often than not their motto seems to be: the jus, only the jus! Niche perfumery bottles, for proof, seem to take pride in their minimalism, which does not mean necessarily that they come cheap, but they usually remain imperturbably the same throughout the launches of different creations thus saving funds on the bottle designing front.

In the case however of the upcoming Like This by Tilda Swinton / Etat Libre d'Orange which launches this weekend in Paris, the label decided to take exception to this art-for-art rule of thumb and feature the actress to create a visual impact...

Singer Rihanna Turns to the Fans and Internet for Help in Choosing Perfume Name

rihanna-perfume-name.png
A perfume name can make or break a new fragrance or at least this is what one can assume singer Rihanna is thinking as she has been looking assiduously for a good fragrance name and casting her net wide to do so. Jennifer Aniston is currently doing the same thing but relying more on her inner circle.

Initially tempted by Route 22 (Rihanna is 22 years old) she's decided to turn to fans and the internet for feedback. And they have heard her. After reading about her creative block reported by a source who said,

"Although Rihanna wanted to call it Route 22, she is now unsure and is keen to see what fans can come up with."...

More French Celebrities Enter The Perfume Ring: Melanie Thierry and Marc Lavoine + An Hexagonal Retrospective

melanie-thierry-cesar-B.jpgMélanie Thierry just received the César prize for "meilleur espoir feminine" (best up-and-coming female actress).

Although celebrity and perfume do not seem to mesh as well in French culture as in American pop culture, lately an effort has been made by French brands to corral in the charm of celebrities to create perfume consumption lust.

This is not to say that there were never French celebrity perfumes. In fact in the early days of the 20th century, you could find a signature perfume by actor Jean Marais, the lover and friend of Jean Cocteau. Earlier than that Josephine Baker, an adoptive Parisian, had her name not only on cabaret posters but on fragrance bottles....

Jennifer Aniston To Pour Her Anger (lina) into a New Perfume Instead of Drinking It...Just Kidding - Update

Jennifer-Aniston-B.jpg
As reported back in 2007, the rumors then started circulating of a possible upcoming perfume signed by Friends icon Jennifer Aniston. Three years later, it seems that the rumor has been confirmed by a source close to the actress. The romantic comedy cutie has reportedly been working diligently and discreetly for 20 months on a fragrance development project.

Initially, the brand Elizabeth Arden had been attached to the project although Arden said in July 2009 that they were concentrating on beauty products and were not looking to expanding their perfume portfolio. But this does not preclude the carrying-on of a fragrance development underway, if that is the case at all with Elizabeth Arden...

Etat Libre d'Orange Like This by Tilda Swinton (2010) {New Perfume} {Celebrity Fragrance}

Tilda-Swinton-ELO.jpg
Confidential, Paris-based-in-the-Marais-neighborhood perfume house Etat Libre d'Orange will launch, as previously announced, a new perfume whose muse is actress Tilda Swinton, from March 13, 2010 (the dates have been slightly changed)

It is called Like This.

Tilda Swinton herself turned for inspiration to Sufi philosophy and poet Rumi also called Jalal Ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi and Mevlana to chant the meaning of her perfume,

"Like this.

What does your fragrance smell like? Like this.

What does your fragrance feel like? Like this.

What do I do with this fragrance? Like this.

It's an idea that makes me very, very happy
.

Tilda"....

Sarah Jessica Parker SJP NYC (2010): The Big Apple Becomes The Big Strawberry {Perfume Review and Musings} {Celebrity Fragrance}

SJP-NYC-AD.jpg

SJP NYC eau de toilette was developed following the resounding success of the 2008 Sex in the City feature movie which brought in earnings of $500 million globally, and to fill a commercial void. The movie sequel Sex and the City 2 is due out on May 28th, 2010. The producers - it comes down to sniffing good business in this case - regretted that amongst the franchise products which had been commercialized at the time, there had not been a perfume, for lack of time. Sarah Jessica Parker has come to be seen as having more than a passing superficial interest in perfume; we now all know about her personal homemade 3-layer combo scent that was never able to be translated into a commercial fragrance because it's too extreme involving 1 street-vendor musk, Bonne Bell skin musk and Comme des Garçons Avignon Incense. Plus, the idea fits right in with the fashion-fabulous universe of Sex and the City. Sarah Jessica Parker explained the birthing process of SJP NYC, saying,

"We started with this idea that we wanted to create something fun. We wanted to create a party in a bottle and reflect that in the packaging with a real sense of whimsy, fun and joie de vivre. And then we took it from there. Portability and fashion played key roles in the development of the packaging and overall concept."....

Lady Gaga Struts Armani and Prada on Monster Ball Tour {Fashion Notes} - What Perfumes Celebs Love to Wear {Celebrity Fragrances}

lady-gaga-armani-fashion-2-B.jpg
While Lady Gaga is preparing to launch her own fashion label with the support of Versace, she is counting on the talents of Armani and Prada to dress her for her Monster Ball tour. Turning to both Italian designers, she got contrasted propositions. I think we are seeing a trend called Lady Gaga loves Italian Fashion. And who could blame her? It's always been so feminine and sensual a fashion for women...

Perfume-review-logo-3-B.jpg{A fragrance review of Gucci by Gucci Sport pour Homme has been added to the blog!}

Gucci have started to roll out the launch of a new men's perfume meant to complement the mood of Gucci by Gucci pour Homme characterized as a "phenomenal success" by the brand. The new scent is called Gucci by Gucci Sport pour Homme and will continue to be fronted by actor James Franco who contributed to the success of the debut scent (see here and here.) Artistic director Frida Giannini said,

"I don't necessarily link it literally with sports,"... "It's more a sporty state of mind. Meaning, off-duty time and the attitude that comes from being relaxed and carefree."...

Le Parfum Sex Pistols (2010): A French Look and Sniff at British Punk {New Perfume} {Celebrity Fragrance}

le-parfum-sex-pistols.jpgSephora France will exclusively carry a new perfume from May 2010 dedicated to the remembrance of the heyday of the Sex Pistols. It's called Le Parfum Sex Pistols (Sex Pistols:The Perfume) and was announced by Vogue France rather than Vogue UK. It looks like a French cultural project put into perfume on this side of the Euro Star railway rather than emerging from across the channel.

The packaging makes you think a bit of the design of the Etat Libre d'Orange bottles when decorated, which they do for their celebrity fragrances like for Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection and Tom of Finland...

Les Etains du Prince Parfum Napoleon {Celebrity Perfume}

les-etains-du-prince-napoleon-collection.jpg
If you wanted to feel like you were going to meet other partisans of Napoleon Bonaparte and his family, or Bonapartistes, and rendez-vous at a nostalgic political club, there is a perfume for that occasion.

Les Etains du Prince (The Pewter Pieces of the Prince) is a French specialist of military tin figures and copies of historical objects of the Napoleonic era. They also imagined a fragrance, soap and candle created in Grasse which are inspired by the personality of the ex-Emperor of the French. The line is called Collection Parfumée Napoléon...
