Marc Jacobs is preparing to launch a new men's fragrance called Bang from July 30th 2010. It's his first men's cologne since 2002 when the designer introduced Marc Jacobs for Men, a fig-centered composition.
The added twist here, visually speaking, is that Marc Jacobs himself will lend his physical appearance to the advertising campaign for the scent, bringing the celebrity factor to bear on the destinies of the scent. He appeared wearing makeup last year in a nude picture for the 15th anniversary book for Nars (see below).
This year, he will be lying on a silver Mylar bed holding a strategically placed giant bottle of Bang so as not to offend public morality. Tom Ford also thought that the best attention-catching spot to present a bottle of perfume to the public is the crotch and the cleavage. This has been called the Crotch Pose in advertising agencies since then (it's a just a guess.) Jacobs's business partner Robert Duffy is the originator of the advertising concept,
'Marc, you look so great now -- you should be the model for men's
fragrance.' My immediate reaction was, I don't know. But then I came to
see that it made sense. Men's fragrance, unlike women's in a certain
way, is very personal. It's a layer on top of skin -- for women, it can
be like changing a makeup color, but not for men...
One question that people keep asking themselves when they think about buying a celebrity fragrance is how authentic is the affiliation of the celeb to the scent? Did the persons really put anything of themselves in it besides their names? Beyoncé preempted any doubts by saying,
"Everything, from the bottle design to the name and the ideas for the
commercials -- that's me. When I commit to something, I do it 100
percent, and I've never had [creative control over a fragrance] until
this project. I learned a lot of great things from the past -- but I
always asked myself, 'If I could have my own scent, what would it be?'
I wasn't worried about deadlines. It could have taken me three, four,
however many years -- this was my first fragrance, and I wanted to make
sure that it was something I would love forever." [WWD]
After discovering several celebrity fragrances that attempted to answer this nosy-parker question in a similar way and with their own means, I can say that I am pretty sure Heat reflects Beyoncé's preferences....
Dolce & Gabbana wanted to create a new men's perfume which would smell different from what they currently offer while putting the accent on elegance and simplicity. The new cologne to be launched in September 2010 is called The One Gentleman and is fronted by actor Matthew McConaughey who was also the face for The One for Men (2008). The name has reportedly nothing to do with a class-bias but on the contrary wants to use an old word to stress adapted, inclusive modern values. Gabbana said,
"I think today's definition of a gentleman is someone who takes care of
himself and of the people around him. A father who looks after his
children is a gentleman," he said. "It's a much wider concept, not only
restricted to a man who lives in a villa with servants. I think a
surfer can be a gentleman, too."...
Actor Antonio Banderas has visibly decided to class up and sex up the Banderas portfolio for the launch of his 7th fragrance called The Secret. At the launch party which took place at Instituto Cervantes in New York City on May 12, 2010 the new men's cologne elicited rapt reviews regarding its packaging which is a step-up from his current offerings. Puig spokespersons pointed out that The Secret had been designed like a prestige fragrance while it will be distributed in the mass-market.
The launch party featured photography by Banderas which was auctioned for charity. This also gave an unique opportunity to play with the concept of peeping through a keyhole. One picture that was given pride of place was one illustrating the classic Hispanic theme of the matador but with the twist of showing a naked woman matador, save for the cape she holds very loosely (following pictures are maybe NSFW)...
After the launch of Queen in 2009, actress, singer and rapper Queen Latifah is going to follow up on her debut fragrance with an upcoming flanker this fall which will develop her Queen collection...
Avon released the commercial for the new Outspoken by Fergie, "Say it like you mean it!" Fergie also appears in a behind-the-scenes shoot where by the way she appears much sweeter than in the commercial, did you notice? Perfumer Laurent Le Guernec of IFF makes an appearance to explain the ideas behind the fragrance which I reviewed here...
Fragrance names, especially those of celebrities, are becoming more and more the topics of passionate discussions online. Rihanna asked her fans to help her out here. Jennifer Aniston wavered, forsook staid and settled for Lolavie, and then everyone went scratching their heads as to what that meant exactly, including your resident expert in wild guessing (I wasn't actually wrong as it turned out)...
As it surfaced earlier on in January, busy bee Paris Hilton was preparing to launch a new perfume, her 10th to date, this time inspired by one of her icons, Marilyn Monroe. We can now confirm that the new fragrance is called Tease and will launch this summer of 2010. Paris Hilton wanted a throwback to Old Hollywood glamor,
"TEASE is all about being
sexy like a true Hollywood Goddess. I found inspiration in the playful glamour
of one of my favorite screen icons in an 'off camera' moment," says Paris Hilton. "In this shoot, I am
all about being alluring but with a wink,
anda
fun, fresh take on all that is enticingly feminine about a woman today. I want
to give women permission when they wear this fragrance to tease their man with
all that flirting allows."...
More information is now available about the upcoming Beauty by Calvin Klein which we learned the other day is fronted by actress Diane Kruger. The concept of the fragrance is to suggest the idea of a woman who is beautiful from the inside out, with that indefinable aura about her.
To capture this into fragrance perfumer Sophie Labbé turned to the scent of Calla Lily calling the composition a "neo-lily"...
Lancôme have announced that actress Penelope Cruz is to be the next face of their modern classic, Trésor, launched in 1990, a fragrance that has helped shape women's fragrance sensibilities in the last two decades. She will replace actress Kate Winslet who joined Lancôme's stable of celebrities in the fall of 2007. Lancôme said,
"We're thrilled to announce
that Penélope Cruz has joined the Lancôme family as an ambassadress for the
legendary Trésor fragrance. Trésor, introduced in 1990, has been represented by
the world's most iconic women."...
After the launch in 2008 of her debut fragrance Fancy, followed in 2009 by Fancy Love, Jessica Simpson is now turning to a more mysterious and romantic feel with the new upcoming Fancy Nights. The perfume to launch this summer 2010 is said to be inspired by "scenes of a sparkling moonlight fantasy." Simpson said, "My newest fragrance Fancy Nights gives me the chance to express a more romantic side of my personality. It's sexy and has that captivating, glamorous sense of enchantment that every girl wants to feel."
The perfume was composed by nose Steve de Mercado of Fragrance Resources who also created Queen by Queen Latifah, Escada Magnetism, Paris Hilton Heiress, Love at First Glow by Jlo, Penhaligon's Endymion and Ellenisia...
Calvin Klein is turning once more to the charisma of beautiful celebrities after Kate Moss (Obsession), Scarlet Johansson (Eternity Moment) and Eva Mendes (Secret Obsession) to help them launch their next perfume to debut in the fall of 2010...
Last fall, a perfume cultural project was born inspired by a tragic love story set in Renaissance Italy, Perle di Bianca (Bianca's pearls). The fragrance aims to capture the personality and destiny of Bianca Cappello (1542-1587), a patrician Venitian woman reputed for her seductive beauty. According to the chronicles, she was poisoned with her husband Francesco I de Medici by her brother-in-law cardinal Ferdinando I de Medici...
Italian couturier Gianluca Bulega's new perfume is called Amada Mio. It is said to be inspired by the myth of Gilda and the typical elegant and refined atmosphere of the 1940s era. The scent follows the launch in 2009 of the brand's debut fragrance Amami Alfredo.
The new fragrance is not what you would expect initially from a perfume meant to embody the sultriness of Gilda. Or at least it betrays a more sophisticated and distanced approach as the family of perfumes to which Amada Mio belongs, the Fougères, reveals. Fougères have become nearly masculine exclusives, with few exceptions; SJP Covet was one of them in the recent period...
Outspoken is the new upcoming fragrance by Fergie done in collaboration with Avon. It will launch first online on May 17th, 2010 then via other channels on June 3.
The main olfactive idea I had retained of Outspoken is that it is based on a tuberose and leather accord, a potentially powerful pairing which holds the promise of a particularly true-to-reputation, deleterious tuberose perfume. This is a direction one is always interested in gauging where the scent of tuberose is concerned. Its mythical reputation as a high-octane nocturnal floral too dangerous to be smelled by damsels lest impure thoughts cross their minds is here to stay. But the reputation also always needs to be tested and the myth examined, perpetuated or found lacking somewhat. Tuberose is a polemical flower in and of itself - others would call it polarizing- and it's always tempting to test the limits of a myth, especially when it says it will be wearing a leather corset or jacket on an already ample bosom...
