Grammy award-winning Latina icon and singer Shakira has signed an agreement with Spain-based Puig Beauty & Fashion Group to develop a line of signature beauty, perfume and personal-care products. (via Cosmetic News)
Singer Erykah Badu is reported to have been elected by Tom Ford to be the face of an as-of-yet-unnamed upcoming fragrance of his. The Grammy Award winning singer is known for her outspoken political views and sense of fashion earlier in her career. She now has a charity organization called Beautiful Love.
This move reported by Vogue UK, seems to confirm that niche perfume brands are as interested as luxury brands in perking up their images with celebrities. It also shows how they tap into a pool of celebrities that correspond to their edgier images.
A Garden By The Beach & The American Dream
In the often decried world of celebrity fragrances, Jennifer Lopez has managed to be both a 21st century trend-setter and standard-bearer of good quality mass-marketed perfumes that aim to please without being condescending to the masses. Balance, prettiness, even beauty, and quality ingredients can be expected from her brand. Deseo continues to keep these values active. Deseo in terms of semiotics or image is a significant departure from the rest of the Jennifer Lopez franchise as its packaging is unique to the brand, seems to break loose with the amphora-inspired flacons, and the name, for the first time, pays homage to JLo's Hispanic heritage. The bottle was designed by JLo herself together with the Coty Prestige team. Deseo means "desire, wish, dream" or "I desire". From the name to the shape of the flacon, Deseo positions itself as an aspirational perfume. While it is more usual to see aspirational fragrances for the individual, Deseo is clearly an aspirational perfume designed for a whole community, the Hispanic one, with possible identification for the rest of the potential customers through representations of social mobility, general experience of immigration, or the luster associated with celebrity glamour....

Singer Hilary Duff is releasing her second signature fragrance called Wrapped With Love, which comes after With Love (2006), one of the decent-smelling celebrity fragrances one can find in the market. Reading the ad copy makes one think that Wrapped With Love might be a dumbed down version of With Love given the heavy stress put on very commercial tooth-achingly sweet notes. Honestly, the description alone could send a diabetic person into a coma, "Reminiscent of Hilary's favorite things, the fragrance offers up an absolutely irresistible white mousse chocolate note, wrapped in a combination of milk and vanilla beans.....

Milan-based Italian fashion designer Alberta Ferretti will launch her signature fragrance in the spring of 2009. A long-term exclusive world-wide licensing agreement was signed between fashion group Aeffe, founded by Alberta Ferretti and her brother Massimo in 1981, and cosmetics company Elizabeth Arden to that effect. The Alberta Ferretti fragrance will be followed by cosmetics and skincare products.....

Emporio Armani Diamonds is yet another example of one of the most popular feminine perfume note accords that were last year: the rose-amber-patchouli accord. You might have come across it in the major launches of Dior Midnight Poison, Gucci by Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent Elle, which capitalized on it. Of the scents found in the series alluded to above, Diamonds is the least sophisticated one as it aims a younger age group or at least, seems to. It is a rose perfume updated to meet contemporary mainstream taste; it took a detour to the candy factory and was made to adhere to a pink-coded girlish ethos despite the fact that the juice is colored white. If you smell it, you will see that in fact it is a pink juice. One can read in the copy from Sephora, This surprising and decadent fragrance is based on the traditional symbol of femininity, the rose, but is twisted with luscious, edible notes to create a truly desirable combination. We will not linger here on the celebrity context for the scent. You can find more details about Beyoncé Knowles fronting the ad campaign in our previous post......

The Beckhams moved to the United States before their new duo of fragrances, Intimately Beckham Night for Men and Intimately Beckham Night Women will cross the Atlantic. The perfumes were launched in September of 2007 in Asia and Europe and will be rolled out to the US market in 2008. Another "signature fragrance" by Victoria Beckham is said to be planned for the fall of 2008.
Since 2005 and the success of Instinct, the Beckham franchise has developed to include both the day-time and night-time versions of the couple's perfumes meant to embody their marital bliss and sexy image. The Intimately Beckham Night duo is the sexiest to date. The men's version was created by perfumer Jean-Pierre Bethouart of Firmenich, the women's by Andrea Lugo of Takasago........

Justin Timberlake, it is only rumored at this stage, could be the next celebrity to lend his appearance to the promotion of a Givenchy perfume after Liv Tyler for Very Irresistible. According to WWD (subscription only), "Justin Timberlake could be the face of the next Parfums Givenchy men's fragrance, according to rumblings in the market. Neither the pop star's manager, David Schiff, nor Parfums Givenchy executives in Paris could be reached for comment."
If you are an amateur of historical perfumes, you are bound to have happened on Prastara Royal, a perfume based on a recipe created by a chemist to Louis XIV, as the tradition recalls, and now faithfully re-created by Douglas Hopkins & Co at the Perfume Factory. We asked its founder Douglas Hopkins to tell us about the story of this fragrance and his own role in shaping anew the destiny of this ancient eau. It turns out this is not just an inspired marketing project, but more an adventure taking its main hero, Douglas Hopkins, from the milieu of the New York fashion industry to Royal Austrian castles and post-Communist fragrance factories in Eastern Europe. The material contained in this exclusive interview will be part of a forthcoming photography book, Real.Views. Marie-Hélène Wagner: The story of Prastara seems complex; I see that there is a Polish brand that sells a similar product. Do you have any information about that other Prastara?
Douglas Hopkins: The short story is that I bought the Prastara trademark from the Poles back around 1987, from a trip with a fragrance industry expert, looking for investments after the Wall went down. The Communist factory keeps the domestic Polish market, I have the rest of the world. I've since created three other scents, Prastara Blue, Åse (OH-say), and Zazou. I was friends with a number of European royal families, stemming from portraits I did during twenty years as a New York fashion photographer, and through their exquisite private castle libraries (You can yet see a photo of one on the first page of our old site www.DouglasHopkins.com). I found intriguing formulations, which I used in creating my scents. With my background as a volcanologist at MIT/NASA, I expanded into geothermal-based skin care products, which did exceptionally well. They were licensed a few years ago and are being redesigned for a new launch. We made an unintended splash in the fashion press for a $800 per ounce "Deep Sea" limited edition, therapeutic mud, which sold out at Bergdorf Goodman in a week. We have been more or less exclusive to Bergdorf's for 15 years, but are now expanding into a wider market. We have been a hit in Italy for a decade, and recently entered Galeries Lafayette in Paris, the first American niche fragrance in the store. These are a few of the highlights........
