After an initial report in 2008 about her upcoming fragrance and a teaser given to an Italian magazine last month, Mary J. Blige is telling it all to WWD this morning: how her fragrance came about, what it represents for her. Beyond the perfume notes, there is a history of violence (the regular sight of women fleeing naked out of their homes to escape the physical abuses of their husbands), a story of conquest of one's self-esteem, a struggle to affirm life over death (she contemplated suicide.) Although I am not familiar with Mary J. Blige's work and life, I had been able to perceive that people find her inspirational and now I understand better why. The singer is inspired to use the style of speech of an Evangelical priest while describing very correctly the capacity of perfume to embody a series of contrasts, even contradictions. Perfume really is or can be a mirror in the narcissistic sense but also in the sense of destiny-gazing and divination, anticipating the next developments, the next desires in one's life.
"it's a special tribute to us as women. My fans and I are smart now. We
know we're smart now, but we didn't know it then. We know we're
beautiful now, we didn't know it then. We're educated now, we didn't
know it then. We're soft, we're edgy -- we're all those things. And I
wanted this perfume to represent every female's everyday life."...
Italian luxury shoemaker SalvatoreFerragamo will have a global launch in September 2010 of a new women's perfume titled Attimo (Moment). Details about the composition are still kept under wraps although it was already introduced to a professional audience at Cosmoprof Bologna 2010.
It is not overly helpful to hear for example that the perfume is meant for a woman of timeless elegance, but this might indicate that the fragrance is not going to be too much oriented in the direction of a flirty, pink bonbon fragrance...
If the French admittedly love perfume (especially in Paris and the South of the country), they seem to be less inclined to partake of the pleasures of celebrity fragrancing as if those two terms didn't mesh well. It must be the emphasis of the art-for-art ethos and the normative influence of the cinéma d'art et d'essai versus the Hollywood sense of spectacle. I already wrote that while celebrity perfume in France might be less of a circus-ring phenomenon than in the US (no offense meant), it's been there for a while. But it looks like things are evolving. Cathy Guetta shook it at Sephora Champs-Elysées proposing disco-balls of fragrances. Christian Audigier who now lives in LA and has mastered the art of celebrity marketing asked Johnny to be present at a perfume introduction event at the same place. Johnny Halliday is a pop singer in France who is considered a national monument but he got fed up with the national tax system and went to live in Switzerland.
The new upcoming Le Tapis Rouge (The Red Carpet) by reality French TV celebrity Christophe Guillarmé seems to be also more American-style and is revelatory of a more democratic, grassroots approach to celebrity perfume...
Singer Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas band is preparing to launch her first fragrance by Avon and it's called Outspoken. "Strong and outrageously bold, Outspoken is for the
woman who needs no introduction; she is fearless, true to herself and
her beliefs." Fergie appears on the advert with a megaphone to drive the point home further. And the fruity-floral perfume itself features a floral note often beloved by powerful women: Tuberose. This season, ladies, tuberose absolute is really a hot trend. I don't know if this means that there are more high-powered women or if it's time to clamor and roar a bit after licking your recession wounds or such, but you read it here first loud and clear. By the way, Fergie is rumored to wear Amarige by Givenchy (from mini $5,95 & 1 fl. oz $25,83 scentedmonkey.com) a big tuberose-y floral, so it seems that this signature scent is important enough for her to keep a trace of it in Outspoken. I also found a quote from hubby Josh Duhamel saying he loves to smell Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Abricot (sample $3 luckyscent.com) on her...
Following the news of Jennifer Aniston's upcoming perfume was playing a game of semantics in the past few weeks. It's now been confirmed that the fragrance is called Lolavie (rather than Lola Vie.) But the guessing game is not quite over yet and probably will not be anytime soon as Aniston reveals that the meaning of this newly coined word is too complex to be divulged to the public,
"It's a long story and honestly it's too personal to tell," she said. "But it has special significance." ....
"I love floral fragrances, and wanted Violet Eyes to make women feel beautiful, sophisticated, and sensual. It was a great joy to create Violet Eyes with a bouquet of fragrance notes that I adore, carefully fine-tuning every aspect of it.Everything, down to the last detail, comes from my heart and my soul.I send this fragrance into the world with love..."
Elizabeth Taylor
Violet Eyes, the new perfume by Elizabeth Taylor created in collaboration with Elizabeth Arden opens on an absolutely lovely violet and vanilla accord with undertones of exotic fruits, and some amber and woods. The perfume makes me think most of the vanillic softness of Hervé Léger (a hidden gem) but I am sure that the delicious vanilla peach skin of Hanae Mori will also come to mind easily. On a more intellectual level and towards the very end of the drydown, I am reminded of the wonderful vanilla-and-vetiver accord of Habanita by Molinard.
After this velvety, soft overture, Violet Eyes becomes citrusier creating a delayed sparkling quality. Given the thematic of the fragrance - Elizabeth Taylor's legendary violet-colored eyes - you get some sort of allusive olfactory accord to her eyes sparkling in the spotlight, framed by a movie camera. It's a close-up to her scintillating eyes...
Actor Bruce Willis is about to launch his own signature perfume this summer from July 1st 2010. No name has been given yet but the fragrance company which has been in charge of developing the product is the one which did a quatuor of perfumes inspired by the series Desperate Housewives...
I have been wanting to smell Tony Sirico Paolo per Uomo which came out in 2008 (yes, I do have a long view of things) and meanwhile found this behind-the-scenes footage that looks like a DVD extra for The Sopranos series that could have been entitled "the French perfumer who almost messed up Tony's cologne but finally got it right." The creative team jokes around the Paulie character: "I'll say it's the French guy's fault." The nose behind Paolo per Uomo is Laurent le Guernec of IFF and it took him a rather quick 15 tries to get it right for Tony...
The new face of Rimmel makeup Georgina May Jagger, who harmoniously combines the looks of parents Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, maybe can't say that she wear any other lipstick than one put
out by the brand she is helping to promote, but she can speak more
freely about what perfume she likes to dab on (yes, she is a dabber)....
A rep for actress Jennifer Aniston corrected the information that was published by Life & Style Mag earlier on today saying the name of the actress' first perfume is Lola Vie, not "Lola V." As I guessed, however intuitively looking at the cryptic Lola V, it is indeed a play on words and means what I thought it might mean...
Sephora will launch a second perfume this May 2010 dedicated to the world of showbiz and to Josephine Baker in particular. After having announced Le Parfum Sex Pistols, here comes Le Parfum Josephine Baker. And guess who is behind this new venture by Sephora?...
Singer Celine Dion is adding yet another perfume to her portfolio of scent offerings with Pure Brilliance which will be introduced in September 2010. The name is meant to refer to a concept of inner and outer beauty.
"Pure Brilliance is about the radiance and beauty at the heart of every
woman," Dion stated. "It's the energy within that makes every woman
unique."...
Actress Jennifer Aniston has finally made up her mind as to what name to pick for her signature fragrance to launch this month in the UK. Her debut scent is called Lola V (see update at the end of the article)...
Since the fall of 2008, news started circulating that singer Mary J Blige was going to launch her own signature perfume in collaboration with Carol's Daughter...
The cinematic amethyst-colored eyes of actress Elizabeth Taylor are legendary. Elizabeth Arden have paid homage to their beauty and iconicity by releasing a new perfume in the star's portfolio called Violet Eyes. The tag line is "It begins with a look" and it indeed began with a look as stage mother Mrs. Taylor made sure her daughter wore the velvet cape in the shade that was needed to make her daughter's eyes stand out.
Liz Taylor fans will be interested to know that this is however not exactly the very first time that a fragrant homage is paid to her purple eyes. Not long ago in fact, last year, designers Bagdley and Mischka launched their perfume Couture which contains a note of violet in reference to those famous eyne, as the whole composition was conceived like a bouquet of olfactory references to their best female friend stars...
