L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent was released in 2006 and has become a bestseller. It is ranked as the 6th most sold men's fragrance in France. The jus benefited from ample advertising budgets as well as the contributions of actor Olivier Martinez as the celebrity face of the scent. The talent of architect Jean Nouvel was added to the mix for a limited-edition bottle shaped as a homage to the male member (officially it is a test tube on a base). The tapping into the nuts-bolts-and-screws imagery obviously was a hit in general, with a bottle design inspired by the Bauhaus aesthetics. The cologne also arrived in a context where the simple name "L'Homme" was still capable of sounding distinctive and ear-catching a year after Dior Homme breathed new life into the masculine world of fragrances thanks its overdosed floral iris accord imagined by perfumer Olivier Polge (the sleek design-conscious packaging by Hedi Slimane counted as well to define the identity of the Dior perfume). Since then, numerous men's colognes touting a spare manhood label have been added to the point of drowning that sense of being simply a man's fragrance and standing apart thanks to a lack of fussiness. Sensing this, Yves Saint Laurent just released a more narrative flanker cologne titled La Nuit de L'Homme as a sequel to L'Homme (our review of the new scent is up next)...

As announced previously, Lanvin is counting on the celebrity-recognition effect of world champion Rafael Nadal to promote their new men's scent called L'Homme Sport by Lanvin. It can be hard sometimes for consumers to orient themselves in the maze of L'Homme and Sport-tagged masculine fragrances so it is almost an obligatory step for companies to choose a unique differentiating element in their advertisements, at least....

As announced last year, actress Halle Berry has been working with Coty on developing her signature fragrance. Now the scent called Halle by Halle Berry is set to launch in the spring of 2009. Berry is no newbie to the world of scents. She readily confesses that she likes to blend her own oils, much like Sarah Jessica Parker, calling it " a wonderful form of self-expression." Unlike SJP though, she does not seem to have a favorite super-sexy combination but rather thoroughly enjoys the creative part of it. "For years I have created my own personal scents by mixing and layering fragrances, trying to come up with something unique and different. It's a wonderful form of self-expression and I am thrilled to be working with Coty on my debut fragrance," ...

Jennifer Lopez who single-handedly revived the celebrity fragrance market at the beginning of the 21st century, as it had been left somewhat fallow before her is continuing to expand her franchise. A new scent called Sunkissed Glow will be launched in February 2009 in Europe. It belongs to the unofficial Glow collection which started in 2003 with her debut perfume Glow by J. Lo. This was followed by Miami Glow, Love at First Glow, Glow After Dark. It comes more recently after Deseo and Deseo for Men. I personally own three of those in full sizes and can only say positive things about them, in particular I think that the drydown of Glow is simply superior, one of the very best on the market in terms of evolution and unobtrusive, pleasurable tenacity. Love at First Glow I had to buy after realizing how exquisite it smelled on a paper strip left abandoned (well not quite) on my night stand, several days after it had been sprayed on...

Alice (on the left) and Mathilda Temperley
British designer Alice Temperley confesses to having a weak spot for niche perfume house L'Artisan Parfumeur. She loves in particular to go to their store on rue du Bourg Tibourg (where the Mariage Frères tea room is also located) in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Her all-time favorite perfume is La Chasse Aux Papillons to which she returns always despite her infidelities, as she likes to change scents according to the season. Greta Garbo in 1934 © Time, Inc.
A year after the release of Hommage à Marlene Dietrich, Parfums Grès is preparing to launch a new trio of scents dedicated this time to Greta Garbo called Hommage à Greta Garbo which will launch in the spring of 2009. Like Marlene Dietrich, Garbo was one of the famous customers of couturière Madame Grès. The set comprises Mythos, Sphinx, Goddess in reference to the particular charisma that exuded from the star whom people could not wait to see laugh at long last in what must have been the most self-conscious laugh in history in Ninotchka (1939). And she did, beautifully so, and a bit strangely at the same time, "With her classic beauty, her noble aura and an occasional playful wink of the eye, she (Greta Garbo) fascinated both men and women. The fact that she loved being alone and hated the media frenzy enhanced her appeal to the public. In the course of her 19-year film career in which she made 27 films, she gave only 14 interviews. She was referred to as „the Goddess" or the „Swedish Sphinx". In contrast to other Hollywood stars she never gave an autograph, never attended the premieres of her films and never answered fan mail. In spite of this, she had a powerful effect on her times and the fashion of her day. The way she wore her make-up, styled her hair and dressed greatly influenced the trends of the Thirties." ...

From left to right, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill on November 24, 2008 at the 56th annual BMI annual awards in Nashville. All the folks here have had their names attached to a perfume (Kidman to Chanel No. 5), except Keith Urban: Keith, what are you waiting for? You obviously need to jump on the bandwagon! © RDiamondSinger and actress Faith Hill is to follow in the footsteps of husband Tim McGraw by launching in her turn a signature perfume in the fall of 2009. After having reportedly offered continuous input during the creation process of hubby's men's cologne named McGraw, the number 1 bestseller in men's mass-market stores currently, she progressively warmed up to the idea of launching a fragrance of her own. She said about her fragrance-developing philosophy for women, "A fragrance is part of what a woman wears, fashion that is 'visible'
to the sense of smell," she continued. "A scent should remind one of a
place, a time and a person...a pleasant memory. I am inspired by my
travels around the world as well as my home. These experiences have
made a mark on my style in what I wear, my surroundings (home decor)
and the perfume I choose."

Avon will launch a new celebrity fragrance for women in April 2009 called Spotlight (because nowadays everyone wants to be in the spotlight as Andy Warhol predicted, but without the "want-to" part which is very internet, very 21st century). Its spokesmodel is actress Courteney Cox. The scent, described as a fresh oriental, was created by perfumer Jean-Marc Chaillan of IFF and
"...is composed of top notes of shining silver, mandarin and Italian
bergamot; middle notes of white freesia, tuberose absolute, and mimosa,
and bottom notes of cashmere sandalwood, vetiver and white vanilla
musk. It will retail for $22.50 for 1.7 oz."...

Christina Aguilera is as it turns out a veteran perfume developer only press releases and articles usually are careful not to mention this somewhat attention-diverting fact. It might also not be the best of publicities to point out that a few other fragrances by her came before, that not too many people can actually remember. Her current official perfume website only mentions her two latest, Christina Aguilera and Inspire. Nevertheless, other names appear such as Xpose Passion, Xpose Desire, Christina Aguilera (by LR World). Inspire, according to the press release, and as can be expected for a celebrity fragrance is inspired by the looks and personality of Christina Aguilera, but also the pop art movement (Aguilera mentions Warhol) and Tokyo at night (because it is a favorite time and place of the singer's). It incorporates a central note of tuberose, one of her favorite aromas, and the packaging is red because it is her signature color...
