Jean Paul Gaultier to Launch Le Male Terrible to Bring out the Bad Boy in You (2010) {New Fragrance}

le-male-terrible-by-jean-paul-gaultier_56507_big.jpg
Jean Paul Gaultier is preparing to launch an extremely fresh version of Le Male called Le Male Terrible in "eau de toilette extrême" concentration. (Normally one should write "Le Mâle" in proper French but the brand prefers to simplify the orthography.)

Contrary to the icy olfactory theme, the ad copy oozes hot sexiness calling out to all bad boys, especially the closet ones. The new iteration was created by perfumer Aurélien Guichard...

Jennifer Aniston EDP (2010): Remake Made in Hollywood {Perfume Review & Musings} {Celebrity Fragrance}

jennifer-aniston-1B.JPG
jennifer-aniston-4.jpg
If you don't have the time to peruse a long review, there's a short, more practical Lifestyle-oriented version of it here.

Jennifer Aniston Eau de Parfum has been one of the most anticipated celebrity perfumes by the internet in part due to tabloid-worthy material regarding her personal life around the Brangelina axis of attention as well as her own, rapid fluctuations and speculations surrounding the name of her debut perfume and finally, the preview tagline coined by Aniston herself who gave the new fragrance as being "a nonperfume perfume." Mmmm, interesting.

As an observer of the perfume scene, one can only be struck in the case of this launch with the constant discrepancy appearing between discourse and actual juice as if Jennifer Aniston had had time to change her mind 50 times before finally settling on the opposite of what she claimed she would do. Thus the quirky, inscrutable "Lolavie" is replaced by the much more sedate and self-evident "Jennifer Aniston eau de parfum" and the "nonperfume perfume", it turns out, seems to be laughing somewhat at its own description. Even the official description of the fragrance is rather misleading, calling attention to the chasm existing between the copy writer's and the perfumer's languages. In the end though, Aniston apparently wholly embraces the result, saying '...it's turned out to be an extension of myself as opposed to slapping my name on something."

JF EDP could get our prize for most confusing, complicated and discrepant fragrance launch so far this year. Even Aniston's own descriptions of the perfume culled from a Women's Wear Daily interview at the time the perfume was announced as Lolavie are like hearing someone talk past the composition: "floral, but not too flowery," and "..most of all I wanted it to smell natural" and "I am not a big perfume-y fragrance fan" are not exactly what comes to mind when smelling the perfume -- well, perhaps the first descriptor is still defensible, but the second and third ones, hardly.

Notes: citrus grove accord, rose water / night blooming jasmine, wild violets, Amazon lily / sensual musk, golden amber, sandalwood....

Beyoncé Heat Ultimate Elixir (2010) {New Perfume} {Celebrity Fragrance}

beyonce-heat-ultimate-elixir.jpg
Singer Beyoncé Knowles will follow up on the success of her debut fragrance launch Heat (review here) with a new limited-edition flanker to be introduced in September 2010 called Heat Ultimate Elixir by Beyoncé. The concentration is dubbed a "parfum" one, the highest level of jus concentration in principle although since the term is uncertified it can lead to interpretative dosages and intensity-effects, especially as one can suspect, for a 1.7 fl. oz quantity...

Katy Perry Purr (2010): California Gurls Meet Catwoman {New Fragrance} (Celebrity Perfume}

Katy-Perry-B.jpg
Pop singer Katy Perry will launch her debut signature fragrance in November 2010. It is called Purr and is inspired by a sartorial accessory, a catwoman suit of hers, as well as clearly the oh-so-fun over-the-top candy-park theme of her song California Gurls which gives its title to her first single album to be introduced in August (video after the jump.) Perry, it turns out, is no novice when it comes to perfume, personally owning at least 50 bottles of fragrance. She also has precise ideas about what she likes promising that after Purr there will perfumes based on her favorites fruits. When you look at the video of California Gurls, you get a sense it's not just about candy and fruits but about a whole coherent aesthetics.

"I'm very inspired by the Japanese world and all things completely cute," she said. "All things edible for me are also intriguing. So if there are little dancing strawberries, I will be happy. Peppermint is cute; cotton candy is adorable. We like to keep it cute and classy,"...

Lolavie is Out, Jennifer Aniston is In: Name-Change Shocker, or Not {Fragrance News} {New Perfume} {Celebrity Scent}

jennifer-aniston-fragrance-B.jpgIn interesting - no, wait, make that earth-shattering fragrance-onomastics news, we learn through the press office of Harrods of London that the new perfume by Jennifer Aniston to launch tomorrow at the department store is not called Lolavie anymore but simply Jennifer Aniston.

If you care to remember, there had been prolonged media coverage of the name of the fragrance which started by being floated as maybe going to be "Aniston" then went on to be Lola Vie, then Lolavie (we're simplifying.) Was this all a big Jen joke on us? Fortunately, because suddenly I am feeling a bit like "did this really happen or did I just dream it?" there is still a visual of the fragrance on the blog with the name "Lovavie" emblazoned across it...

Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights (2010): American Gum-Popping Princess {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Fragrance} {Celebrity Scents}

JS-Fancy Nights-B.jpg

Fancy Nights by Jessica Simpson is the third fragrance by the pop star following Fancy (2008) and Fancy Love (2009.) This time around, we were forewarned that the perfume would be particularly sensual. While I cannot deny the work on a deepening of sensual accords, what strikes me even more than this velvetier atmosphere are rarer things such as a sense of humor and a certain spirit of anti-conformism. Labeled as a spicy floral oriental, Fancy Nights is one of those fragrances that are not just an inert addition of notes that will smell pretty like an image. It reveals a certain psychological depth and dynamism.

Right along the material perfume notes of citrusy bergamot, papyrus, patchouli, Bulgarian red rose, Night Blooming Jasmine, creamy vanilla, soft sandalwood, amber and oakmoss, you'd need to write: a good dose of humor, playfulness, a spirit of independence. I am almost tempted to use the word "wit" but it wouldn't fit completely as I do not sense that indispensable pinch of cynicism that you need to add to shake it and get wit.

This is not the perfume made by someone observing Jessica Simpson from a distance, Oscar-Wilde-like, pulling a well-rehearsed line written on a folded paper from his pocket - Wilde was a dreadful histrion and left nothing to chance - but rather a fresh pop art portrait of Jessica Simpson painted by perfumer Steve de Mercado, which additionally captures well a more general American pop-culture ambiance. This may sound odd, but to me, there is very much of an Independence-Day accord in this perfume...

Inis Fragrances of Ireland Caru (2010): Inspired by Summer & Fall {New Fragrance}

caru-inis.jpgIrish perfume house Inis, based in Wicklow dubbed "The Garden of Ireland", released a new fragrance inspired by the smells of the end of the summer and the onset of fall. It's called Caru taking its meaning from the word which signifies "love" in Old Gaelic.

"Inspired by the changing seasons; rich aromas of harvest and the last blooms of the Summer still scenting the breeze, CARU is warm and rich and yet just as the Autumnal air adds freshness there is a wonderfully crisp delicacy to CARU."...

Giorgio Armani 1001 Nights Oud Royal (2010) {New Perfume}

armani-oud-royal.jpg
The Observer unveils yet another one of the three new fragrances in the 1001 Nights collection under the Armani Privé label. It's called Oud Royal, if we needed any more confirmation that the new library is fashionably slanted in the direction of the Middle East's taste for agarwood or aloeswood. And please note that yet another oud scent is born...

Giorgio Armani Rose d'Arabie in a New 1001 Nights Collection (2010) {New Fragrance}

armani-prive-rose-arabie.jpg
Giorgio Armani will reportedly launch a new collection of fragrances called 1001 Nights under his Armani Privé label featuring three new compositions. Only one has been mentioned so far as being Rose d'Arabie, which seems to want to propose the Armani take on the classic rose-oud accord. Added: another 1001 Nights scent is called Oud Royal

Amouage with Lyric or Homage Attar, Bond No.9 with Bond No.9 Perfume, By Kilian with Rose Oud or Jo Malone with the just-out but already reviewed Cologne Intense Rose Water and Vanilla are a few of the ones who have previously and in the recent past offered adapted versions of this standard of Arabian perfumery.

The 1001 Nights moniker sounds also like an answer to the recent establishment of the By Kilian Arabian Nights collection (2009). This plethora of related releases show the shift in the mainstream Western markets towards the traditional Middle Eastern taste and historical legacy in order to meet the demands of emerging markets but also taking into account evolutions at home. The French will perhaps ban officially the wearing of the Burqa and Niqab in public spaces in France by the end of the year, but they will still welcome oud...
