Comme des Garçons are preparing to launch a new fragrance from June 24th 2010 in London called Wonderwood which seems to have benefited from a particularly lavish attention on the part of the label, what with a dedicated website incorporating a countdown feature like the best of the very commercial brands but especially a fabulous 3:16 mn stop-motion animated short by the Quay Brothers, Timothy and Stephen. Its only defect is that it doesn't last an hour, and more.
"The piece,
entitled WONDERWOOD, is about a man who loved trees more than words could say. An
allegorical representation of non verbal passion, the film expresses through
visual rapture the beautiful exorbitance of this new Comme des Garçons
fragrance."....

Paco Rabanne have unveiled their upcoming new feminine fragrance, the counterpart to best-selling 1 Million. It is called Lady Million and is fronted by model Dree Hemingway snapping her fingers like her male predecessor. One of the playful concepts for the ad is that Lady Million snaps back her fingers at Mr. Million, she being the only one capable of resisting his every whim. The ad campaign will unfold gradually; at one point Lady Million and 1 Million, who is played by Matt Gordon, will meet in the same commercial ready for a battle of the wills...

Fragrance expert Roja Dove has collaborated with the Victoria & Albert Museum to release a limited-edition perfume from September 2010 inspired by the personality and art of Serge Diaghilev, the impresario of the legendary Ballets Russes. The V & A will open an exhibition on this turning point in modern European cultural and artistic history in the beginning of the fall entitled Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes 1909-1929 (25 September 2010 - 9 January 2011).
'Diaghilev' has been created in homage to the evocative, exotic
fragrances associated with the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes.
Celebrated perfumer Roja Dove has created a contemporary interpretation
of the famous Chypré fragrances pioneered between 1909 and 1929,
capturing the passion, energy and inspiration of the impresario's
magical productions....

Avril Lavigne will roll out a new fragrance called Forbidden Rose in July and at the beginning of August 2010 following her debut scent Black Star. The tag line is " Dare to Discover" which is said to be a message for encouraging girls to push boundaries even further than with the first scent. Despite the fact that celebrity fragrances are often thought to be light affairs, and tween perfumes even more so, the singer pointed out that the process was arduous and took two years to complete. Of course, this doesn't prevent the upcoming Forbidden Rose to feel déjà vu, because sometimes, it's the whole point....

Chanel have let out further information about their upcoming masculine fragrance after releasing preliminary information in February 2010 which confirmed the participation of Martin Scorsese as the director for their new advertising campaign. A picture bathed in blue light from the film shoot and featuring Scorsese conversing with French actor Gaspard Ulliel was one of the official clues at that point, together with less official ones, courtesy of Dossier Journal. It's now been confirmed that the next men's fragrance by Chanel is called Blue, a name which is a throwback to one of three color-named fragrances that Coco Chanel released together as a trio in 1930 and called Le 1940 Beige, Le 1940 Bleu, Le 1940 Rouge...

Singer Kylie Minogue is going the way of bread-and-circus and that infamous line attributed to Marie-Antoinette " give them cake", with her latest fragrance to debut in July 2010 called Pink Sparkle. It is inspired by the luxury drink pink champagne yet will be more accessible than the champagne blend itself thanks to the illusory nature of perfume...

Marc Jacobs is preparing to launch a new men's fragrance called Bang from July 30th 2010. It's his first men's cologne since 2002 when the designer introduced Marc Jacobs for Men, a fig-centered composition. The added twist here, visually speaking, is that Marc Jacobs himself will lend his physical appearance to the advertising campaign for the scent, bringing the celebrity factor to bear on the destinies of the scent. He appeared wearing makeup last year in a nude picture for the 15th anniversary book for Nars (see below). This year, he will be lying on a silver Mylar bed holding a strategically placed giant bottle of Bang so as not to offend public morality. Tom Ford also thought that the best attention-catching spot to present a bottle of perfume to the public is the crotch and the cleavage. This has been called the Crotch Pose in advertising agencies since then (it's a just a guess.) Jacobs's business partner Robert Duffy is the originator of the advertising concept, 'Marc, you look so great now -- you should be the model for men's
fragrance.' My immediate reaction was, I don't know. But then I came to
see that it made sense. Men's fragrance, unlike women's in a certain
way, is very personal. It's a layer on top of skin -- for women, it can
be like changing a makeup color, but not for men...

English grooming label Molton Brown have released two new men's fragrances called Cool Buchu and Bracing Silverbirch which are both playing on the register of Icy. Cool Buchu, ex-Cool EDT (2007) (see pic on the right) according to the US website but not the UK one, is "Like jumping into an ice-cold pool on a blazing summer day - sparkling,
crisp, clean and energizing fragrance leaves bystanders feeling
parched. South African Buchu plant and Wild Watermint lead the way
while an undertow of Guatemalan Cardamom and Italian Tangerine lingers."...

After L'Eau de Serge Lutens and Bas de Soie, Serge Lutens will launch a third opus this year called Boxeuses (Boxers in the feminine) to be introduced in September 2010. Perhaps because the composition is even more complex than Bas de Soie and somewhat inexpressible, we are told of just one perfume note, the most important one, leather, and then something more enigmatic, skin, but Boxeuses seems to be better described by allusions...
