Kate Moss has launched a new perfume called Vintage Muse; the tagline is " Kate Moss is the ultimate muse," a reference to a line heard at the well-publicized event of the MET gala which took place last year entitled "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion" where Moss wore an Orientalist-cum-Grecian one-shouldered lamé dress with a turban to play the role of the muse. The Eau de Toilette is a flanker to Vintage (2009), which was an attempt to capture a certain retro atmosphere and reflect Moss's taste for nostalgia. Vintage Muse is, "Sophisticated and memorable, Vintage muse is a beautifully elegant yet sexy fragrance that reflects Kate's multi-faceted charm."...

Nina L'Elixir is the latest addition to the Nina portfolio which was inaugurated in 2006 to popular commercial acclaim with Nina Eau de Toilette. Perfumer Olivier Cresp working in tandem with Jacques Cavallier then, continued doing with it in a way what had been his signature, lucky pairing of sensual oriental notes with gourmand ones in Angel by Thierry Mugler, but also to a lesser degree in Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbanna with its crisp Granny Smith apple note, both major commercial successes. Other Nina flankers have been added yearly both sustained by and encouraging of the success of Nina which has reportedly sold more than 11 millions bottles worldwide. Nina L'Elixir is not just another slavish flanker but a real revisit of the composition by Olivier Cresp signing solo this time. One should not stop at the notes description nor official age-targeting for thinking about experiencing the perfume. The fragrance weaves complex aromatic codes which makes it a veritable mirror of the olfactory sensibilities of today. But most of all it is also a very good composition with a distinct, recognizable and easy-to-remember signature, a rare and coveted quality which can be said to be a holy grail of perfumery achievement...

The weather has been rather ambiguous this year in Paris, alternating between regular spring and summer and odd bouts of atypical, quirky weather. As we progress into August, again the temperatures seem to hesitate between muggy and hot and cool and autumnal. In the mornings, you can feel an anticipatory atmosphere of crisp fall air with in the background promises of burning fall leaves and mounds of apples. In the afternoons, it still can be sultry inviting you to wear a big moaning tropical floral while you get a chance...

The next big fragrance launch by Chanel this fall 2010 is that of masculine scent, Bleu de Chanel, which came early on to the attention of the internet with the fortuitous and up-to-the-minute revelation that director Martin Scorsese would direct the new commercial for it in the pure tradition of the major productions that Chanel put out for their perfumes. Expect to see the movie via official channels at the end of August. Being an icon of luxury and the name behind an enduring top global bestseller since 1921, the No.5, creates a sense of obligation: noblesse oblige. Bleu, which means blue in French, is meant to embody an idea of freedom represented by the olfactory note of a deep blue sea, a theme also reflected in the color of the flacon. While it may appear that the idea of sailing away to express liberty is not new, one can note that it authentically is a movement of getting back in touch with Chanel's biography. It furthermore enables to fortify a myth which goes back to the foundational experience of couturière Gabrielle Chanel before she became famous as we know that the seaside was seminal in her outlook on life, fashion, and in giving impetus to her career, in particular through her connections with the elegant Deauville set, the Normandy resort in which she opened her second boutique. The fact that Coco Chanel's universe is once more tapped into to inspire the creation of a masculine cologne serves only as a testament to the strength of her life itinerary while underlining her own free attitude towards gender conventions and style. Here, the terms "an unscripted life..." can be seen as an homage paid to the founder of the brand. " The man who refuses to be bound by convention resists the ordinary every day in favor of freedom, and finds satisfaction in the unexpected. His fragrance liberates the senses -- fresh, clean, profoundly sensual -- a signature statement of his determination to live an unscripted life."...

After a short interruption of our program, here is Take 2: The Lifestyle Fragrance Review for the new Acqua di Gioia, the practical-minded sister to the Long Review. In this section, we answer questions the fragrance raises about wearability, taste, appropriateness for social occasions and everything else more practical. You can always ask for more details. Notes: crushed mint leaves, Calabrian Limone Primo Fiore Femminello /
pink pepper, aquatic jasmine and dewy peony / cedarwood heart, brown
sugar and labdanum.Acqua di Gioia means "Water of Joy" in Italian and is intended as a pun upon the first three letters of designer Giorgio Armani's name as well as to recall its masculine counterpart, one of the top fragrance bestsellers for men, Acqua di Gio. When pronouncing or wearing the fragrance you will know that brands often like to use letters from their names so as to strengthen their brand image phonologically. A famous example is Dior <---> J'Adore. The bottle is better-looking in person than on the picture and I particularly liked the 1 fl. oz / 30 ml size which looks flatter and therefore even sleeker. It feels a bit like a worry stone and is practical for carrying in your purse...

For a shorter, lifestyle fragrance review of Acqua di Gioia, please see here. Armani's latest launch is Acqua di Gioia, the soul sister to Acqua di Gio a perennial masculine bestseller. Offering a less neutral image, it may come across as a limited-edition marine for summer while in fact the rain-forest and sea backdrop are arguably more like the creation of the conditions of mental escapism to be experienced at leisure. What struck me the most about this work is its sophisticated fragrance structure and its ability to please the senses each time in a varied fashion, something that has less to do with natural raw materials as is traditional than with precisely the structure of the scent. Notes: crushed mint leaves, Calabrian Limone Primo Fiore Femminello / pink pepper, aquatic jasmine and dewy peony / cedarwood heart, brown sugar and labdanum. Marine, aquatic fragrances can suffer a priori from the perception that they have issues with paleness, lack of substance and the suspicion that like milk during WWII during the occupation of Paris, they were watered down. Unless their very temperament is exaggerated and idealized so as to become pure style, they will always appear to feel a bit famished and vanquished next to their richer sisters. In a certain sense, introducing the idea of water into the palette of sensations covered by perfume is going against the ages-old ideal representation of a fragrance as a special quintessential distillation meant to intoxicate the senses thanks to its sheer complexity and opulence. Water is traditionally the refuse and by-product part of an essence-extraction process, you turn it into a floral water, not perfume actually. Fy! The relationship of wine to fine perfume therefore reveals probably materially more affinities than that of water to perfume (see Kyphi), unless we are talking about archaic symbolism translated into fragrance motifs and effects, something I could experience when reviewing L'Eau by Serge Lutens. Although I am not averse to watery perfumes, I can feel less urgency when spotting a new fragrance which is clearly going to replay the water-fall theme in any obvious manner. The fact that the print advertising for Acqua di Gioia is like a feminine version of Homme by Guerlain (same color palette, same jungle thematic) did little to make me feel this could be a distinctive launch. The TV advertising is more atmospheric and soigné and better conveys the desire of the fragrance to be lasting and timeless. There was also a bus-shelter ad campaign in France...

Yardley of London released in the beginning of 2010 a new flanker to their classic You're the Fire (1973) called You're the Fire Summer Nights. It appears to be exclusive to the South African market where the original You're the Fire is still commonly sold while it is a vintage rarity in the USA (talk about some time warp.) "The House of Yardley is proud to introduce an upgraded version of the
old favourite; Yardley You're the Fire. Introducing Yardley You're the
Fire Summer Nights; this new romantic fragrance by Yardley will help
you escape the realities of life to some far off exotic destination."...
