Lanvin Jeanne Lanvin (2008) {New Fragrance}

lanvin_jeanne.jpg

Lanvin is introducing a new feminine perfume which taps into the historic heritage of the house. It is named Jeanne Lanvin after the founder of the couture brand; the flacon is decorated with the mother-and-daughter logo by Paul Iribe from the 1920s. But in a clear move to adapt to new mores and a new generation of consumers, the fragrance has been colored pink and made to smell "young" as an up-to-date fruity-floral. Perfumer Anne Flipo, who created the scent together with artistic director Alber Elbaz, said,

“I was aiming for something simple yet sophisticated—impertinent and young—mirroring the modern woman Jeanne Lanvin was,” ......

Estée Lauder Sensuous (2008): A Buttery Fusion of Woods & Amber {Perfume Review} {New Fragrance}

Sensuous-EDP-Small.jpg

Sensuous is the latest major feminine launch by Estée Lauder following Tuberose Gardenia Private Collection introduced last year in the summer. If there is an American beauty brand that has consistently aimed to make as many women as possible feel more beautiful through access to fragrance allure and luxury, that would be Estée Lauder. Although it is sometimes stated that Lauder wanted to capture the attention of the upper-classes with her luxuriously feeling scents, their price points indicate otherwise targeting rather the woman who believes she has it in her to live a better life. Private Collection (1973) may have been initially a private gift to Princess Grace of Monaco, but taxi cab drivers loved it just as much and it finally made it to the department store counters.

Mrs. Estée Lauder was obviously particularly sensitive to beauty. The models that have graced the advertising pictures of the brand have become the stuff of legend thanks to their gorgeous classical looks.There were Karen Graham, Shaun Casey, Willow Bay, Carolyn Murphy (see Estée Lauder advertisements for more familiar faces). Paulina Porizkova was noted for being a discreet turning point - a sign of the times - a beauty that was slightly less Greek. Liz Hurley further made the Estée Lauder woman archetype feel more accessible.

These standards became an iconic reference and even made it into the popular culture. Thus best-selling author Dan Brown tickles the desires of his masculine readership by talking about the main feminine character in his thriller Digital Fortress as looking like an Estée Lauder model, in order to stress her exquisiteness knowing his readers will catch on to that mainstream gold standard of beauty: "Her delicate European features and soft brown eyes reminded him of an ad for Estée Lauder" (p. 16)......

The bottle: the back of the Sensuous bottle is ribbed, adding a sensual tactile element to the experience of the perfume. It is unusual and very pleasant to the touch, almost acting like a worry-perfume-bottle. The jus is a pink-champagne color. Photo © The Scented Salamander.

Diesel Fuel for Life Cologne in the Summer of Colognes (2008) {New Perfume}

diesel_cologne_feminine.jpg
As noted previously in the review of the new Dior Escale à Portofino, the summer of 2008 sees a slew of cologne creations from various brands. The conjunction seems a bit mysterious and almost astrological, but it is in tune with a general vogue for fresh perfumes. When you put the word "cologne" in the sense of the ancient eau, on a label one must admit that it immediately puts a stamp of classicism on the hippest and most youthful of perfumes, case in point: Diesel Fuel for Life Cologne....

Nasomatto China White or the Heroin Chic Style (2008) {New Fragrance}

China-White-Nasomatto.jpg

Independent perfumer and owner of niche brand Nasomatto, Alessandro Gualtieri, has come up with a new scent called China White in reference to a type of heroin that was popular in the 1980s. There is also a Chinese crackled ceramic reference as the cap is made of white ceramic.

Gualtieri is also contributing this season to a new exclusively distributed set of perfumes by Morgane Le Fay.....

Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame (2008): More Deets {New Perfume}

Ma-Dame-Ad2.jpg

WWD is also announcing today the new perfume by Jean Paul Gaultier and we get further details about why it's called "Ma Dame" and not "Madame". Says, the fashion designer himself,

"The name Ma Dame is like a little French joke," he explained. "A 'madame' can be a woman of a bordello, and 'madame' can also mean someone bourgeois. Even in terms of dressing, 'to dress like a madame' in French is boring, super politically correct. But 'ma' 'dame' in two words means 'my dame.' It means she's not like the woman in the bordello or bourgeois. She's his muse."

We also learn that Ma Dame's pragmatic mission is to make a dent in the fresh-fragrance market....

Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame (2008) {New Perfume}

JPG-Ma-Dame-Ad.jpg

Jean Paul Gaultier is going to launch a new feminine fragrance in September called Ma Dame.

If the name sounds medievalish and seems to hint at courtly love complete with luth-stroking troubadours, hip model Agyness Deyn, posing with Jean Paul Gaultier, makes sure the image of the perfume remains edgy and oriented toward youth culture. Deyn also recently lended her appearance to the ad for Burberry Beat.....

Zara Rosa Bulgara with Notes on Flor de Azahar, Lirio de Agua (2008) {Perfume Review} {New Fragrances} {Rose Notebook}

Zara-Rosa-Bulgara.jpg

Zara is a Spanish fashion brand, famous for having made high fashion styles accessible to the demos. It was founded by Amancio Ortega Gaona, a notoriously reclusive personality, a fact that did not prevent him from becoming the richest man in Spain. Zara, in particular, is known for its exceptional turnover rate as new designs are brought into the stores in a matter of days and sold out or replaced equally swiftly, as need arises. The Zara boutiques usually receive new clothes twice a week. According to the Independent (May 23, 2001),

"Zara has never conducted an advertising campaign. Word of mouth, and the rapidly changing clothes on offer, seem magnetic enough for customers to come flocking through the doors. The company owes its success to swiftly identifying stylish catwalk trends and bringing them to the high street at a fraction of the cost, within days."

Zara partnered with Puig in the past to introduce several fragrances starting with Zara Woman, Zara Man and four limited edition scents called Zara Textures in 1999. The fragrance line was originally set up by Carlos Benaïm and Alberto Morillas. The perfumes were created by Rosendo Mateu. In 2003 I Homme was launched. The brand this year released 6 new fragrances in the beginning of 2008, three for women and three for men: Rosa Bulgara, Flor de Azahar, Lirio de Agua, Sandalo, Vetiver, and Ambar, which are all part of a new line of perfumes called Agua Perfumada. The Perfumed Water line is also made by Puig.

The spirit of the range is described as being "classical, minimalist, and elegant", according to Look 4 Fashion. Perhaps in keeping with the company's motto of proposing affordable versions of high-end patterns and materials, it is not surprising to notice that the packaging for the new perfumes resemble in shape and size the line of Les Exclusifs by Chanel......
