German fashion designer Steffen Schraut launched a new, eponymous fragrance for women called Steffen Schraut Eau de Parfum. It was developed by the M M Fragrance group based in Düsseldorf and in particular by nose Frank Rittler. You can read an interview of his here. The perfume boasts a rich floral composition incorporating "about 120 natural essences".......

The Body Shop introduced this fall a novel masculine version of its bestseller White Musk initially launched more than a quarter of a century ago in 1981. It is called White Musk for Men. The composition is signed by perfumer Evelyne Boulanger who also did L'Artisan Patchouli Patch, Zagorsk, Jaisalmer in the Comme des Garçons Incense Series as well as Carnation in the Red Series, amongst others. The fragrance was designed to smell more virile thanks to the addition of pronounced dry woody notes conjuring up the evocation of fast and hard driving in a scorched desert atmosphere.....

If the dog-friendly perfume creation trend continues to develop we will need to inaugurate a dog-perfume section on this blog; the latest brand to enter the arena of caninophile fragrances is Mungo & Maud , London-based self-described "dog and cat outfitters", with a scent called Petite Amande (Little Almond), which is meant to be worn by both dogs and human beings. It was created by perfumer Lyn Harris of Miller Harris......

We previously reported on the new collection by Grès which features a trio of perfumes dedicated to the memory of Marlene Dietrich. They illustrate yet another sub-category of celebs fragrances (see also WAGs' fragrances), the posthumous celebrity fragrances, also an angle explored by the new Dior Passage collection which combines homages to living and dead celebrities. If we were wondering whether perfume has become completely separated from its religious roots, the answer would be a resounding "no". Just like incense used to be burned to deities and unfurl in the sky to communicate with the divine in ancient times, perfume flacons are now more than ever being filled with juices that waft more or less subtly towards a pantheon of celebrities who have passed away.......

The perfumes issued by Jovoy the newly re-established house founded by Blanche Arvoy in 1923 and now revived by François Henin, Henri de Pierrefeu, and Marie-Laure de Rodellec (see also post on the "patrimony movement" in French perfumery) pose the interesting question, to us, of the significance of the name and concept behind a perfume in their influence over the composition of the fragrance and the communication of its personality to the wearer. If a perfume is art, then it is about the attempt to establish a bridge of communication between two imaginations, two universes, those of the creator(s) and the wearer(s). Perfumes named with non-particular names, but rather with names denoting the whole group or family of perfumes might well be in danger of blunting precise images, precise sensations. It is very difficult to assess how much a name influences our perception of a perfume without doing psychological tests about olfactory creation and perception and expectations. Perfumes might very well be inevitably linked to stories and names as the other halves of themselves, which includes the shape of the bottle, another story told with different materials........

Lubin has introduced two new fragrances this fall called L'Eau Neuve, a unisex perfume, and Le Vétiver, for men. L'Eau Neuve was initially created in 1968 and is actually a re-issue from their historic catalog. L'Eau Neuve is described as a crisp, fresh fragrance, and very French-smelling. It has notes of Lemon Orange, Lavandin, Bergamot, Thyme Camomile, Jasmine Flower, Rose Petals, Clary Sage, Coriander, Marjoram, Patchouli, White Musk, Eastern Red Cedar, Mysore Sandalwood, Oakmoss Resin........

Givenchy has released a new pure parfum version, the highest concentration available, of Ange ou Démon launched last year. The base has reportedly been enhanced with more patchouli while the composition has been made more intense. It is available at Nordstrom, 0.5 oz for $150.

MaxMara is announcing their "biggest launch ever" with a creation simply titled Le Parfum. It is bound to interest musk fragrances aficionados in particular as it is described as being composed of 60% of musks, using five different types of these. It is also slightly transgressive gender-wise as it takes a traditional masculine note, nutmeg, and offers a feminine rendition of it. The brand explains that "MaxMara was made famous by using top stitching, traditionally used for men’s tailoring, and putting it on garments for women"......

Esteban this fall has decided to bring its contribution to the universe of chypres by issuing two new compositions, Classic Chypre and Modern Chypre. The chypre family of fragrances has been notably revived in the past year with more fantasy brought to now so-called modern types of chypres, which will not hesitate for example to include a gourmand accord like in Liberté by Cacharel or any other notes not traditionally found in chypres, yet respecting the contrasted luminous and earthy chypre structure all the while. One can see this as a paradoxical movement as a traditional ingredient used in chypres, oakmoss, is no longer in use due to an EU regulation......

Histoires de Parfums, a niche perfume house established in 2001 in the heart of the Marais by founder and owner Gérard Ghislain has issued a new fragrance called Ambre 114. The house has also repackaged and re-conceptualized their once upon a time differentiated collections by making the perfume bottles look as if they were books taken out from the personal library of a choosy connoisseur.......

Perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jean-Pierre Béthouart have united their efforts to create five new Eaux de Toilette in a collection called Pluie d'Arômes by spa brand Cinq Mondes. It is an extension of a pre-existing line of candles and shower oils. Olivia Giacobetti had previously already created and Eau Egyptienne for Cinq Mondes.
Each scent is associated with a color and a psychological state of mind, a little bit in the vein of the Kenzo palette of perfumes issued this fall that associates color and scent although this time color is not so much conceptualized as a direct source of creative inspiration for the perfumers, as aiming to have the perfume wearer "click" with the color and capture a different type of energizing message each time........
