After L'Eau de Serge Lutens and Bas de Soie, Serge Lutens will launch a third opus this year called Boxeuses (Boxers in the feminine) to be introduced in September 2010. Perhaps because the composition is even more complex than Bas de Soie and somewhat inexpressible, we are told of just one perfume note, the most important one, leather, and then something more enigmatic, skin, but Boxeuses seems to be better described by allusions...

Les Parfums de Rosine, which specialize in rose fragrances, have launched their third masculine rose scent to date following Rose d'Homme (2005) and Twill Rose (2006), the latter a fragrance which women love to wear as well. The new composition is called Rosissimo and is inspired by a rose offering nuances of lemon and grapefruit...

Serge Lutens will launch a new perfume from June 2010 called Bas de Soie (Silk Stockings). This fragrance visibly continues to develop his series of reflections on a sartorial theme after Serge Noire (2008) and Fourreau Noir (2009). As is evident, a contrasted white-and-black thematic gets further explored here hinting at both an existential and metaphysical mood. As we can expect from the artistry of the brand, this goes further than just perfume as fashion. The composition is said to be a pairing of hyacinth and iris and little besides that is given away except to offer more information about the inspiration for the fragrance...

Anthropologie have issued a debut collection of 6 fragrances called A Rather Novel Collection which is the Volume 1 in an ongoing series. Volume 1 is dedicated to teas from 6 different locations around the world while each perfume is considered as a " mini novel/travelogue in itself," The compositions are signed by 5 perfumers from Givaudan company: Stephen Nilsen, Adriana Medina, Marypierre, Caroline Sabas and Claude Dir. What is novel still, even if Frédéric Malle have accustomed the public to reading the names of perfumers on bottles, is the fact that the will to showcase perfumers has been adopted by Anthropologie, an US and now international chain store...

The oldest pharmacy in the world is in Florence. Santa Maria Novella which began its remedial activities led by friars in the 13th century and later went on to create perfumes has started to signal the opening of the festivities of the 400th anniversary of its official establishment with the launch of two perfumes called 1612 Porcellana and 1612 Ottone...

Italian makeup and perfume brand Pupa have introduced a new fragrance for women called In Case of Love to help you seduce your and his senses. In line with their trademark inventive packagings, the Eau de toilette comes in a "Real Seduction Kit" which includes a heart-shaped dusting powder puff and a lace-y "sleeping" mask (I don't think you're supposed to sleep with it, just saying)...

Dolce & Gabbana wanted to create a new men's perfume which would smell different from what they currently offer while putting the accent on elegance and simplicity. The new cologne to be launched in September 2010 is called The One Gentleman and is fronted by actor Matthew McConaughey who was also the face for The One for Men (2008). The name has reportedly nothing to do with a class-bias but on the contrary wants to use an old word to stress adapted, inclusive modern values. Gabbana said, "I think today's definition of a gentleman is someone who takes care of
himself and of the people around him. A father who looks after his
children is a gentleman," he said. "It's a much wider concept, not only
restricted to a man who lives in a villa with servants. I think a
surfer can be a gentleman, too."...

The Tommy by Tommy Hilfiger franchise sees two new limited-time summer additions inspired by " the freedom of the sea" this year. Tommy and Tommy Girl Summer 2010 were launched in February. Actor Antonio Banderas has visibly decided to class up and sex up the Banderas portfolio for the launch of his 7th fragrance called The Secret. At the launch party which took place at Instituto Cervantes in New York City on May 12, 2010 the new men's cologne elicited rapt reviews regarding its packaging which is a step-up from his current offerings. Puig spokespersons pointed out that The Secret had been designed like a prestige fragrance while it will be distributed in the mass-market. The launch party featured photography by Banderas which was auctioned for charity. This also gave an unique opportunity to play with the concept of peeping through a keyhole. One picture that was given pride of place was one illustrating the classic Hispanic theme of the matador but with the twist of showing a naked woman matador, save for the cape she holds very loosely (following pictures are maybe NSFW)...

Overview of Niche Perfumery Diptyque & Personal Reminiscences Vetyverio is the latest opus by Diptyque one of the earliest so-called "niche" perfume houses to have been established in the 1960s in Paris with this original phenomenological meaning of offering confidential and unusual perfumes which are not known by the wider public but whose existence becomes impossible to ignore among connoisseurs. It so happens, maybe not coincidentally due to this historical precedence, that the Diptyque boutique tucked away on a quiet stretch of the Boulevard Saint-Germain not far off Place Maubert came to represent my first-time entry-point to this universe of half-hidden scents whose existence you learn of by word of mouth. L'Autre (1973) was my first Diptyque love and purchase, smelt initially on a friend of the family. Diptyque was founded in 1961 but first sold textiles and wallpaper, then home decoration before
turning to scented candles in 1963 and launching their debut fragrance in
1968, L'Eau. Many Diptyques of the early days are signed by perfumer Serge Kalouguine who also worked later for the Laura Tonatto perfume house and is attached to Fragonard in Grasse....

With the phenomenal success of the Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer, vampires who had never really left our imaginations via books, films and TV-shows, have made a comeback en force. A Twilight Beauty brand was created to reflect this interest. National chain store Bath and Body Works managed to insert the word "twilight" in one of their perfumes Twilight Woods which was it seems vaguely inspired by the freshened up vampire mania. In 2009, the first ever vamp-pop convention was born, Vampire-Con. But perhaps most revelatory of all is the fact that the two most popular baby names in America are Jacob and Isabella with Cullen having jumped nearly 300 spots since 2008, according to the NYT, although Jacob has been a favorite for 11 years. Vampire by Body Fantasies is directly inspired by this new craze and is due out online initially on May 19th, 2010. The launch is associated with an advertising campaign encouraging you to " confess your darkest secret"...

In 2007, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bond No.9 collaborated for the first time to produce a duo of fragrances for her and him. While the men's version was business-like, classic and clubby, the women's version dared to be more eccentric, luscious and intense taking the gardenia flower as its emblem; I am more and more convinced that there exists a long love story between fine perfumery and gardenia and conceptions of femininity in American culture. It seems that when in doubt, you cannot go wrong with a dose of archetypal sultriness from the south. This spring, the collaboration was renewed to launch a second feminine fragrance called Saks-en-Rose billed as " a departure from your grandmother's rose." They were not kidding. Initially when I started smelling the new perfume I had to wonder if this was not simply a closeted flanker as it seemed that the gardenia note of the debut fragrance was quite present. Was the idea here to create a rose twist on the original gardenia scent? It proved out to be rather a scent signaling the presence of the lactonic tuberose note in the heart of the fragrance...

Fragrance names, especially those of celebrities, are becoming more and more the topics of passionate discussions online. Rihanna asked her fans to help her out here. Jennifer Aniston wavered, forsook staid and settled for Lolavie, and then everyone went scratching their heads as to what that meant exactly, including your resident expert in wild guessing (I wasn't actually wrong as it turned out)...
